Which rulebook governs a thesis written in Mumbai?

The rulebook of whoever awards the degree. That isn’t always the campus you work on. A scholar in a Kalina lab or at an affiliated college in Thane is registered with the University of Mumbai. One at Juhu is with SNDT. ICT, TISS and NMIMS are deemed universities with their own ordinances, and IIT Bombay sets its own rules. The table compares them.

Read the gaps as carefully as the rules. The University of Mumbai leaves typography to the research centre. So the format sheet your department hands out is the working rule. ICT’s rules say that anything they don’t specify is left to you and your guide, and that reasonable solutions will be accepted. SNDT and ICT, by contrast, leave very little to chance.

What does the University of Mumbai’s 2026 rulebook expect of the writing itself?

Content, not layout. R.PhD.18(1) of the Regulations for Ph.D. calls the thesis a carefully drafted and rigorously checked document. It then lists four things the thesis must show. The first is a thorough grasp of the subject and the methods used. The second is an original approach with new observations. Then come findings that are properly interpreted, and research communicated in a professional, contemporary way. Those four lines make a fair checklist for any chapter review. They’re the ones we read against.

Several other clauses change how you plan the final year:

• The pre-synopsis presentation. Under R.PhD.15(7) you present before the RAC, with experts invited from inside and outside your research centre. The synopsis then goes in within one month, and not later than two. Treat the draft you show that panel as close to final. Our pre-submission seminar guide covers what such panels ask.
• The synopsis fixes the thesis. The RRC can ask for a fresh synopsis if the title or content has moved far from the approved proposal. That’s R.PhD.16(4). A title change needs an application at least six months before the synopsis (R.PhD.11(8)).
• Published papers become chapters. R.PhD.17(4) says the papers you publish must be an integral part of the thesis, and R.PhD.19(6) binds copies at the end. Write those chapters so that they extend the papers rather than paste them in.
• Joint work is declared. Where a chapter reports collaborative work, R.PhD.18(2) asks you to state which portion is your own.
• Language. English, unless your subject is a language or the RRC has allowed a Modern Indian language. Even then, one-tenth of the main contents must still be in English (R.PhD.19(8)).

How strict is SNDT Women’s University about format, length and language?

Strict, and in writing. SNDT issued its guidelines for preparation and submission of the PhD thesis as amendments to Annexure IX of its regulations. They set out the page before you write a word of it:

• A4 paper, printed on one side, in Times New Roman 12 or Arial 10. Double spacing for the abstract and text, and single spacing for long tables, block quotations, footnotes and references.
• At least 4 cm at the top and left and 2.5 cm on the right and bottom. Page numbers are centred at the foot, and preliminary pages are in lower-case Roman from the declaration page.
• A thesis of preferably no more than 250 printed pages, a synopsis of no more than 40 pages including references, and a one-page abstract.
• Chapters running Introduction, Literature Review, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Summary and Conclusion.
• References in a Harvard-like author-year style, preferably no more than 200 of them.
• A list of publications from the PhD in the annexure, with up to two accepted manuscripts that form part of the thesis.

One line stands out. The guidelines encourage writers who aren’t fluent in English to have the manuscript professionally edited before submission. That’s exactly the kind of language review we do, on your text.

The PhD regulations of 2022 add the language rule. You may write in English, Marathi, Gujarati or Hindi, if your supervisor knows the chosen medium. A thesis in any language other than English must be typed in Unicode (18.1). We review English text only. So a Marathi or Hindi thesis needs its language checked by someone in your department. Note one inconsistency before you print. The regulations speak of three soft-bound copies, while the thesis guidelines say three hardbound copies. Ask the Head of your department which the Examination section expects.

What do ICT, IIT Bombay, TISS and NMIMS add before the thesis goes in?

ICT. The ICT University Doctor of Philosophy Rules 2015 (Ordinance O.38) make you present a colloquium, open to all, at least two months before the synopsis. The colloquium’s suggestions then have to be worked into the draft. The thesis follows two to six months after the synopsis. The Dean (Academic Programmes) can grant a three-month extension, and registration ends automatically if nothing arrives within 18 months. The format annexure has views on chapters too. It suggests they run from Introduction and Objectives, through the work on each objective, to Conclusions and Recommendations. References may sit at the end of each chapter, so that chapters read as self-contained papers. The abstract is capped at 350 words, chemists are pointed to the ACS style guide, and a dedication is barred.

IIT Bombay. Submission is online. The Mechanical Engineering department’s guidelines list three PDF files named by roll number: the thesis, the synopsis, and a single file of forms. The forms file holds the thesis submission form, the examiners’ email confirmations, the pre-synopsis examination report and the qualifying degree certificate. It also holds the summary of the similarity index report, which you get from the library. Bound inside the thesis is the revised Specimen C, the institute’s academic honesty and integrity declaration.

TISS. The institute’s page for research scholars links the Manual of Style by Prof. N. Jayaram. He retired from TISS and now visits NLSIU Bengaluru. The edition it links is the eighth, of 2019. It asks for A4 paper, with an inch and a half free on the left and one inch elsewhere. The text is 12-point Times New Roman with one-and-a-half line spacing. Chapter titles are in 16 point, and block quotations in 10 point single-spaced. It recommends author-date referencing and three heading levels, none of them underlined. The 2012 TISS edition set the text at 11 point. So if a senior’s thesis looks different, that’s probably why. Ask your centre which edition it follows.

NMIMS. At the School of Business Management, the operating procedures allow submission any time after two years from registration, once the RAC approves it. The synopsis and thesis must then follow within three months. Six months is the ceiling, even with the Vice-Chancellor’s extension. The thesis PDF is submitted chapter by chapter, which suits a chapter-by-chapter review.
