Which Ahmedabad institutes award a management PhD, and which award a fellowship instead?

The distinction matters more than people expect. IIM Ahmedabad, Nirma University and Gujarat University award PhDs. MICA and EDII are institutes, not universities, and award a Fellow Programme in Management; MICA’s own admission page calls its programme “PhD Equivalent”. If you plan to teach in a state university or a college that follows university rules, ask that employer how it treats a fellow programme before you commit four years to one.

My advice: if you can leave work and hold a strong CAT or GMAT, IIMA is the first application to prepare, and MICA is worth adding only if your research sits in marketing or communication. If you are employed in Ahmedabad and cannot move to full-time, Nirma’s 12 part-time seats are the ones to look at. EDII’s Fellow Programme, launched in 2014 and focused on entrepreneurship, still showed its 12th batch (2025) when we checked, so ask the institute whether a 2026 or 2027 batch is running.

Which test does IIM Ahmedabad accept in place of CAT for your specialisation?

IIMA’s doctoral admission page lists eleven specialisations, including three that most business schools do not offer: Food and Agribusiness (housed in the Centre for Management in Agriculture), Innovation and Management in Education (the Ravi J. Matthai Centre for Educational Innovation) and Public Systems. You may apply to at most two. CAT works for all of them, and GRE or GMAT from a test centre works too; take-home GRE and GMAT scores are refused. Beyond that the list varies:

• Finance and Accounting, Strategy: CAT, GRE or GMAT only.
• Human Resource Management, Information Systems: GATE is also accepted.
• Marketing, Organizational Behavior: UGC-NET JRF in named subjects (for Marketing these include Commerce, Management and Tourism Administration; for OB they include Labour Welfare, Psychology and Social Work).
• Food and Agribusiness: GATE in Geomatics Engineering, JRF in Economics or Geography, or an ICAR-SRF in disciplines such as Agricultural Economics or Food Technology.
• Operations and Decision Sciences: GATE, or JRF in Mathematical Sciences through CSIR-UGC NET.

A CAT, GRE or GMAT score counts for five years, GATE and JRF for three, and an SRF for one, counted to the application deadline. You need a master’s or two-year PG diploma with 55%, or a CA, CS or CMA pass with 50% alongside a bachelor’s at 55%, or a four-year bachelor’s with 65% (5 points less for reserved categories). Shortlisting uses the test score, academic record and experience, followed by interviews.

What does IIM Ahmedabad pay, and must you live in the city?

From 1 June 2026, IIMA covers tuition, computer, library, medical insurance, placement and alumni fees, and pays a monthly subsistence allowance of ₹48,000 through the first two years of coursework, ₹52,000 after the Area Comprehensive Examination (ACE), and ₹58,000 after the thesis proposal is defended, until the end of the fifth year or the thesis defence. Beyond the allowance, IIMA offers:

• ₹35,000 each year as a contingency allowance, paid for five years at most;
• up to ₹5,75,000 for presenting papers at conferences, and up to ₹2,00,000 for fieldwork and data collection;
• a ₹1,00,000 start-up grant for computing equipment;
• house rent allowance of ₹18,000 a month (₹24,000 with family) if you live off campus in Ahmedabad, available only after the Comprehensive Examination and up to the fifth year.

IIMA describes the programme as full-time, needing “significant on-campus/local living”, and its academics menu lists no executive or part-time doctorate. Coursework takes two years and includes a pre-dissertation research project and a mini dissertation; students take four to five years on average. Single students get campus housing early on, while family housing on campus is limited.

For the 2027 intake the online form opened on 8 September 2026, IIMA set 18 January 2027 (5 pm) as the closing date, the fee was ₹500 (₹250 for reserved categories), and interviews were expected in March and April 2027. The page also said a revised version would be uploaded, so check it again before you pay.

How does MICA select Fellow Programme scholars in marketing and communication?

The MICA FPM is narrow by design: research in strategic marketing and communication, covering consumer behaviour, advertising and media, consumer culture, digital platforms and AI, media economics, and sustainability communication. Cohorts are typically five to eight people, and MICA says 42 fellows have completed the programme since it began in 2010.

Everyone takes MICAT, the institute’s own test (psychometric, descriptive and aptitude sections), with an application fee of ₹2,500 on the 2027 admissions page. Then come an online screening interview and, on the Shela campus, an FPM written test, an individual presentation and a personal interview. You need a master’s with 60% in management, communications, humanities or social sciences, two letters of recommendation, a two-page statement of purpose, and a research proposal no longer than 1,000 words naming three MICA faculty whose work fits yours. Coursework is 53 credits in research methods, theory building and consumer culture theory, followed by conference presentations, a publication requirement and a three-month research immersion at a partner university abroad. Tuition is waived, but MICA’s two official pages give different stipends. The 2027 admissions page lists ₹38,000 monthly for the first two years, then ₹41,000, while the programme page gives ₹45,500 to ₹48,500 a month, plus a research contingency grant of ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 a year. Confirm the figure for your batch with MICA’s admissions office before you resign from a job. The programme is full-time but non-residential.

How do Nirma University and Gujarat University admit management scholars?

Nirma University. Management is the one faculty with its own full-time PhD regulations. Selected scholars spend the first year on MBA courses worth 32 credit hours, taught and graded as in the MBA, and must reach a CGPA of 6.00 before formal registration; the 2026 coursework note adds five PhD courses (16 credits) in the second year and puts the average duration at four years. Admission is by a university entrance test, half research methodology and half subject, with 50% to qualify, then a presentation to the Departmental Research Committee, weighted 70:30. NET, GATE and similar holders skip the test, and NET category 1 candidates get full marks for it.

The 2026–27 seat list gave management 19 full-time seats (six in Finance and Accounting, four in Economics) and 12 part-time. The university’s 2026–27 fee sheet charges full-time scholars ₹40,000 a year in tuition, plus one-time fees of ₹27,200 (₹20,000 of it the viva-voce fee, paid when the thesis goes in) and a ₹15,000 refundable deposit. Part-timers pay ₹50,000 a year, one-time fees of ₹37,200 including a ₹15,000 coursework fee, and a ₹30,000 deposit. One point to clear up before accepting: the management regulations exclude the Faculty of Management from the clause that gives other full-time scholars a JRF and SRF, and we found no published stipend for management scholars. For 2026 the part-time management test was held on 31 July, with a second sitting on 18 August for those who missed it.

Gujarat University. Its management PhD sits in the B.K. School of Professional and Management Studies and requires an MBA, according to the 2026–27 eligibility list; M.Com. holders go to the School of Commerce, where the qualifying subjects include management and strategic and general management. The vacancy sheet showed 11 Management, 19 Commerce and 56 Accountancy seats out of 744, with a note that seat numbers could still change under the university’s 2026 PhD rules. The 2026–27 schedule ran registration on the Samarth portal from 25 August to 8 September 2026 (fee ₹1,000), published eligible and exempt lists on 19 September and held the entrance test on 26 September 2026, with a separate list of candidates exempted from the test.
