To get PhD admission at Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), you apply on its Jnanashodha portal, clear its entrance test and face an interview. The test is the VTU Eligibility Test for Research (VTU-ETR). You skip it if NET, SLET, GATE, CAT, an M.Phil. or a still-valid ETR score exempts you. Then you upload a research proposal with your preferred supervisors. You present it at a 30-mark pre-registration interview. After that, VTU itself allots the research centre and supervisor in order of merit. For 2026, the ETR notification is dated 31 August 2026. Applications ran from 1 to 21 September, and the test is tentatively on 11 October 2026.

VTU is based in Belagavi, but most of its research centres are in engineering, management and architecture colleges across Karnataka. How does VTU sit beside IISc, Bangalore University and the private universities? That is on our PhD admission in Bengaluru page. This guide goes through VTU’s own rules, the Ph.D. Regulations 2023, clause by clause. The UGC’s national rules get only a mention here. You’ll find them in our India admission guide. Who can apply for a VTU PhD, faculty by faculty?

VTU offers the PhD in eight faculties. They are Civil Engineering Sciences, Mechanical Engineering Sciences, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Sciences, Computer and Information Sciences, Technology, Management, Applied Sciences and Architecture (clause 23PHD 3.8). The ETR also admits you to the part-time M.S. (by Research). The minimum marks differ by faculty (clause 23PHD 2.1):

  • Engineering: M.E., M.Tech. or M.S. (Research), with a CGPA of 6.75 out of 10 or 60% at either the bachelor’s or the master’s level (clause 23PHD 2.1.1). Foreign degrees need an AIU equivalence certificate.
  • Management: MBA or equivalent, with 6.75 or 60% at the master’s level. The bachelor’s does not rescue a weak MBA here.
  • Applied Sciences: M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Geology, MCA, or an allied PG, with 6.75 or 60% at either level.
  • Architecture: M.Arch. with the same marks, or a B.Arch. with ten years of teaching, research or practice, subject to the Admissions Committee.

If you come straight from a four-year bachelor’s degree, you need 75%. SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), differently abled and EWS candidates get 5% relaxation (clause 23PHD 2.1.6). The degree is awarded in the faculty you register in. And clause 23PHD 4.3.5(7) forbids changing faculty after provisional admission. So choose it with your supervisor’s field in view.

What does the VTU-ETR test, and what score do you need?

The ETR is VTU’s single entrance for all its research centres. Its rules sit in clauses 23PHD 4.1 to 4.2.4 of the 2023 regulations and in the VTU-ETR-2026 notification:

The VTU Eligibility Test for Research (VTU-ETR), from the 2023 regulations, the October 2025 papers and the VTU-ETR-2026 notification
ItemWhat VTU’s documents say
Who sets itExaminers appointed by the Registrar and approved by the Admissions Committee; setters and evaluators must hold a PhD in the field (clause 23PHD 4.2.3).
What it coversHalf research methodology, half the subject (clause 23PHD 4.1).
Paper format100 marks of multiple-choice questions on an OMR sheet. The October 2025 papers ran three hours, one mark a question, no negative marking, non-programmable calculators allowed.
ScoringMarks out of 100 are scaled down to 70 (clause 23PHD 4.2.4).
Qualifying mark35 of 70 for general merit; 31 of 70 in the reserved and differently abled categories. VTU announces the list of qualifiers without publishing the marks.
ValidityTwo academic years (clause 23PHD 4.2.2). The 2026 notification accepts ETR results from the May 2024 round onwards, on a fresh application and fee.
2026 roundNotification of 31 August 2026. Apply 1 to 21 September 2026; test tentatively on 11 October 2026. Fee ₹2,000, or ₹1,000 for SC, ST, Category-I and PwD. You choose a city; VTU allots the centre on the hall ticket.

