Where in Chandigarh and Mohali can you do a health-sciences PhD?

For a doctor, PGIMER is the obvious first stop. For a nurse, the National Institute of Nursing Education at PGIMER had 13 seats across six guides in July 2026, more than most clinical departments. A pharmacist has real choice among all three, but should know that NIPER’s institute funding needs GPAT, GATE or NET unless you hold an M.D., MDS, M.V.Sc. or Pharm.D.

Why must a PGIMER guide sign your application before the test?

Because every PGIMER seat belongs to a named guide, and that guide’s recommendation is part of the form. PGIMER advertises each session separately; its PhD page says admission notices usually appear in September or October for January and in March or April for July. The July 2026 form was open online from 10 April to 9 May 2026, with an application fee of ₹1,500, or ₹1,200 for SC and ST candidates. The seat notice is the document to study. In July 2026 Community Medicine and the School of Public Health had 18 seats across ten faculty members, Medical Microbiology 12, and many clinical departments one or two. The sequence ran like this:

   Read the seat notice

   Admission Notice 03/2026 of 11 April 2026 listed July 2026 seats guide by guide, from Anaesthesia to Virology. An addendum of 4 May added one seat in Pharmacology.

   Get a faculty member to sign

   You name one faculty member, who must recommend you on Annexure-6. The guide may refuse, and you may apply in only one department. Guides are asked to endorse one or two more candidates than their seats, so ask early.

   Computer-based test

   Ninety minutes on 31 May 2026, in the Chandigarh tricity or Delhi NCR. Part I is a 40-mark aptitude section; Part II lets you attempt 40 of 100 subject questions.

   Qualifying score

   40 marks for general, OBC, sponsored and foreign candidates, 36 for SC and ST. Scorecards came out on 8 June 2026.

   Counselling with your guide

   Qualified candidates reported with their chief guide and original documents to Lecture Theatre-1 in Nehru Hospital on 29 June 2026.

On negative marking, the July 2026 prospectus is clear about the subject questions: section 11 deducts 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Part II. It is less clear about Part I. The exam summary lists a quarter-mark deduction for the whole 90-minute test, but section 11 describes the aptitude questions only as carrying one mark each. Answer the aptitude section as if the penalty applies there too.

For medical candidates, eligibility is MBBS, MDS or Master of Physiotherapy with 55%, or an M.D., M.S. or DNB in the subject. Others need a 60% master’s in a subject allied to medicine, from anatomy and biochemistry to pharmacy and human genomics. Social and behavioural candidates can come from psychology, social work, nursing, nutrition, public health, health economics, audiology or an LL.M. A master’s earned in distance mode does not qualify.

Who gets paid at PGIMER: PGI fellows, project staff or own-fellowship holders?

This is the question to settle before you apply, because the prospectus says admission is finalised only when you show evidence of a fellowship, grant or research funds through the head of department. There are five ways in:

• Own fellowship. If you already hold a stipend-bearing fellowship from a funding agency, you skip the test but still fill the online form and submit your papers 15 days before counselling. Our fellowships guide lists the national schemes.
• PGI fellowship. ₹31,000 a month, fixed, with a one-time thesis grant of ₹5,000 and no DA or CCA. The prospectus limits these to six or seven a session, and the July 2026 seat notice offered seven, given strictly in order of test merit.
• Research scheme employee. A faculty member funds you from an extramural project for the whole three to five years, and you can do the PhD only under that person. Project-funded candidates are not exempt from the test. If you qualify but find no project guide that session, your result stays valid for this category until the next session’s application deadline.
• In-service. For PGIMER staff with three years’ regular service, three original papers in PubMed, Medlar or Scopus journals, the head of department’s recommendation and age below 50. PGIMER’s own medical faculty skip the test; other staff do not.
• Deputed or sponsored. Central or state government departments, their autonomous bodies and government medical colleges may sponsor an employee with three years’ service, who must sit the test and serve the sponsor for five years afterwards. The sponsor pays; PGIMER does not. Private hospitals cannot sponsor.

A CSIR-UGC NET-LS, UGC-NET (social medicine and community health, or forensic science) or GATE score at the 95th percentile or above also exempts you, but only if you have joined a PGI faculty member’s extramural project by the application deadline. Fees are small: ₹500 registration, ₹350 tuition, ₹900 laboratory fee and ₹720 amalgamated fund each year, a ₹1,000 security deposit and ₹1,100 for the viva. The larger commitment is the bond. You sign two sureties, and if you leave midway you refund the fellowship paid in three instalments and forfeit your security. Leave is 30 days a year. What does Panjab University’s 2026 entrance involve for pharmacy and biomedical scholars?

Panjab University holds one PhD entrance a year. After registration deadlines were extended more than once, its revised schedule of 3 September 2026 fixed 27 September 2026 for the test, in Chandigarh only, and expected results by 30 November. The fee was ₹2,850 (₹1,425 for SC, ST and PwD). The 2026 prospectus sets two papers:

• Paper I: 50 multiple-choice questions in one hour, 25 on research methodology and 25 on your subject, with no negative marking.
• Paper II: two hours, five descriptive answers from eight questions of ten marks each, at least two from the research methodology part and two from the subject part.

Paper II is marked only if you score 40% in Paper I (35% for SC, ST, BC and PwD), and you need 50% overall. A PU entrance result stays valid for three years. NET (including JRF), GATE, GPAT, ICMR and ICAR qualifiers, direct fellowship awardees and regular PU teachers are exempt, and their applications are accepted all year and processed in four cycles closing on 31 January, 30 April, 31 July and 31 October.

For pharmacists, the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences listed 40 slots in 2026 across pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology and pharmacognosy, each combined with pharmaceutical analysis and quality assurance. You need an M.Pharm. in a listed branch, or a related master’s that the UIPS Academic Committee accepts as equivalent. The Faculty of Science also listed seats in biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, the National Centre for Human Genome Studies and Research, the Centre for Stem Cell Tissue Engineering and Biomedical Excellence, medical physics and nuclear medicine. One caution: the prospectus gives 70% weight to the Academic Performance Index and 30% to the interview in one place, and says selection rests solely on the interview in another. Ask the department which rule it follows. The prospectus mentions only “a few” university fellowships.

How does NIPER JEE lead to a PhD at NIPER Mohali?

NIPER Mohali houses the NIPER JEE Office, which ran the 2026 admission for all seven NIPERs: Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Hajipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mohali and Raebareli. According to the NIPER JEE 2026 PhD brochure, applications ran from 16 April to 23 May 2026 and the computer-based test was on 13 June 2026. PhD candidates choose a stream (chemical, biological or pharmaceutical sciences) and are interviewed in person at NIPER Mohali by one of four panels, the fourth being medical devices. The merit list weighs the test at 85% and the interview at 15%, and a public notice of 29 June 2026 set out the counselling that followed.

Eligibility is a qualifying degree with 60% or a CGPA of 6.75. Health-science graduates fit several disciplines: pharmacology and toxicology accepts an M.D. in pharmacology, pharmacy practice and clinical research takes M.Pharm. (pharmacy practice) and Pharm.D. holders, and medical devices is open to M.D. and MDS graduates. Holders of their own CSIR, DST, DBT or ICMR fellowship are exempt from NIPER JEE and deal with the NIPER directly. Institute fellowships last at most four years, continue only while you keep a CGPA of 6.50 each semester, and require eight hours a week of assistance to the institute.
