Who is eligible to sit the Osmania PhD entrance test?

The Category-II notification of 24 August 2026 asks for a master’s degree in the concerned subject with 55%, or 50% for SC, ST, BC, PWD and EWS candidates. The Ph.D. Rules and Regulations 2026-2027 add the national alternatives in rule 3. That is an M.Phil. with 55%, or a four-year bachelor’s degree with 75%. Grades are converted to percentages to check the cut-off. The 2026 information brochure then sets three filters. They decide more applications than the percentage does:

• Your result must be out. Students still waiting for their postgraduate result are not eligible. This is stricter than many universities. So time your application around your final-semester result.
• Distance degrees count. A postgraduate degree through distance mode from a recognised university, approved by the concerned authority, is accepted.
• Nobody checks for you. Eligibility is not verified when you apply or when hall tickets are issued. It is checked at admission, after you have paid and sat the test.

You write the test in the subject you want your PhD in, not the subject of your master’s. Which degrees feed which test? Osmania publishes a list of allied subjects that decides it. Some entries are generous. Genetics accepts master’s degrees across the life sciences and allied fields. It even lists MBBS, BDS and B.Tech. Biotechnology among the qualifying courses. Astronomy accepts M.Sc. Astrophysics, Physics or Mathematics. Economics accepts Applied, Mathematical and Development Economics and Econometrics. Others are narrow. Chemistry lists only M.Sc. Chemistry in its specialisations. Geophysics accepts Geology or Geochemistry only if you studied Physics and Mathematics at graduation. Read your subject’s entry before you pay.

The degree is awarded in twelve faculties, from Arts and Oriental Languages to Engineering, Pharmacy, Technology and Informatics. Foreign nationals apply separately as Category-III, on supernumerary seats. They go through the Office of the International Affairs.

What is on the Osmania PhD entrance test, and what is the pass mark?

Expect one sitting of 90 minutes and 100 objective questions on screen. The score is scaled down to 70 marks for the merit list. Questions come only from the syllabus for your subject, which the Directorate posts on osmania.ac.in and ouadmissions.com. But expect more than plain recall. The brochure names three or four item types, such as analogies, classification and matching. It also names comprehension of a research study, an experiment or a theoretical position. The medium is English, except in the language subjects.

To qualify, you need 45% if you are in the Open category, 40% if BC or EWS, and 35% if SC, ST or PwD (rule 7.2(c)). Qualifying only makes you eligible for the next step. Two practical points:

• Check the key. After the test, the question papers and keys go online for objections. It costs ₹200 per question, refunded within seven working days if you are right.
• The pass lasts one cycle. The 2026 result is valid only for the admission process under the 2026 notification.

Registration costs ₹2,000, and SC, ST, BC, PWD and EWS applicants pay ₹1,500. The tentative examination schedule spread the subject papers over three days. Each day had three 90-minute sessions (9.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m. and 3.30 p.m.). Part of every paper tests how you read a research study. Dates move. The press note of 24 September 2026 pushed the deadline to 5 October and said a revised test schedule would follow. So check the Directorate’s dates sheet for the 2026 or later cycle before you plan.

How many Category-II PhD seats does Osmania have in 2026?

Seats are notified subject by subject, and the Directorate holds a test only where a vacancy exists (rule 5.1). The 2026 vacancy statement (Annexure-I) lists provisional Category-II seats with a category breakup for each subject. The list of test subjects runs to 53 codes. The spread is very uneven:

The breakup follows the Telangana reservation policy (rule 7.4). So you will see BC-A to BC-E and SC groups I to III, not a single BC or SC figure. Seats for women are marked (W) inside each group. In small subjects the whole intake may be one unreserved seat. Does your subject show one or two seats? Sit the test, but also apply wherever else your degree allows.

These are Category-II seats only. Under rule 6, half the available vacancies go to Category-I first. Any that JRF holders do not take pass to Category-II.

How does a JRF or teacher-fellowship holder join through Category-I?

