Is IIM Lucknow the only Lucknow route that pays a management PhD scholar?

Money is where the routes separate most sharply. IIM Lucknow pays you. The University of Lucknow and BBAU charge modest fees to full-time scholars, and their 2026 documents promise no stipend of their own, so plan on a JRF or another award. AKTU’s own 2025–26 guide says management candidates are admitted in non-fellowship mode only. And the two part-time routes that cater to employed people, IIM Lucknow’s EFPM and BBAU’s part-time seats, are expensive.

A working manager in Gomti Nagar or Hazratganj should price the EFPM against the University of Lucknow’s part-time category before deciding. The IIM brand costs roughly ₹7.5 lakh; a Lucknow University part-time PhD costs ₹52,580 a year if your employer gives you an NOC. What you give up is the structured coursework and the IIM supervisor pool.

What IIM Lucknow pays

At ₹35,000 rising to ₹40,000 a month, the stipend sits below the ₹48,000 that IIM Ahmedabad began paying in June 2026, but free housing, family accommodation included, narrows the gap for a married scholar. The PhD is full-time and residential, and resident Indian scholars receive, according to the institute’s page:

• a stipend of ₹35,000 monthly through the second year, rising to ₹40,000 once the comprehensive examination at the end of year two is cleared, for up to four and a half years;
• contingency money of ₹10,000 annually for the first two years and ₹15,000 annually for years three and four;
• a one-time ₹50,000 computer grant, usable before coursework ends;
• ₹1,40,000 to ₹1,60,000 in combined travel and registration grants depending on CGPA, plus ₹10,000 for a doctoral consortium;
• up to ₹50,000 for case-writing and field research in years three and four;
• exemption from fees, and free semi-furnished hostel rooms, with family accommodation for married scholars and reimbursement of a family health-insurance premium.

The page lists no HRA; housing is provided on campus instead.

Year one is common coursework, followed by a two-month summer research assignment or internship; year two is area coursework and a 2-credit dissertation, ending in the comprehensive examination. Which IIM Lucknow rules on school marks, score dates and age rule applicants out?

Three rules on the IIM Lucknow PhD page rule out people who would qualify elsewhere.

• School marks. Every applicant needs at least 55% in all public examinations from Class X onwards, as well as a 55% master’s (50% for SC and ST), a 75% engineering or four-year degree, or CA, ICWA or CS with 55% and a B.Com.
• Short score validity. For the 2026 intake only CAT, GATE, GRE, GMAT or UGC, CSIR or ICAR JRF/SRF results obtained on or after 1 January 2024 counted, a window of two years, shorter than several other IIMs allow.
• Age. Applicants could not be over 55 on 30 June 2026.

Graduates of a full-time IIM PGDM with a CGPA of at least 6 on 10, or of IIM Lucknow’s PGP-WE, can apply on that basis and skip the first year of coursework, finishing in about three and a half years instead of four and a half. The programme has eleven areas, including three you rarely see at other IIMs: Agri-Business Management, Business Sustainability and Communication. You may name two in order of preference, and cannot change area after admission.

For the 2026 intake, applications closed on 16 February 2026, interviews were held on 6 and 7 April, and the programme began in June. The application fee was ₹1,000 (₹500 for SC and ST).

What do the EFPM’s Noida weekends and 21-day campus visits involve?

The EFPM is IIM Lucknow’s part-time, non-residential doctoral programme for executives, faculty members and researchers, and much of it is taught at the Noida campus. Year one is taught with the Post Graduate Programme for Working Executives on alternate weekends at Noida. Year two needs three campus visits of 21 days each, at Noida or Lucknow. After that come the comprehensive examination, the thesis proposal and the defence, with only short visits. The institute puts the average age of its EFPM scholars at 42, within a range of 31 to 55.

For the 2026–27 intake you needed seven years of full-time work experience by 31 March 2026, current employment, and an age of no more than 55. The academic floor was 55% in Class X and XII, and 50% in a non-engineering degree with 55% in a two-year master’s (or 65% in engineering). You could qualify with CAT (2023 or 2024), GATE (2024 or 2025), a centre-based GMAT or GRE, a JRF/SRF, or IIML’s own two-hour entrance exam, held at Noida on 1 February 2026 with verbal, data-interpretation and quantitative sections. The tentative schedule closed applications on 20 January 2026 and set interviews for 26 to 28 February. A two-year MBA with a CGPA of 6 from an NIRF top-15 management institution, or from an AMBA, AACSB or EQUIS accredited school, could earn exemption from year one.

The fee was ₹50,000 on acceptance, ₹2,00,000 in the first April and ₹1,25,000 in each of the next four years: ₹7,50,000 in all, or ₹5,00,000 for exempted candidates. The page gives two durations: five years ordinarily (four with exemption) with extension to seven, but also a FAQ answer of four years and a maximum of six. Lucknow University, BBAU or AKTU: which suits a NET holder or a part-timer?

University of Lucknow. Its 2026–27 notice and guidelines opened applications on 27 May 2026 (application fee ₹2,000; SC, ST and PwD applicants paid half), under the university’s PhD Ordinance 2026; the guidelines say admissions are advertised twice a year, in May and December. Seats are filled in three phases: JRF holders by interview, then NET holders by interview, then the rest through the Research Entrance Test (RET), weighted 70% test and 30% interview, with a 50% pass mark in the RET (45% for reserved categories). Full-timers must complete three years’ residence and cannot take paid work beyond a fellowship or assistantship. Part-time is open to employees with an NOC, at ₹52,580 a year, and to “outstanding working professionals” from non-government organisations, at ₹1,52,830 a year. The seat list of 7 September 2026 gave Management Studies 87 full-time and 59 part-time seats, and Commerce 68 and 15. JRF interviews were scheduled for 16 to 19 September and NET interviews for 24 to 26 September 2026.

BBAU. The central university’s 2026 PhD prospectus offered 12 management seats at the main campus, four of them part-time. JRF holders are admitted on interview; for NET categories 2 and 3 and entrance candidates, the test score counts 70% and the interview 30%, with candidates called at five per seat. Regular tuition is ₹4,400 a semester (₹2,200 for SC, ST and PwD). Part-time scholars pay ₹75,000 a semester plus a ₹50,000 admission fee, so price it carefully. Registration was extended to 7 September 2026 with a late fee, and a separate part-time registration ran on 16 and 17 September 2026.

AKTU. AKTU’s 2025–26 PhD guide lets management applicants with a valid GMAT, CAT, CMAT or NET score go straight to interview (Category A); everyone else sits a two-hour, 100-question test, half research methodology, and is ranked 70:30 with the interview. The eligibility table asks for an MBA with first division. Its Homi Bhabha teaching-assistant fellowship excludes management. For 2026–27 the Phase I test was held on 25 August 2026, and AKTU’s notice of 17 September 2026 set interviews at its Lucknow campus from 24 September onwards.
