To get PhD admission at JNTU Hyderabad (JNTUH), you apply online, pass its entrance test unless exempt, and then face an interview at Kukatpally. You apply to its Directorate of Admissions, for one of four programmes. The test takes two hours. A NET, SLET, GATE or GPAT qualification exempts you from it, and so does an M.Phil. for some programmes. The interview is worth 50 marks. After it, the university allots your supervisor. The 2026-27 portal opened on 23 September 2026. It closes on 17 October, or on 31 October if you pay the late fee. And you file a separate application for each department.

How does JNTUH compare with Osmania, the University of Hyderabad and the IITs? That’s set out in our Hyderabad admissions overview. This guide goes through JNTUH’s own 2026-27 documents and its Ph.D. regulations. The UGC rules that apply across India are in our India-wide PhD admission page. Last reviewed September 2026.

Which of JNTUH’s four PhD programmes should you apply to?

The Directorate of Admissions page runs all four from one portal. But each has its own information document, and you can’t swap one for another:

JNTUH’s four PhD programmes in the 2026-27 notification
ProgrammeMeant forWhere the research happensTuition a year
Full-Time Ph.D.Holders of a research fellowship from UGC, CSIR, DST INSPIRE or another government body, and a few JNTUH university fellows.JNTUH constituent colleges: ten departments from Civil Engineering to Nano Science and Technology.₹20,000
Full-Time Ph.D. at research centres of affiliated collegesQualified candidates willing to work full-time at a recognised centre, which pays the fellowship.18 affiliated engineering colleges; Civil, EEE, Mechanical, ECE, CSE, Chemical Engineering and Management.₹20,000
External Ph.D.People employed in industry, R&D units, government bodies and colleges.Usually your own workplace, if it has the facilities.₹30,000
External Ph.D. for Industrial ExecutivesCompany executives; five years’ service with the present employer.Your organisation, with a JNTUH supervisor.₹60,000

The deciding question is money. JNTUH’s constituent-college full-time route is built around candidates who already hold a fellowship. Beyond those, JNTUH funds only a small number of its own. No fellowship? Then the real full-time option is a research centre in an affiliated college. There the college pays you under UGC norms and expects teaching help in return. If you will keep your job, the two external programmes are for you. For their NOC wording and workplace rules, see our guide for working professionals in Hyderabad.

Who is eligible for a JNTUH PhD in 2026-27?

The 2026-27 documents accept three routes into an engineering PhD. The first is a B.E. or B.Tech. followed by an M.E., M.Tech. or M.S. in the relevant branch. The second is a five-year integrated dual degree in the branch. The third is an MCA or M.Sc. followed by an M.Tech. Science and technology subjects need a master’s in the relevant branch. The research-centre programme also admits MBA graduates in Management. In every case the master’s must carry 55%. That is relaxed by 5% for SC, ST, BC, differently abled and EWS candidates.

Four conditions are easy to overlook:

  • You must hold the degree on the date of the notification. A final-year M.Tech. student cannot apply this round.
  • Only active departments admit. The notices say that only departments existing and active at JNTUH can offer the PhD.
  • Nobody checks your eligibility before the test. It is not checked when you apply or when hall tickets are issued. But a lapse found at any later stage ends the candidature.
  • Interdisciplinary work runs through a co-supervisor from the complementary discipline.

JNTUH also publishes an Annexure of thrust areas, and it says scholars are encouraged to work in them. A topic in one of those areas is easier to defend at the interview.

What does the JNTUH PhD entrance test cover, and who is exempt?

The test is computer-based: 100 multiple-choice questions in two hours. You need 40% if you are OC, 35% if BC and 30% if SC, ST or PH. The list of eligible candidates and the hall tickets appear only on jntuh.ac.in, after the last date. JNTUH does not write to you.

The 2026-27 entrance syllabus runs to 22 pages of subject topics, branch by branch. Civil Engineering, for example, lists strength of materials, structural analysis, concrete and steel design, soil mechanics and foundations, fluid mechanics, hydrology and irrigation. It reads like a revision list for a PG-level subject paper. We found no separate research methodology section in it, so prepare your branch first.

Who skips the test. The full-time, research-centre and external notices exempt candidates qualified in UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET or SLET. They also exempt holders of a valid GATE or GPAT score card. The research-centre and external notices add the M.Phil. to that list. The full-time notice for constituent colleges does not mention it. Exempt candidates go straight to the interview, and their merit rests on interview marks alone. The Industrial Executives programme has no written test for anyone.

How is the JNTUH PhD interview scored?

Thirty of the 50 marks are fixed by your record before the committee asks a question:

How JNTUH scores the PhD interview in 2026-27 (information to candidates, clause 5)
ComponentHow the marks are givenMaximum
UG performance (branch applied for)First class with distinction 10, first class 8, second class 6, pass class 410
PG performance (branch applied for)First class with distinction 10, first class 8, second class 610
Publications (branch applied for)2 marks for each SCI or Scopus paper; nothing for other journals10
Subject interviewMarked by the committee at JNTUH, Kukatpally20
Total50

Work out your own total before you go. Say you have first class in both degrees and no indexed papers. You start on 16 out of 30. With distinction in both and three Scopus papers, you start on 26. The ten-mark gap is half the subject interview. So the publication line matters more than it looks, but only SCI and Scopus papers count. Papers in UGC-CARE journals that are not indexed in either earn nothing here.