By a single online application and an interview, with no test. Rule 6.1 names the fellowships that count. They are JRF through UGC-NET, CSIR, ICAR, ICMR or DBT, DST-INSPIRE, the NFSC, NFST and NFPWD fellowships, and the FIP and QIP teacher fellowships. For 2026, the Category-I press note of 15 May 2026 opened applications from 20 May to 10 June. Interviews were tentatively from 18 June.

At the interview you explain your research interests. The Ph.D. Admission Committee or Departmental Research Committee then allots a supervisor in that area who has a vacancy. The supervisor must give written consent. Category-I scholars work full-time only (rules 6.1(e) and 13.1). A full-time scholar may not take a job during the tenure. But research or consultancy project appointments do not count as employment (rule 13.3).

Two things are easy to miss. A JRF holder who does not get a Category-I seat can still write the Category-II test that autumn (rule 5.3). And a NET without JRF gives no exemption at Osmania, whether it is for Assistant Professor or for PhD admission only. You write the test like everyone else. How does Osmania allot research supervisors, and where can you research?

You don’t bring a supervisor’s consent with the application, as some universities require. After the Category-II results, the Dean of each faculty works with the department’s selection committee. Together they prepare a merit list for interview. The faculty decides how many to call by the vacancies (rule 7.2). Selection is 70 marks from the test and 30 from the interview, and ties go to the older candidate. The admission committee then submits a list of provisionally admitted candidates already assigned to supervisors. Several rules shape who can take you:

• Caps. A Professor may guide eight scholars, an Associate Professor six and an Assistant Professor four (rule 8.7), counting co-supervision (rule 11).
• Half at a time. In any one year, no more than 50% of a supervisor’s allottable number may be filled at first allotment (rule 8.8).
• When a vacancy opens. Only when a current scholar submits the thesis, is cancelled, or runs out the course duration (rule 9.3). A supervisor whose scholars are mid-way has no seat, however willing.
• Retirement. A supervisor within three years of superannuation cannot take new scholars (rule 8.10).
• No relatives. The committee must check that you are not related to your supervisor (rule 9.2).

Who can be a supervisor? Permanent faculty of the university and its affiliated postgraduate colleges and institutes. So can scientists in central or state research institutions whose degrees Osmania awards (rules 8.1 and 8.2). Your supervisor may work in a recognised national laboratory such as IICT or NIN. Then rule 10.2 allows a co-supervisor from the university or the laboratory, and rule 10.3 lets the roles reverse. The city’s laboratories are listed in research institutes in Hyderabad. There is one catch to weigh. Hostel rooms go only to scholars whose supervisor works on the campus or in a constituent college. That holds even if a co-supervisor is from Osmania (rules 14.2 and 14.3).

You can change supervisor later, but only once. It is allowed in exceptional cases such as death or six months’ unavailability. You must then work with the new supervisor for a year before submitting (rule 17).

What do fees, coursework and the first year cost you at Osmania?

Rule 16 sets the annual fee by faculty and mode:

• Engineering, Technology, Science, Pharmacy, Management and Informatics: ₹20,000 a year full-time, ₹30,000 part-time.
• Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Social Sciences and Oriental Languages: ₹15,000 full-time, ₹25,000 part-time.

Other university charges come on top. The first year then runs to a fixed pattern:

• One semester of coursework in your department or research centre, as four taught papers of 60 contact hours each. They are Research and Publication Ethics (2 credits), Research Methodology (4), an advanced paper in your subject (4) and Artificial Intelligence (2). The syllabi are mapped to a Sustainable Development Goal (rule 20.4).
• A three-hour, 100-mark examination in each paper, valued by two recognised supervisors, with 55% needed in every paper. Fail two consecutive attempts and the registration is cancelled automatically (rules 21.5 and 21.6).
• A Research Design Seminar within three months of the coursework result: a full literature review and plan of work. Miss the three months and the registration stands cancelled (rule 23.2).
• Half-yearly progress reports through your supervisor, the Research Advisory Committee and the Departmental Research Committee. Two late or unsatisfactory reports in a row can end the registration (rule 22.2).

An M.Phil. completed in regular mode exempts you from the coursework if it covered the same course work (rule 20.2). The minimum duration is four years full-time and five part-time, including coursework. The maximum is six years, with up to two more by re-registration (rule 4).