The most useful preparation material is VTU’s own. The Jnanashodha portal publishes the October 2025 question papers and key answers for about two dozen disciplines. They run from Aerospace Engineering and Architecture to MBA, MCA and Physics. Where answers were challenged, you get the revised keys too. Work through your discipline’s paper under a three-hour limit. For the research methodology half, our research methodology MCQs cover the usual ground.

What if two candidates tie? VTU compares ETR marks first, then PG marks or CGPA, then UG marks. Last comes date of birth, and the elder is placed higher (clause 23PHD 4.3.3(5)).

Who skips the VTU-ETR, and why does it change who gets a supervisor first?

Clause 23PHD 4.2.2 exempts five groups, with the Admissions Committee’s approval:

  • full-time NRI, foreign national and PIO candidates
  • teachers selected under ADF, QIP or FIP
  • candidates qualified in UGC-NET (including JRF), UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF), SLET, GATE, CAT or a similar national test, within the score’s validity
  • M.Phil. holders
  • candidates with a valid VTU-ETR score.

Exempt candidates still apply on the portal and pay the fee. The 2026 notification is clear that earlier ETR qualifiers must send a fresh application.

The part most applicants miss is the order of allotment. VTU prepares two merit lists (clause 23PHD 4.3.3). The first is for exempt candidates, and it ranks them on interview marks alone. The second is for ETR-qualified candidates. It adds the scaled ETR score to the interview mark. Clause 23PHD 4.3.4 then fills supervisor vacancies in sequence. ADF, QIP, FIP and foreign candidates come first. Then come NET, SLET, GATE, CAT and M.Phil. holders. Only after them does the ETR list get a turn. So a popular supervisor with two open seats may be full before the ETR list is reached. Do you hold a GATE or NET score within its validity? Claim the exemption, even if you expect to do well in the ETR.

What happens at VTU’s pre-registration interview, and how are supervisors allotted?

Once the qualifiers are announced, exempt and qualified candidates upload three things on Jnanashodha (clause 23PHD 4.3). The first is the research proposal in VTU’s format. The second is your supervisors, preferably three, and any co-supervisors. The third is the vacancy position each of those supervisors has. The pre-registration interview is faculty-wise, and it carries 30 marks. You face an expert committee that the Vice-Chancellor sets up for each specialisation. It judges your knowledge of the area and whether the work can be done at that institution. It also asks whether the work can add new knowledge (clause 23PHD 4.3.1). Our research proposal guide covers the structure.

Check the vacancy you enter. Clause 23PHD 5.4 caps a supervisor’s total across PhD, M.S. (Research) and integrated PhD. The cap is 8 for a Professor, 6 for an Associate Professor and 4 for an Assistant Professor. It also splits those seats by category. For a Professor, the table allows four general-merit scholars and one SC, ST or Category-I scholar. It adds one from the other reserved categories and two foreign nationals, whose seats move to general merit if unused. On top of that, new allotments in one academic year cannot exceed 25% of the permitted strength (clause 23PHD 5.4(8)). That is two for a Professor or Associate Professor and one for an Assistant Professor. So a guide with “four vacancies” may be able to take only one or two of you this year.

VTU, not the college, allots the supervisor, the co-supervisor, the research centre and the faculty (clause 23PHD 4.3.4). A grievance about the allotment goes to the Admissions Committee through the Registrar. Its decision is final. Is your supervisor within three years of retirement? They get new scholars only if their institution undertakes to keep them until the scholar finishes. Staff of industries or other institutions without a VTU research centre can only be co-supervisors (clause 23PHD 5.2(3)).

How do VTU’s full-time and part-time routes differ?

Full-time is for candidates who are not employed, or who are sponsored or deputed (clause 23PHD 2.2). You can’t take a job during the programme, but you may hold a fellowship or assistantship. Teachers under ADF, QIP or FIP can only study full-time. They need an NOC and at least three years of study leave on full salary.

