Part-time PhD in Mumbai

Which Mumbai institutions let you keep your job during a PhD, how much leave each takes, and which employer letter it wants.

Last reviewed · 8 min read

The University of Mumbai’s PhD regulations, in force since January 2026, create no part-time category and have attendance at coursework and committee meetings recorded in person, so the routes built for people in jobs lie elsewhere in the city: IIT Bombay’s External and College Teacher categories, ICT Mumbai’s routes for teachers, laboratory staff and sponsored industry employees, VJTI’s part-time sponsored category, and the part-time mode at NMIMS and SNDT Women’s University.

Part-time registration on an employer’s No Objection Certificate is a national rule from the UGC 2022 regulations, explained in our national admission guide. Last reviewed September 2026.

Which Mumbai institutions let you register for a PhD while employed?

Six, and each decides eligibility by who employs you rather than by how many hours you can spare.

Routes for employed PhD scholars in Mumbai, from each institution’s 2026–27 brochure, manual or regulations
InstitutionWhat it calls the routeWho can use itTime you must give the institution
IIT Bombay, PowaiExternal (EX)Staff of R&D organisations, laboratories and research-based industryRelease for coursework in the first one to two semesters
IIT Bombay, PowaiCollege Teacher (CT)College and university faculty without study leaveThe same release, then weekends and vacations with the supervisor
ICT, MatungaTeacher; national laboratory or government institution; industry-sponsored in-houseTeachers, permanent lab and government staff, employees of ICT-recognised industry R&D unitsAn approved timetable; teachers spend three months a year in ICT labs
VJTI, MatungaPart-time sponsoredSponsored employees and VJTI staffTwo semesters in residence, then two working days a month
NMIMS and SNDT Women’s UniversityPart-timeAnyone with the employer’s NOC; SNDT admits women onlyCoursework attendance
University of Mumbai research centresNo separate part-time categoryAny admitted scholarPhysical attendance at coursework and meetings

NMIMS and SNDT copy the UGC wording almost exactly (clause 12 of each), so their limits come from each school’s coursework timetable. SNDT’s PhD centres are on its Churchgate, Juhu and Pune campuses and at recognised institutes.

Managers should also read about IIM Mumbai’s Executive PhD, covered with the other management PhDs in Mumbai, and social scientists about the two part-time seats at IIPS in our social-science PhD in Mumbai guide.

If you register at a University of Mumbai research centre, the thesis rules that apply at the end are in our University of Mumbai thesis format guide.

Each institution prints its own format for the employer’s letter, and a generic HR “no objection” letter fits none of them. Hand HR the right annexure:

  • IIT Bombay, External: the Sponsorship Certificate in Appendix C.3 of the 2026–27 brochure, promising to release you for coursework and naming the facilities you will use, then a Relieving Certificate on joining.
  • IIT Bombay, College Teacher: the No-Objection Certificate in Appendix C.4, signed by your college or university.
  • ICT: the NOC in Annexure 1 of the Information Manual, the affidavit for your category (Annexures 2 to 4), and a bond approved by ICT’s Vice Chancellor.
  • VJTI: the NOC in Annexure III with the application and the sponsorship letter in Annexure II, both on letterhead.
  • NMIMS and SNDT: a letter confirming, in the UGC’s three points, that part-time study is permitted, that your official work allows enough hours for research, and that you will be released when coursework demands it.

Coursework content and the research methodology paper are explained in our coursework and RPE guide.

How long must your employer release you for an IIT Bombay external PhD?

For the whole of your coursework, which the 2026–27 PhD brochure (section A.6.11) says you finish immediately after joining, within one to two semesters, with a third if your background or the department demands it. You register for the PhD only after that, and at joining you hand in a Relieving Certificate from your employer. So an external PhD at Powai begins with one to two semesters (sometimes three) away from your desk, not with evening classes.

The research then happens at your organisation under an internal supervisor from IIT Bombay and an external one from your employer, who meet at least once a year. You may submit the thesis three years after registration (two for other scholars). Three more details matter:

  • The employer has to fit the definition. EX is written for recognised R&D organisations, well-equipped scientific institutions, laboratories and industrial firms engaged in research. A sales or back-office role will be hard to argue.
  • Experience can stand in for GATE. For applicants with a master’s in science, arts or commerce, or a four-year bachelor’s, two years of professional experience after the qualifying degree satisfies the general eligibility rule in section A.5.1(e).
  • No assistantship. Under a Ministry of Education rule, anyone on an organisation’s rolls cannot be admitted in the Teaching Assistantship category.

If you teach in a college

The College Teacher (CT) category is for faculty who keep teaching without study leave. The coursework release is the same, but IIT Bombay counts as your place of research even if part of the work happens at your college, and you must be available to your internal supervisor during weekends, holidays and vacations. CT scholars pay self-financed fees. For the session starting in January 2027, the advertisement set the application window as 16 September to 17 October 2026 (21 October with a late fee).

Which ICT Mumbai category fits a teacher, a government scientist or an industry chemist?

ICT’s Information Manual for 2026–27 (section 3.3) runs three routes beside its regular PhD, all through the ICT entrance test and full coursework.

