Which master’s degrees and marks does Anna University accept for a PhD?

You need 55% in your master’s, or a CGPA of 5.5 on the 10-point scale. For SC, ST and candidates with more than 40% disability, it is 50% or 5.0. The degree also has to match a faculty. Clause 2 of the Ph.D. Regulations 2025 is specific about which degree goes where:

The July 2026 admission guidelines add three filters that catch people out:

• Order of study. Your qualifications must run 10th, HSC or diploma, UG, then PG.
• Mode of the engineering master’s. An M.E. or M.Tech. earned through distance, weekend or work-integrated study is not accepted.
• School teachers are not eligible. That line was added in July 2026, and the January 2026 guidelines did not carry it.

Final-semester PG students may apply. But your result stays “withheld” until the final mark sheet arrives. The same happens while a course-equivalence approval is pending. When do you need one? CFR’s admission FAQ asks for it unless your master’s is an Anna University degree or a full-time regular degree from a State or Central university, IIT, NIT, IISc, IISER or IIM. A three-year part-time master’s from a State or Central university is also exempt.

Note too that the PhD is awarded in the faculty of your master’s degree, not your supervisor’s department. The FAQ gives an example. An M.Tech. in nanoscience gets a PhD in Technology wherever the work is done.

Should you apply full-time, part-time internal or part-time external?

Your employer decides the category more than you do. Under clause 3 of the regulations:

• Full-time means working in a recognised department in working hours and signing the attendance register daily. Project staff on a government-funded project of at least two years register under its principal investigator. An employee must be sponsored and formally relieved. AICTE QIP teachers and national fellowship holders are full-time only.
• Part-time internal covers staff of the university departments and constituent colleges, and regular teachers of government and aided engineering and polytechnic colleges.
• Part-time external is for everyone else employed in Tamil Nadu who qualifies. That means teachers in self-financing colleges, deemed universities and central institutes, and staff of industries, R&D units and laboratories. Teachers from other states are accepted only under a supervisor based in a university department, a constituent college, or a government or aided college.

You can change category only once, after your registration is confirmed. CFR’s scholar FAQ lists a ₹5,000 fee for it. So pick the category you can keep up for the minimum period.

How do you get an Anna University supervisor to approve your application?

You choose the supervisor yourself. CFR’s FAQ calls the choice “the sole discretion of the supervisor”, and the university suggests no one. First you register and pay the non-refundable fee. It is ₹1,000 plus GST, or ₹600 plus GST for Tamil Nadu SC and ST candidates. Your form then waits in the supervisor’s login until they approve it. Only then can you add your academic, employment and publication details. Before you ask anyone, check four things:

1. The department is recognised. If your supervisor’s college department lacks recognition, they can serve only as a joint supervisor. Scientists in state or national laboratories in Tamil Nadu may supervise, but clause 7.5 pairs them with a joint supervisor drawn from the university’s own departments or constituent colleges.
2. There is room. Clause 9.1 caps a Professor at 8 scholars, an Associate Professor at 6 and an Assistant Professor at 4, counting Ph.D. and M.S. (By Research) together. The amendments of 23 October 2025 raised it to 12, 10 and 8 for supervisors in the university’s own departments on its four Chennai campuses. But however much room there is, no supervisor may register more than four new scholars in one session.
3. Age. The same amendments changed the age limit. Supervisors in the university’s departments, its constituent colleges and government or aided institutions can now register new scholars up to age 60 (it was 58). Those in affiliated colleges keep the limit of 63. The July 2026 guidelines page still printed 58. The amendment is the later document.
4. You are not related. Clause 6.4 bars relatives among the scholar, supervisors, committee members and examiners.

What is on the Anna University PhD written test?

It is a two-hour paper set by the Centre for Entrance Examinations, in two parts. The written-test syllabus has applied from October 2025. It splits the paper this way:

• Part I, research methodology (25%), is common to all. It covers research design, literature search and citation indexes, research gaps and hypotheses, validity and reliability, and sampling. It also covers statistics up to t and F tests, ANOVA, chi-square and regression, and then writing, referencing, plagiarism and ethics.
• Part II, core subject (75%), is one paper matched to your PG specialisation. The papers are coded by faculty (PCE for civil, PME for mechanical, PSH for science and humanities). They run from broad subjects down to narrow ones such as Welding Engineering.

You need 50% to reach the interview. After the interview, the Research Board fixes a cut-off on the combined 70:30 score. SC, ST and candidates with more than 40% disability get a 5% relaxation (clause 5.3). What if you have GATE or NET? Under clause 5.4, it frees you from the paper, and your national score takes its place. So rely on that only if the score is a good one.

What happens at the Anna University online interview?

It is a presentation of your proposed research, not a chat about your marks. For July 2026, CFR published a slide format. It asked candidates to keep to 20 slides or fewer, and that includes the title slide. Here are the slides it expects, in order:

1. Topic, your name and reference number, and your proposed supervisor with their affiliation.
2. Educational qualifications with marks, and experience as on 21 August 2026.
3. Any journal or conference papers, with the impact factor.
4. Two slides introducing the research, then three slides summarising the literature, built on the latest two technical papers and three patents.
5. Research gap, objectives, scope, methodology, expected outcome and novelty, one slide each.

The interview carries 30% of your score. Build the deck with your supervisor. They approved your application, and they know what they want to work on. When does Anna University call for PhD applications, and what do you send?

Twice a year. Clause 5.1 asks for two notifications a year. CFR’s FAQ says they usually appear in February (for July) and August (for January). But the July 2026 session shows why you should read the CFR notices page rather than rely on that pattern:

On 27 September 2026 no January 2027 advertisement had appeared. When one does, expect a window of about four weeks. The July 2026 advertisement also carried 250 research scholarships of ₹40,000 a month. They were for meritorious full-timers admitted on the CEG, MIT, ACTech and SAP campuses, in constituent colleges or in government engineering colleges. • The printed application, signed by you, your supervisor and the supervisor’s head of department (and a joint supervisor, if you have one).
• The Doctoral Committee panel your supervisor enters online, with the panel members’ publication details, once you clear the test.
• Final mark sheets or a provisional certificate; a final-semester applicant sends them as soon as they are issued.
• Course-equivalence acknowledgement if your master’s is not a full-time regular degree from a State or Central university, IIT, NIT, IISc, IISER or IIM. For a foreign degree, an AIU equivalence certificate.
• The No Objection Certificate in CFR’s format if you apply part-time, and a relieving order from your employer if you will join full-time.

Once admitted, you pay a ₹17,000 semester fee under the 2026 brochure. Of that, ₹12,000 is the research coordination fee, and you pay it every semester until you submit. Tamil Nadu SC and ST full-time scholars skip the ₹1,500 tuition part. So do candidates with more than 40% disability. Staff of government and aided engineering and polytechnic colleges were offered 50% off, subject to Finance Committee approval.

What happens once Anna University selects you?

You are provisionally registered in January or July. You may defer by one session, but after that the selection lapses (clause 6.3). Your supervisor proposes two panels of experts, and your Doctoral Committee takes one from each (clause 12.2). The committee meets within three weeks to fix your coursework (clause 13.1). That is four PG courses worth 12 credits that you did not take in your master’s, attended with the university’s PG students. Or it can be as many as four Swayam-NPTEL courses at PG level. You get two attempts per course and three years at most. A CGPA of 7.0, a written and oral examination and a seminar then confirm your registration.
