Research institutes in Hyderabad for a PhD

Which Hyderabad labs take PhD scholars, and who awards the degree?

Seven institutes in and around the city run regular PhD intakes or host PhD research. The table gives the degree body first: a CCMB scholar’s thesis goes to AcSIR, a CDFD scholar’s to Faridabad.

Months to watch

• April: NIAB’s first round (1 to 30 April in 2026). NIAB says its calls usually come in April and October, though its 2026-27 calls also included a round in July.
• September to October: CDFD’s January call (to 10 October 2026) and the AcSIR January session for CCMB, IICT, NGRI and NIN (to 31 October 2026).
• November: CCMB’s online test (planned for 5 November 2026) and in-person interviews in the last week; CDFD’s interview rounds run into December.
• Year-round: IICT for fellowship holders, and ICRISAT, which reviews applications in June, September and March.

The pattern is plain from the dates: October is the month when most of the Hyderabad labs close at once. If you qualify JRF in the June NET cycle, you have until then to decide where to apply.

How do CCMB, IICT and NGRI admit through AcSIR?

The Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research is an Institution of National Importance set up by an Act of Parliament. Its January 2027 notice counts 78 member institutes, 38 of them CSIR labs. IICT and NGRI both describe the same cycle: AcSIR admits twice a year, in January and August sessions, and the lab’s AcSIR office then runs coursework, Doctoral Advisory Committee meetings and the viva.

CCMB

The January 2027 notification is the most detailed call of the three:

• Two registrations. Register on the AcSIR portal and choose CCMB, then apply separately on CCMB’s own portal; both closed on 31 October 2026 for this session.
• Degree. A master’s in science with 55%, or a four-year science bachelor’s with 75%, with 5% relaxation for reserved categories.
• Fellowship. A valid national JRF or SRF from CSIR, ICMR, UGC, DBT, DST or similar, or awards such as DBT-BET, INSPIRE or RGNF. CCMB calls this an absolute requirement.
• Selection. A remote-proctored computer test, planned for 5 November 2026, then in-person interviews at CCMB in the last week of November over two days. There is no travel allowance.
• LaCONES. You can instead choose CCMB’s Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species. For “LaCONES only” applicants, GATE in Ecology and Evolution counts in place of a fellowship, the written test is waived, and a statement of purpose is screened with the interview.

IICT

IICT’s academics page runs PhDs in chemical and biological sciences and in chemical engineering, and says scholars can register with AcSIR “(preferably)” or with other state and central universities. It also says it takes fellowship holders round the year and will host outstation applicants in its hostel, by appointment, to meet a supervisor. That is worth using: a conversation with a scientist before you apply is normal here.

NGRI

NGRI’s AcSIR page lists the courses its scholars take, starting with Research Methodology (4 credits) and Research Publication and Ethics (2 credits), and links to the January 2027 admission notice. It does not publish lab-specific eligibility, so read AcSIR’s own session rules before you apply.

How is admission to ICMR-NIN different from the CSIR labs?

NIN’s PhD page says it is a recognised centre for the PhD in AcSIR’s Faculty of Medical Research, and several of its scientists are AcSIR guides. Two things make it unlike CCMB or IICT.

First, the call to watch is AcSIR’s, not NIN’s. NIN admits within AcSIR’s Ph.D. (Medical Research), which the January 2027 notice runs across 28 ICMR institutes, so your application goes through AcSIR’s twice-yearly admission (31 October 2026 was the deadline for January 2027) rather than a separate NIN advertisement.

Second, NIN also recruits students against projects. Its page says scientists who need a student in a particular subject post an advertisement with the qualifications for that project, on the NIN and ICMR websites, and candidates apply against it. If your subject is nutrition, food science or public-health nutrition, check both sites every few weeks rather than waiting for the January and August cycles.

Why do CDFD and NIAB scholars register with RCB Faridabad?

Both are institutes of the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council under DBT, and both send their scholars to the council’s Regional Centre for Biotechnology in Faridabad for the degree. You live and work in Hyderabad throughout; the thesis and the degree go through Faridabad.

CDFD

The PhD-I-2027 call takes applicants with a master’s in any science, technology or agriculture, or an MBBS, plus a junior research fellowship awarded by CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR or DST. A valid fellowship is, in CDFD’s words, an absolute requirement, and the call excludes certain awards, so check its list against your own award letter. New this time: if you have already activated a fellowship elsewhere, you cannot apply. The portal was set to close on 10 October 2026. Interviews are held online and in person, with shortlists for the two rounds due by 20 October and 6 November. Selected scholars must live on campus.

NIAB

NIAB, on a 100-acre campus in Gachibowli, has more than 100 PhD students working on animal health, vaccines, genomics and related areas. Its 2026-27 calls asked for a fellowship valid for five years (CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR or INSPIRE JRF, or UGC-RGNF) and said plainly that GATE or MPAT alone is not enough. The RSP-IV call ran only from 14 to 22 July 2026, with online interviews on 27 and 29 July, so a missed week meant a missed round. The April round added an in-person interview and a rotation through three labs before you are placed. Coursework lasts six months, a weekly journal club is compulsory, and students are expected to live in the campus hostel.

Can you do your PhD research at ICRISAT in Patancheru?

Yes, but not a PhD from ICRISAT. Its Study-cum-Research Program hosts doctoral students from other universities for between six months and three years. You must already be enrolled, your research at ICRISAT must count towards your degree, and you must have finished your coursework, because you will not be free to attend classes.

The 2025-26 call offered 24 PhD places at Patancheru, the largest share in crop breeding, genetics and genomics, with others in natural resource management and soil and water research. Applications are taken all year but reviewed in June, September and March, and must reach ICRISAT at least 45 days before you want to start. Indian applicants paid a ₹1,500 fee. ICRISAT also charges a bench fee (USD 150 for a doctoral student’s first 12 months, then USD 50 per six months), you must carry your own health and accident insurance, and only a few scholarships are available.

This suits an agriculture or plant-science scholar whose own university supervisor agrees to share the work. Settle with your university, before you apply, how the ICRISAT scientist will be recognised on your committee.

Is there any way into a Hyderabad lab without a JRF?

Not at CCMB, CDFD or NIAB, which all say the fellowship is essential. There are other ways in, though:

• GATE or GPAT at a CSIR lab. AcSIR’s January 2027 notice advertises CSIR GATE and GPAT Junior Research Fellowships at CSIR institutes for its PhD and integrated M.Tech.-PhD programmes. Engineering and pharmacy graduates should look at this before assuming the labs are closed to them.
• GATE in Ecology and Evolution for LaCONES, as described above.
• Project posts. IICT recruits project fellows through walk-in interviews and says those with at least two years of experience and a publication record may be encouraged to join its PhD programme, though a project post does not guarantee a seat. NIN’s project advertisements work in a similar way.
• A university PhD with a lab supervisor. Clause 10.2 of Osmania University’s 2026-27 PhD rules allows a scholar guided by a supervisor at a recognised national research laboratory, naming IICT and NIN, to have a co-supervisor at Osmania or at the lab.