The merit list is drawn from these marks under the Telangana reservation rules. You attend at JNTUH, Hyderabad at your own cost. The list of those called, and the interview dates, are posted on the website only. The subject interview usually turns on your topic write-up. Our proposal-writing guide shows you how to write a short proposal that survives questioning.

How does JNTUH allot supervisors and research centres?

The 2026-27 vacancy statement gives faculty-wise totals for the constituent colleges. Then it lists every supervisor by name, with designation, department, area of specialisation and vacancies. Some entries read “Not willing”. Those supervisors are taking no one this year, however well your topic fits. The statement also notes that JNTUH may allot candidates to supervisors in affiliated colleges. That happens on the recommendation of the Director, R&D.

Your preference list gives you no right to a particular supervisor. The notices say JNTUH has the final say. It decides on vacancies, specialisation, the supervisor’s eligibility and other factors. Admission has three stages: qualifying the test, being shortlisted at the interview and being allotted a supervisor. Only after all three do you pay the first-year tuition and enrol with the R&D Cell.

For research centres the order is different. After the written test, shortlisted candidates hand in a list of centres in order of preference (Annexure-V) at the interview. JNTUH sends each centre its shortlist. The college then gives scholars to its own JNTUH-recognised supervisors. The 2026-27 list names 18 colleges. Among them are B.V. Raju Institute of Technology and Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology. So are Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology and Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology. VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology and CVR College of Engineering are on it too. What if you already teach at a college? A JNTUH-ratified faculty member who joins full-time at a centre is not counted in that college’s faculty strength while studying.

What do you upload and pay, and what follows admission?

Upload these as PDFs with the online form:

  • SSC or equivalent certificate
  • UG and PG degree certificates and marks memos
  • Transfer certificate from the college you last studied in
  • NET, CSIR-NET, SLET, GATE or GPAT scorecard, or M.Phil. certificate, with marks memo
  • Research fellowship award letter (full-time programme)
  • Caste certificate from the Telangana government, or the EWS certificate for 2026-27, or the PH certificate from the District Medical Board
  • Your publications in peer-reviewed or UGC-listed journals in the area of your topic
  • Your proposed research topic: a title plus a signed write-up of 500 words or more
  • Aadhaar number

The application fee is ₹2,000 for OC and BC candidates and ₹1,500 for SC, ST and PH candidates (₹5,000 for Industrial Executives). On selection you pay an admission fee of ₹1,500 (₹5,000 for executives). You also pay the yearly tuition shown in the table above. That tuition is due every year until the year you submit, under the JNTUH Ph.D. regulations for 2021-22 onwards. Late payment brings a 10% penalty for each year. Two unpaid years cancel the registration (clause 7.2).

After admission, the same regulations (clause 8) ask for a one-week Research Methodology course at the Directorate of R&D. It is offered twice a year, needs 75% attendance, and is best done in your first six months. Four theory subjects follow in the first one or two semesters, with internal and external exams. External scholars working at a research centre must take coursework at an institution other than their own. Research Review Meetings come every six months, and you need at least two satisfactory ones before the colloquium. The earliest you can submit is three years from admission.

Before that you need four papers, and you must be the first-named author (clause 9.1). Two or more must appear in journals indexed in Web of Science, SCI or Scopus. Our publication requirement guide explains the planning. Our JNTU thesis format guide covers the thesis itself.

FAQ

Questions scholars ask

Can I apply to two departments at JNTUH?

Yes, but each needs its own application and fee. The 2026-27 admissions page says a separate application must be submitted for each department or subject.

Is an M.Phil. an exemption from the JNTUH entrance test?

For the research-centre and external programmes, yes. Their 2026-27 notices list the M.Phil. with NET, SLET, GATE and GPAT. The full-time notice for the constituent colleges lists only NET, CSIR-NET, SLET, GATE and GPAT. So if you hold an M.Phil. and apply there, ask the Directorate before you rely on it.

I have no research fellowship. Can I still do a full-time PhD at JNTUH?

The constituent-college programme is aimed at fellowship holders, with only a few JNTUH fellowships on top. The research-centre programme in affiliated colleges is the other full-time route. The centre pays a fellowship under UGC norms, and you help with teaching there.

Do my UGC-CARE papers count at the JNTUH interview?

Only if the journal is also indexed in SCI or Scopus. The 2026-27 notices award 2 marks per paper indexed in SCI or Scopus, capped at 10. Other papers earn no marks.

Will JNTUH send me an interview letter?

No. The notices say the list of eligible candidates and the interview dates are displayed on jntuh.ac.in and that no separate intimation is sent. Check the website every few days after the last date.