Teachers. You need two years of full-time teaching in a degree college, or five in a junior college, diploma college or polytechnic. Your management signs a bond promising to release you, and if your college is in or near the city you may use ICT laboratories during vacations, holidays and after office hours, keeping a signed log book. You get five years, extendable by one, if you put in at least three months of full-time work a year in ICT labs, and characterisation and other advanced analysis must be done at ICT. You must also publish or patent part of the work within two years of registration, or the registration lapses.

National laboratories and government institutions. Permanent staff with two years of service qualify, with an NOC, an approved timetable and the same bond and log-book rules.

Industry-sponsored in-house. Here the conditions sit mostly on the company:

  • you have two years of industrial experience after your master’s, with a CGPA above 7;
  • the company runs an R&D and quality-control laboratory with at least one PhD employee in the relevant area;
  • a committee chaired by ICT’s Dean (RCRM) inspects and recognises that laboratory, at the company’s cost, unless it is already DSIR-recognised;
  • the company pays ₹5 lakh for the first four years plus ₹50,000 per candidate per year as contingency, then ₹1 lakh a year to renew recognition;
  • it may nominate up to two employees a year, who pay all PhD fees and receive no fellowship. Your ICT entrance score stays valid for two years.

If your employer balks at ₹5 lakh, the alternatives are IIT Bombay’s External category or a University of Mumbai research centre.

Is VJTI’s part-time sponsored PhD workable alongside a full-time job?

For the first year, only with leave. The VJTI brochure for 2026–27 requires part-time sponsored scholars to complete at least two semesters of residence at the Matunga campus, and its sponsorship letter has your employer relieve you for the first year to finish coursework (12 credits after a master’s, 24 after a bachelor’s), then let you report to your supervisor at least two working days a month.

The part-time minimum is four years (three for full-time), with the same six-year maximum. Part-time fees are higher: ₹75,051 in the first year and ₹72,350 in the second to fourth years, against ₹54,551 and ₹51,850 for full-time. Sponsored candidates cannot take VJTI assistantships, and the category cannot be switched between full-time and part-time at admission.

Seats follow supervisor vacancies: the 2026–27 brochure listed 44 in Mechanical and 31 in Civil, but only six in Electrical. Applications ran from 17 August to 6 September 2026, with selection by interview for candidates qualified through UGC-NET, SET, CSIR-NET, GATE, CEED and similar national tests.

Can you keep a job during a University of Mumbai PhD under the 2026 regulations?

The Regulations for Ph.D. issued by the university’s RAPC in January 2026 never mention part-time study outside the definitions, and three clauses make a desk job harder than it looks:

  • Residence. R.PhD.15(1) says you shall “preferably” reside within the university’s territorial jurisdiction from admission to thesis submission, and then calls this “a mandatory requirement”. The jurisdiction is wide (the 2026–27 fee circular went to sub-campuses in Thane, Kalyan, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg), but ask your research centre how it reads the clause if you live outside it.
  • Physical attendance. The same clause says attendance at coursework, RAC meetings and meetings with your supervisor is recorded physically. Coursework is at least 12 credits (180 hours), and R.PhD.13(7) makes attendance, “preferably 90%”, mandatory. Up to 40% of the credits may come from Swayam courses if your RAC agrees.
  • Six-monthly RAC presentations. R.PhD.10(6) requires you to appear before the RAC once every six months, and missing presentations for two years can lead to cancellation.

How this plays out depends on the department. The Department of Law ran its 2026–27 pre-PhD course on Fridays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. from 27 August 2026, with biometric attendance and a notice citing Ordinance 6086 for a 75% attendance requirement. One Friday afternoon a week is manageable for most employers, but it is the department’s timetable, not the regulations, that makes it so.

Two clauses help people in industry. R.PhD.15(3) lets your RAC approve up to six months (extendable to a year) of work in an industrial R&D laboratory or another institute, and R.PhD.29 allows a co-supervisor from outside, with an NOC from that person’s organisation. Your main supervisor must still be full-time regular faculty at a recognised research centre (R.PhD.33). The 2026–27 fee structure for a Humanities PhD totals ₹23,091, including ₹800 in refundable deposits.

FAQ

Questions scholars ask

What does it cost my company to sponsor me at ICT?

Under the 2026–27 Information Manual, ₹5 lakh for the first four years plus ₹50,000 a year per candidate as contingency, then ₹1 lakh a year to keep the laboratory’s recognition. The company may nominate up to two employees a year. You pay the PhD fees yourself and get no fellowship.

Must I live inside the University of Mumbai’s jurisdiction?

R.PhD.15(1) says you should “preferably” live within it from admission to submission, then calls this a mandatory requirement. The jurisdiction reaches well beyond the city: the 2026–27 fee circular went to sub-campuses in Thane, Kalyan, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. If you live outside it, ask your research centre in writing how it applies the clause.

Can a University of Mumbai scholar spend time in a company laboratory?

Yes, with approval. R.PhD.15(3) lets your RAC allow up to six months, extendable to a year, in an industrial R&D laboratory or another institute, and R.PhD.29 allows a co-supervisor from outside the university with an NOC from that person’s organisation.

How soon can an IIT Bombay external scholar submit the thesis?

Three years after registration, against two for other scholars (section A.11 of the 2026–27 brochure). Registration itself comes only after the coursework, which takes one to two semesters of release from your employer, occasionally three.
