Which of IIM Kozhikode’s three doctoral tracks fits your situation?

From 2026–27 IIM Kozhikode admits to three programmes through one application: the full-time DPM, a new DPM (Teaching Track) whose first batch began that year, and the DPM (Practice Track), which reached its eighth batch. All three are offered in the same eight Areas, from Decision Sciences and Operations Management to Humanities and Liberal Arts in Management, and the institute’s doctoral FAQ says the degree certificate names the track you completed.

You may apply to all three at once, but you pick one Area and it applies to every track you choose. A non-reserved applicant ticking all three paid ₹7,000 in fees for the 2026–27 intake. If you are a college teacher in Kerala with five or six years of service, the Teaching Track is the one to read closely. If you have run a business unit for two decades, the Practice Track is written for you; in Strategic Management it asks for fifteen years, and prefers people who have headed a company, business unit or large division.

The full-time DPM has the strictest test rule. The 2026–27 admission notification wanted a score no older than three years, and the accepted tests change by Area: UGC-NET in any of its three result categories was enough for Economics, Marketing or Operations, but Finance, Strategy and OB-HR accepted only UGC-JRF, and Finance only in Management, Economics or Commerce. Home-based GRE and online GMAT scores were refused. Graduates of any IIM’s two-year PGDM or MBA with a CGPA of at least 2.67 out of 4.33 skipped the test.

How does IIM Kozhikode rank doctoral applicants?

Through three stages, set out in the Admission Policy 2026–27. After screening comes a 30-minute handwritten essay, the Written Ability Test (WAT), and on the same day a face-to-face Doctoral Orientation Conversation (DOC) with two faculty members. For the 2026–27 intake these were held at six centres: New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Kozhikode. The DOC score out of 50 decides who moves on, with cut-offs of 25 for general candidates, 22.5 for NC-OBC and EWS, and 20 for SC, ST and PwD. The last stage, the Doctoral Area Conversation (DAC), is an online discussion with two faculty from your Area.

The final score mixes these with your past record, and the weights surprise many applicants:

• DPM: Class X 15%, Class XII 15%, graduation or post-graduation 20%, WAT 10%, DAC 40%.
• Teaching Track: 10%, 10% and 15% for the three academic levels, 15% for experience, 10% WAT, 40% DAC.
• Practice Track: 10% for each academic level, 20% for experience, 10% WAT, 40% DAC.

Two practical points follow. A weak Class X result costs you real marks in the full-time DPM, and nothing at interview can win them back, so weigh that before paying. And experience is not scored as “more is better”. The Teaching Track gives full marks for five to seven years and fewer after that, while the Practice Track peaks at 18 to 22 years outside Strategic Management.

For the 2026–27 intake, applications ran from 24 November 2025 to 23 January 2026, Stage 2 ran from 6 February to 28 March, offers went out in the first week of April and registration was in the second week of June. A final-year student admitted provisionally had to show the passed degree by 31 December 2026, or lose the seat and repay the fellowship already received.

What do the Teaching and Practice Tracks cost, and how much campus time do they need?

The two official figures for the Practice Track differ. The admission policy and the FAQ give ₹9,50,000 for the standard duration and add that a revised fee is under consideration, while the institute’s fellowship and fee page already states ₹12,50,000. Ask the doctoral office which figure applies to your batch before you resign from anything or sign a loan. The Teaching Track fee is ₹5,00,000 in both places. Neither track pays a fellowship, and extensions beyond the standard period carry a re-registration fee.

The academic calendar for both tracks, applicable from 2026–27, shows how the time is spent. Semester 0 is an online foundations module of 45 to 60 hours (1 May to 10 June in 2026). Semester 1 opens with an in-campus module of 9 to 10 days, and Semester 2 with a further week on campus; the calendar says you must be physically present for these. Coursework is 12 credits a semester in each track, and one credit is ten classroom hours. All tracks require at least three years in the programme before you submit a draft thesis, and the institute says five years is typical.

Plan leave for those two blocks in the first year. The rest of the coursework is blended, which is why a teacher in Thrissur or a manager in Kochi can attempt it.

Can you do a management PhD at NIT Calicut without GATE or NET?

Yes. The information brochure for the July 2026 session states twice that a NET or GATE score is not mandatory for a PhD in Management Studies. Full-time applicants sit NIT Calicut’s national-level PhD entrance examination, held on its own campus, and then an interview; JRF holders are judged on a test or interview by the department. You need 60% (CGPA 6.0) in both your bachelor’s and your master’s, and the master’s must be in business administration, M.Com., M.Tech. in industrial engineering, data science, mathematics, statistics, MCA, economics, sociology, anthropology or healthcare administration. Both degrees must have been taken in regular full-time or part-time mode, so a distance MBA does not qualify.

The institute runs six admission schemes and admits twice a year, in July and December. Scheme I carries an institute fellowship of ₹37,000 monthly (the JRF rate), upgraded to the SRF rate of ₹42,000, for up to five years, in return for teaching-assistant duties; the brochure mentions no HRA or contingency grant alongside it. Scheme II is full-time and self-sponsored, and Scheme V is external registration for employed candidates with an NOC and at least a year’s experience, with no residential requirement. Scheme I and II together have 300 seats a year across the whole institute.

Fees for July 2026 were ₹89,600 at admission for fellowship scholars (tuition of ₹7,500 a semester, waived for SC and ST), and ₹1,17,100 at admission for self-sponsored, sponsored and external scholars, whose tuition is ₹35,000 a semester. A ₹25,000 thesis evaluation fee falls due at fifth-semester registration. The Management interviews were on 12 June 2026, and NIT Calicut announced its July 2026 selections on 18 June.

Where does the University of Calicut fit for a commerce or management PhD?

It is the route most Malabar college teachers take, and it is organised around Commerce. The university’s PhD notification of 15 December 2025 listed vacancies by discipline and district, and it had no Management discipline at all. In Kozhikode district the Commerce list held eight vacancies with four guides: at St Joseph’s College, Devagiri, Government College Madappally, Government College Kodenchery and Farook College. The Department of Commerce and Management Studies (DCMS) itself is at Thenhipalam, in Malappuram district, about 25 km south of the city.

Admission follows the university’s entrance test and interview, weighted 70:30, with a pass mark of 50% in the test (45% for SEBC and differently abled candidates, 40% for SC and ST). NET holders in categories 2 and 3 have their NET marks weighted at 70% against 30% for the interview, and JRF holders by interview alone. The 2025 cycle opened on 15 December, with the test planned for February 2026. Permanent teachers in government and aided colleges are exempt from the test and can register at any time a guide has a place. The DCMS notice of 29 June 2026 offered one such “any time” seat in Commerce, restricted to permanent teachers of aided colleges affiliated to Calicut.
