PhD admission in Chennai

In Chennai, how does each institution select its PhD scholars?

Most Chennai scholars end up at one of the two state universities, so the sections after the table deal with those in detail.

Two points are easy to miss. First, “Chennai” for admission purposes is wider than the corporation limits: the University of Madras describes its affiliated colleges as spread over Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts, and Anna University’s research centres are wherever its approved colleges are. Second, the institutes (IIT Madras, IMSc, CMI) take national scores seriously in a way the state universities do not. If you have no GATE, NET, JEST or NBHM result, that leaves Anna University, the University of Madras and the deemed universities.

How does Anna University’s Centre for Research admission work?

Anna University runs one admission for all its departments in Chennai, its constituent colleges and the approved research centres in affiliated engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu. The Centre for Research (CFR) screens the applications and the Centre for Entrance Examinations sets the written test. Under clause 5.1 of the R2025 regulations the university notifies admission twice a year, and the CFR’s own FAQ says the notifications usually come out in August for the January session and February for the July session.

What the July 2026 brochure adds to the regulations:

• You need a supervisor before you apply. The online form goes in with a recognised supervisor’s approval; without it, or through a supervisor whose quota is full, the application is rejected. Check the CFR supervisor list and the list of recognised departments first.
• Four per supervisor per session. However many vacancies a supervisor has overall, only four new scholars can register with them in one session.
• The test. Two hours, 25% research methodology and 75% the core subject you choose, with 50% needed to reach the interview. A valid GATE score or NET exempts you, and that score is then used in place of the written test marks.
• Who cannot apply. An engineering or technology master’s taken through distance, weekend or work-integrated mode is not accepted, and the July 2026 brochure added that school teachers are not eligible.
• Fees. The 2026 brochure lists ₹30,500 at admission: ₹3,500 one-time, a refundable ₹10,000 caution deposit and the first semester’s ₹17,000, which then recurs every semester until you submit the thesis.

Selected candidates are registered provisionally in January or July, and can defer by one session before the selection lapses. Minimum duration is two years full-time in engineering and three in science and humanities. The thesis rules are set centrally too; our Anna University thesis format guide covers them.

Why does University of Madras admission differ from college to college?

The University of Madras does not hold a central entrance test. Its Research Regulations 2021 (as amended by the Senate in March 2023) hand the whole selection to a Departmental Selection Committee in each university department, affiliated college or recognised research institution. The university then ratifies the admission and issues provisional registration. So the same subject can have a different paper, and cut-off, in two colleges a few kilometres apart.

The Registrar’s circular of 30 May 2026 for the July 2026 session shows how the steps run:

1. Apply online between 1 and 30 June 2026 (₹1,770 including GST; Tamil Nadu SC/ST candidates exempt), and hand a hard copy with enclosures to the department or college where you want to work, by 30 June.
2. The committee meets only after that date. It sets the entrance (35 marks written, 15 oral) and prepares the merit list, finishing by 31 July.
3. Your supervisor enters your details on a separate portal in July.
4. The college forwards everything to the university by 14 August for provisional registration.

Two rules deserve attention. Clause 3.2.1 builds the merit list from 50% of your PG marks and 50% of the entrance, so a weak master’s score is hard to make up in the test. And if your PG degree is from another university, you need an eligibility certificate from Madras before the admission is ratified. The circular also bars supervisors in their last two years of service from taking new scholars.

Holders of UGC or CSIR-JRF, DBT, INSPIRE and ICMR fellowships can be admitted without the entrance at any time of the year (clause 3.1.3). Research institutes recognised by the university also admit through this route: ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology, for example, runs its epidemiology, biostatistics and microbiology PhDs as a University of Madras centre. Can you get a PhD seat in Chennai without NET or GATE?

Yes, but not everywhere, and the national fellowships that come with JRF are a separate question (see our PhD fellowships guide). Here is where each Chennai institution stands on a scholar with no national score:

• Anna University: you sit the CFR written test. GATE or NET only saves you the test.
• University of Madras: you sit the department or college entrance. There is no NET requirement in the regulations.
• SRMIST and VIT Chennai: their own tests are the main route.
• IIT Madras: depends on your degree. For a PhD in the sciences or in humanities and social sciences, a national score is required. An engineering or technology master’s with a good record is exempt, and candidates under the external registration scheme, who apply as working professionals, may not need one.
• IMSc: no. Physics needs JEST, NET, GATE or TIFR-GS; mathematics needs the NBHM test or a top-30 CSIR-UGC NET rank.
• CMI: its own entrance exam counts, so a national score is one way in, not the only one.

If you are a science postgraduate in Chennai without JRF, our advice is to apply in both the Anna and Madras cycles in the same year. Their windows fall in different months (Anna’s around March–April and August–September, Madras’s in June and December), so applying to both costs little, and a year spent waiting on one is a year lost.

When do Chennai institutions take PhD applications?

Dates are from the latest notification we could read; check each site before you plan.

• February to April: Anna University’s July-session window (9 March to 7 April in 2026). CMI’s applications (2 March to 4 April in 2026).
• November to March: IIT Madras takes applications for its July intake (11 November 2025 to 30 March 2026 for July 2026).
• January: the NBHM written test that IMSc uses for mathematics (24 January in 2026).
• May: CMI’s entrance exam (2 May 2026), IMSc’s physics deadline (25 May 2026) and SRMIST’s 31 May application date.
• June: the University of Madras July-session portal (1 to 30 June 2026), IMSc and CMI interviews.
• August and September: Anna University’s January-session notification, which its Centre for Research says is usually released in August.
• November and December: SRMIST’s 30 November date, VITREE for VIT’s January session, and the University of Madras January-session portal (December, per its regulations).

IIT Madras also registers scholars in January (its employer forms refer to both “July” and “Jan” semesters), so look for the January call separately on research.iitm.ac.in.

Which Chennai route suits which scholar?

M.E. or M.Tech. graduates teaching in an engineering college usually go to Anna University, because their college is an approved research centre or near one. Secure the supervisor’s consent first; screening stops there without it.

M.Sc. or M.A. graduates in arts and science colleges mostly register with the University of Madras, often in the same college where they studied. The decentralised process favours candidates who already know the department and have talked to a supervisor about a vacancy before June or December.

Candidates with GATE, JEST or JRF should apply to IIT Madras, IMSc or CMI as well as the state universities. The institute routes come with their own stipends (IIT Madras’s July 2026 brochure lists ₹37,000 a month for the first two years for scholars on its Half-Time Research Assistantship) and the competition is national, so do not treat them as the only plan.