Part-time needs a year of work since your master’s (clause 23PHD 2.3). That can be teaching in an engineering college, polytechnic, university or deemed university. Or it can be research staff work in a government, private or corporate body. Your employer’s NOC must say three things. You may study part-time. Your duties leave enough time for research. And you will be relieved for coursework if needed. Once admitted, a part-timer must stay at the centre for fifteen days in each half-year, ahead of every RAC review, up to the final synopsis. How does that work for someone in a Bengaluru job? See our part-time PhD in Bengaluru page.

VTU’s own doctoral fellowship is Jnana Yaana. It is for full-time scholars in the university’s own departments in four places (Belagavi, Mysuru, Kalaburagi and Muddenahalli). The departments are Civil, Mechanical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, Aerospace, Nanotechnology and Management Studies. The 2026 notification sets its age limit at under 30. SC, ST, women and physically challenged candidates get five years’ relaxation, and OBC candidates get three, with five at most in all. State schemes open to VTU scholars are listed in our Karnataka fellowships guide.

What do you pay VTU, and what happens after you are selected?

After the Admissions Committee approves the list, you have 15 days to join. A further seven days are allowed with a ₹1,000 penalty. After that, VTU runs the waiting list for another 15 days and then closes admission (clause 23PHD 4.3.5). Every scholar’s provisional registration starts on the same date: the next working day after admissions close.

The fee notification of 30 March 2023 is the one still linked from VTU’s PhD page. It splits fees between the university and the research centre:

  • To VTU, once: application ₹2,000 (₹1,000 SC, ST, Category-I and PwD; ₹3,000 foreign), University Development Fee ₹3,000.
  • To VTU, every year: registration ₹7,000 and e-consortium ₹3,000.
  • To VTU, by stage: ₹1,500 per coursework subject examination, ₹15,000 for the viva-voce after coursework, and ₹40,000 for thesis submission and final viva. It is ₹10,000 more if a foreign examiner evaluates the thesis. A first plagiarism-check rejection costs a ₹5,000 penalty, and a second one ₹10,000.
  • To the research centre: tuition ₹15,000 a year, plus library ₹1,000, career guidance ₹1,000, cultural activities ₹100 and application-cum-admission ₹300.

Coursework comes next. It is 12 credits or more, and Research Methodology and the Research and Publication Ethics course are both compulsory. You take it through NPTEL or at your institution, as the RAC recommends. You need 55% to continue (clause 23PHD 6.1). It must be finished within two years, and then comes a viva-voce. Registration is confirmed only after both. A Registrar (Evaluation) circular of 16 December 2025 adds one more rule. The coursework completion certificate must be in VTU’s format, with a ₹500 fee. Open seminars, publications and the pre-submission colloquium follow. The thesis rules are in our VTU thesis format guide. The programme runs three to six years, extendable by two. Women and candidates with over 40% disability get two more.

FAQ

Questions scholars ask

How many times a year does VTU admit PhD scholars?

Clause 23PHD 4.2 says admission is made twice in an academic year. The ETR rounds we could trace were held in May 2024, October 2025 and, tentatively, October 2026. So check the VTU notifications rather than assume a fixed month.

I qualified the VTU-ETR last year. Do I need to apply again?

Yes. The score stays valid for two academic years, and the 2026 notification accepts results from the May 2024 round onwards. But you must submit a fresh application on Jnanashodha and pay the application fee again.

Can I choose my own VTU supervisor?

You can name supervisors, preferably three, with their vacancies, when you upload your proposal. VTU then allots the supervisor in merit order under clause 23PHD 4.3.4. So your first choice is not guaranteed. A grievance goes to the Admissions Committee through the Registrar.

Can a scientist in my company be my main VTU supervisor?

Only if the company has a research centre approved by VTU. Otherwise, under clause 23PHD 5.2(3), staff of industries and other institutions can be recognised only as co-supervisors, alongside a supervisor at a VTU research centre.

Does the VTU-ETR have negative marking?

The October 2025 question papers said there was no negative marking and allowed only non-programmable scientific calculators. Read the instructions on your own paper, as VTU can change them.
