Scopus publication support in Hyderabad

How many papers do Osmania, JNTUH, UoH, IIT Hyderabad and MANUU want before the thesis?

Anywhere from one to four. And the authorship conditions matter as much as the index does. Each row below comes from the university’s own regulation or submission form.

Two more details are easy to miss. MANUU’s 2023 regulations say the one paper comes “apart from fulfilling the other mandatory UGC requirements”. So ask your department whether it expects anything more. Then there’s IIT Hyderabad. Its open colloquium request form has you count Scopus journal papers and Scopus conference papers separately. Why does Osmania’s move to Scopus and Web of Science only change plans for 2026 submissions?

Clause 24 of the 2024-25 Osmania rules accepted journals listed in Scopus, Web of Science or UGC-CARE. Clause 25 of the 2026-27 rules drops UGC-CARE. That hurts if you planned to submit this year with two CARE papers, since you may now need a third paper, in an indexed journal. And nothing in the 2026-27 rules says which batches are covered. So before you choose the next journal, ask the Dean’s office which version applies to you.

The clause has three other conditions:

• Joint with your supervisor. Both of you must be authors. The clause doesn’t rule out other co-authors, but a paper without your supervisor on it doesn’t meet it.
• The reprint in original. The rules ask for evidence “in the form of the reprint in original”. Clause 27.8 wants the reprints enclosed in the thesis. Keep the publisher’s final PDF and any printed offprint. An author manuscript from a repository may not satisfy the office.
• Before adjudication. The papers must be published, with reprints as evidence, before the thesis is submitted for evaluation. An acceptance letter alone is unlikely to be enough.

What do JNTUH’s author-order and affiliation rules mean for a paper written with your guide?

They mean your name goes first. Section 9.1 of JNTUH’s 2021-22 doctoral regulations is the strictest in the city on authorship. You come first, then your supervisor and co-supervisor, and the regulations call that order mandatory. The affiliation must be JNTUH. Special cases go to the Vice-Chancellor through the Directorate of R&D, and its decision is final. There’s one other route: one paper plus a recognised patent that’s relevant to the thesis.

Look at three lines before a manuscript leaves your hands. Is the author order right? Does your affiliation say JNTUH research scholar, as well as any employer? Is your supervisor’s name spelled as it is on the JNTUH record? None of these can be fixed once the paper is out.

Next comes the thesis submission application. It wants a list of every journal paper since your admission date, signed by you, your supervisor and your co-supervisor. For each paper you give the title, authors, journal, year, volume, pages, impact factor and citation index. At least two of the papers must be enclosed. Conference papers go on a separate list. Papers from before your registration won’t help here.

At JNTUH, papers count even before you’re admitted. The 2026-27 information for full-time PhD candidates sets aside 10 of the 50 interview marks for publications in your branch. How do the University of Hyderabad and IIT Hyderabad treat published papers that become thesis chapters?

University of Hyderabad. Your supervisor signs a thesis certificate. It names each paper, its ISSN and the chapter built on it, plus any conference talks, national or international. Then, at the plagiarism stage, author position matters. The rules printed in the 2026-27 prospectus treat the two cases differently. Text you share with a paper you led as first author is left out of your similarity figure. If someone else led the paper, your supervisor judges the overlap case by case, with the Head or Dean. You attach the paper itself, or proof of acceptance on the journal’s letterhead or from its official email address. Sharing a paper with a labmate at UoH? Agree early who will lead it. That choice follows both of you to thesis submission.

IIT Hyderabad. You may reproduce your own papers as chapters. But the institute’s author declaration form makes your supervisor pick one of three statements for each paper. The first is that only you and your guide are authors. The second is that you’re first or equal-contribution author. The third is that other contributors exist, the work in the thesis is mainly yours, and they won’t claim the same text in their own theses. Settle that last point with co-authors in your lab while the paper is being written. If a labmate plans to use the same figures in a later thesis, both declarations will be read.

Which journal choices cause trouble for Hyderabad scholars, and how do you check before submitting?

Going by the rules above, four choices cause most of the trouble:

1. A CARE-only journal for an Osmania thesis. Under the 2026-27 rules it no longer counts. Don’t rely on the CARE list. Confirm the title in Scopus Sources or in the Web of Science Master Journal List.
2. The wrong author order at JNTUH. Put your supervisor first and the paper fails section 9.1, however strong the journal.
3. A conference paper where a journal is needed. IIT Hyderabad counts indexed conference papers. Osmania and JNTUH speak only of journals.
4. A clone or a journal later dropped from Scopus. A cloned website borrows the name and ISSN of a genuine journal. And a real journal can be discontinued between your acceptance and the day the Examination Branch checks your reprints. Record the journal’s Scopus or Web of Science entry when you submit, and again at acceptance.

Each paper can spend most of a year in review, so the first one has to reach a journal long before the final year starts. A JNTUH scholar needs four papers before applying for the colloquium. In practice that usually means one paper in review while you write the next. UoH and MANUU scholars need one refereed paper. That leaves more room to aim at the right journal, not the fastest one.
