PhD in agriculture in Dharwad: UAS Dharwad admission

Why do you apply for a UAS Dharwad PhD on a Karnataka government portal?

Because since 2016–17 UAS Dharwad has not admitted doctoral scholars on its own schedule. The 2026–27 Information Bulletin explains that each farm university used to hold separate admissions, which meant clashing dates for candidates. From 2015–16 the master’s intake became common, with UAS Dharwad running that first common admission, and from 2016–17 doctoral programmes joined. Today the six universities (UAS Bangalore, UAS Dharwad, UAS Raichur, UHS Bagalkot, KSNUAHS Shivamogga and the new UAS Mandya) share one application on the common admission portal. The coordinating university changes; for 2026–27 it is UAS Bangalore.

So you do not write to a Dharwad professor and apply to the department. You fill one online form, pay one fee (₹2,700, or ₹1,350 for SC, ST and Category-I candidates), and choose exactly one Ph.D. subject. The bulletin is firm on that: a doctoral applicant “may choose only one subject”, and it cannot be changed after the final submission. Seats at UAS Dharwad, Raichur and Bangalore are then allotted from a common merit list in rounds, with online option entry and a mock allotment before the first real one.

For 2026–27 the portal and the bulletin’s calendar gave 5 September to 30 September 2026 for applications. The bulletin’s running text says applications open on 1 September instead; we use the portal’s date. Dates for the merit list and allotment rounds were to be announced later on the portal, so watch it rather than the UAS Dharwad site. UAS Dharwad’s own doctoral admissions page simply links to the portal each year.

The one step that does bring you to a campus is document checking. The bulletin’s calendar asks every fresh doctoral applicant to upload the NTA score card and the master’s OGPA card issued by their university’s Registrar, and then have the original documents verified at the Registrar’s office of the farm university concerned. Candidates claiming a special-category seat (defence, disability, sports, NCC, NSS or cultural) go instead for verification and counselling at UAS Bangalore’s GKVK campus.

How is the Karnataka merit list for a PhD worked out?

Two numbers, weighted equally: your score in the NTA’s ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) examination and your final master’s OGPA. The bulletin says the farm universities began using NTA scores for admissions in 2023–24 “to reduce the burden on students for appearing in multiple entrance examination”, having adopted the 50:50 weighting in 2022–23. If two candidates tie, the higher entrance score wins, then the older candidate.

This is a different balance from its neighbours; KAU in Kerala, for instance, gives the ICAR mark 75 of 100. In Karnataka a strong OGPA can make up for an average exam, and the reverse. The minimum is also higher than many applicants expect:

• an OGPA of 7.50 out of 10 (2.50 out of 4 in a trimester system), or 7.00 (2.00 out of 4) for SC, ST and Category-I;
• a master’s from a state, central or deemed agricultural, horticultural or forestry university, or a college affiliated to one, under the 10+2+4+2 pattern;
• for a marks-only transcript, a Registrar’s certificate converting the percentage to a ten-point OGPA.

Horanadu and Gadinadu Kannadigas are admitted under Government of Karnataka orders. The bulletin defines a Horanadu Kannadiga as someone who studied from the first to the tenth standard in a Kannada-medium school outside Karnataka.

Two doctoral subjects across the six universities do not match an ICAR stream: Food Science and Nutrition and Agricultural Statistics. For these the farm universities set their own 100-mark MCQ test, 75 minutes long, with a pass mark of 50% (40% for SC, ST and Category-I). In 2026–27 it was scheduled for 6 October 2026, at the headquarters of the university that awarded your master’s, or at Bengaluru for candidates from outside Karnataka.

Which PhD subjects does UAS Dharwad offer in 2026–27, and on which campus?

Annexure II of the bulletin gives the roster, by college and subject:

Most seats, 46 of the 52, are in Dharwad itself. The forestry doctorate is at Sirsi in Uttara Kannada, so a forestry applicant should expect to live there, not in Dharwad. The roster also marks a few seats for candidates from the Kalyana Karnataka region, such as one each in Genetics and Plant Breeding and Agricultural Economics.

Notice what is missing. Apart from Vegetable Science, horticulture doctorates in the north sit with UHS Bagalkot, whose colleges at Bagalkot and Arabhavi appear on the same portal. If your subject is not on the Dharwad list, you still choose that one subject and, at option entry, pick the farm universities that offer it, since the merit list is common.

How do ICAR-quota scholars join UAS Dharwad?

Separately from the Karnataka list. The bulletin places 30% of the total intake of the farm universities “at the disposal of ICAR” for candidates from inside or outside the state. Those seats are filled by ICAR’s own counselling, on the rank from the NTA’s AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.), and UAS Dharwad then posts an admission notice for each round on its doctoral admissions page.

For 2025–26 that page listed three ICAR-quota admission notices: a first round, a second round and a mop-up round. For 2026–27, ICAR’s public notice of 25 September 2026 scheduled counselling for doctoral All India Quota seats, in all streams including veterinary, from 29 September 2026. That is the same week the Karnataka portal closed its own applications, so the two queues run side by side.

One practical point. ICAR’s rounds follow its own timetable, not the Karnataka allotment, so a scholar admitted in a later round should ask the department early how first-semester courses will be handled. If you hold both an ICAR rank and a Karnataka merit position, compare the colleges on offer in each before accepting either seat.

Is there a PhD quota for teachers and scientists already working in Karnataka?

Yes, but it is small and only for the farm universities’ own staff. Each farm university may admit ten in-service teachers or scientists over and above its seat matrix: five from its own staff and five from the other participating farm universities, with no more than one per subject. You need five years of experience by the application deadline (30 September in 2026), must apply online, and must send the filled form through your employer to the Registrar, UAS Bangalore, by that date. You also need an ICAR score or, for a stand-alone subject, a pass in the farm universities’ test.

In-service merit is weighted differently from regular merit:

• 50% for experience in teaching, research or extension (up to 30 marks) and publications, including popular articles (up to 20);
• 25% for the entrance score;
• 25% for the master’s OGPA.

An employee of any other body, such as the state agriculture department or a private company, is not counted as in-service. The bulletin says such candidates apply and compete “as regular candidates”. The doctoral programme runs for at least six semesters and at most fourteen, and for students admitted from 2022–23 there is no re-admission, so plan leave for the full period before you accept a seat.

How does Karnataka reimburse PhD fees for SC and ST scholars at UAS Dharwad?

Through the Social Welfare Department or the university’s SCSP and TSP grants, depending on family income. The Karnataka farm universities publish one common fee table for all six campuses:

Over three years that comes to roughly ₹3.46 lakh, including the refundable caution money. Karnataka SC and ST students with parental income up to ₹2.5 lakh pay nothing at admission and claim the fee back from the Social Welfare Department, giving an undertaking to refund it if needed; between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹10 lakh, the university meets the fee from SCSP and TSP grants, subject to budget. SC and ST students from other states pay the general fee and claim it from their home state. Category-I, OBC and minority students pay in full and claim from the relevant department.

We did not find a UAS Dharwad order setting a university fellowship for doctoral scholars, so we give no figure.
