PhD timeline planner

Your earliest and latest submission dates under UGC 2022, with a milestone plan you can add to your calendar.

Free, no sign-up. Nothing you type is stored. Last checked

Enter your date of PhD admission and this tool gives your earliest and latest thesis submission dates under the UGC 2022 PhD regulations, with a milestone plan you can download to Google Calendar or Outlook. For a full-time or part-time scholar admitted on 15 July 2024, the earliest date is 15 July 2027 and the six-year limit falls on 15 July 2030.

The legal dates come straight from the regulation. The milestones in between are our suggestions, and the plan marks them that way.

How this tool works

Clause 4 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022 sets the limits. The programme lasts a minimum of three years, including coursework, and a maximum of six years from the date of admission. The university may give up to two more years through re-registration, as long as the total stays within eight years. Women scholars and persons with more than 40% disability may be allowed a further two years, up to ten years in all.

So four of the dates in your plan are set by the regulation: the earliest submission date, the six-year limit (eight years with the relaxation), and the latest date if re-registration is allowed. Everything else is a planning suggestion based on how PhDs usually run: coursework finished in the first year, a progress review every six months, a target submission date, and the pre-submission seminar about three months before it.

UGC applies the same limits to full-time and part-time scholars. The suggested target is different because part-time scholars usually have less time each week: we suggest four and a half years for full-time and five and a half for part-time, which leaves a buffer before the limit either way. The PhD timeline guide explains each stage.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit before three years?

No. The UGC 2022 regulations set a minimum of three years from admission, including coursework. Some universities allow early submission only in exceptional cases, if at all, so ask your research cell before planning for it.

What happens after six years?

Your registration lapses unless the university re-registers you. UGC allows up to two more years through re-registration, under the university’s own rules, usually with a fee and a progress report. Apply well before the six-year date, because the process can take months.

Is part-time PhD longer?

Not under UGC rules. The minimum and maximum are the same for both modes. Many universities do expect part-time scholars to take longer in practice, which is why the suggested target here is a year later for part-time.

Does maternity leave extend my deadline?

The regulation allows up to 240 days of maternity or child-care leave during the programme, but it doesn’t say the leave extends the maximum period. Women scholars can also be allowed the two-year relaxation. Get your university’s position in writing before you rely on either.

Which date counts: admission or registration?

The regulation counts from the date of admission to the PhD programme. Some universities record a separate registration date after coursework, so check which date appears on your letters and which one your ordinance uses. If in doubt, plan from the earlier date.
