Which two papers does Bharathidasan accept before a synopsis, and who verifies them?
Clause 8.5 of the Ph.D. Regulations 2026 applies to full-time and part-time scholars alike. It covers every research centre in the city colleges as well as the university’s own departments. The index that counts depends on your faculty.
| Your faculty at Bharathidasan | Papers before the synopsis | Indexes that count |
|---|---|---|
| Science, Engineering and Technology | Two research articles, you as first author | Web of Science or Scopus, both papers |
| Arts, Languages, Commerce and Management | Two, with you as first author | At least one in Web of Science, Scopus, DOAJ, ERIC or ABDC; the second may be in a peer-reviewed, continuously published journal meeting the UGC suggestive parameters (at least 20 of them) |
| Tamil, Sanskrit, Hindi, French and Arabic | Two, you as first author | Peer-reviewed journals with at least ten years of archives and continuous publication, meeting the UGC suggestive parameters |
The same clause sets conditions that trip people up more often than the index does.
- First author, supervisor named. Each paper must carry your name as first author and your supervisor’s name. A paper where your guide is first author doesn’t count, however good the journal.
- The affiliation line. Papers from affiliated colleges and research institutes must say “Affiliated to Bharathidasan University”. You can’t add a missing line after publication.
- Indexed at verification, not at acceptance. The Doctoral Committee must check that the journal is actively indexed, and not discontinued, at the time of verification. Say Scopus drops the journal between your acceptance and the committee’s check. You’re then a paper short.
- No discontinued, cloned, predatory or dubious journals, and no presentations at predatory or dubious conferences.
- A certificate before the synopsis. The Research Section issues a Certificate for Research Publication, and it goes in with the synopsis. The fee table lists ₹500 per article. The section won’t verify papers while your research fees are overdue.
One gap in the paperwork is worth knowing. Clause 8.5 refers to the UGC suggestive parameters as “Annexure-I”. But the Annexure I linked on the university’s regulations page is the research-proposal guideline. Does your second paper depend on those parameters? Then ask the Research Section which list it applies before you submit.
Older advice from seniors can also mislead you. A Registrar’s notification of 2 July 2020 named UGC CARE alongside SCI, SSCI, Scopus and Thomson Reuters journals. It’s still listed among the Research Section circulars. But UGC CARE doesn’t appear anywhere in the 2026 clause, so a CARE-only journal isn’t a safe choice now. Admission and supervisor rules are summarised in our Bharathidasan admission guide.
What does NIT Tiruchirappalli check at the synopsis meeting, and why does it want peer-review proof?
Under P.19 of NIT Trichy’s Ph.D. Regulations 2024 you need at least two publications in reputed, indexed journals before the synopsis. Only the Web of Science Core Collection (SCI, SCIE, ESCI, SSCI and AHCI) and Scopus count. You can list accepted papers if you attach the acceptance documents. The Doctoral Committee verifies all of it at the synopsis meeting. And the institute’s requisition for conducting the synopsis has you list each paper under its index, authors in the order printed, before the meeting is even fixed.
Journals that charge an article processing charge get extra scrutiny.
- Open-access journals with an APC are accepted if they are in SCI, SCIE, SSCI or ESCI.
- Scopus journals with an APC are accepted only in quartiles Q1 and Q2.
- You bear the APC. You must also show proof of the peer-review process, the review timeline and the journal’s request for payment after acceptance. That lets the committee rule out a predatory outlet.
- Journals that publish conference proceedings aren’t considered at all.
Two of the institute’s own forms read more strictly than that. One is Form 6, the list of publications you enclose with the synopsis. The other is the synopsis meeting minutes. Both say publications in “paid journals” shall not be considered. So if your best-fit journal charges an APC, ask your Doctoral Committee which reading it will apply before you submit. Keep every email from the editor.
Papers also drive the rest of the programme. The two department seminars you give before the synopsis are meant to follow your first and second journal papers (P.18). The stipend enhancement after four semesters needs one of four things (P.16). That’s a journal paper, a Scopus or Web of Science conference paper, a patent, or a committee recommendation with an external expert. Then there’s the model plan for lateral entrants at the end of the regulations. It expects one paper accepted by the end of the sixth semester and two in the seventh, when the synopsis goes in. The plans for direct and integrated entrants set both two semesters later.
How do SASTRA in Thanjavur and Anna University’s BIT Campus count papers?
SASTRA Deemed University sits at Tirumalaisamudram in Thanjavur district, not in Trichy. Still, many Trichy scholars register there. Its PhD programme rules ask for output at two stages.
- Before the synopsis (DP 7.4): one paper published or accepted as first author in a peer-reviewed journal, or one patent filed. You also give a public seminar at SASTRA.
- Before the open defence (DP 7.6): two papers, two published patents, or one published patent and one paper, all as first author. At least one must be an original research article.
SASTRA names no particular index on that page. Check with your Doctoral Committee which journals it treats as peer-reviewed for your field.
Anna University scholars at BIT Campus, GCE Srirangam and the recognised private colleges follow clause 16 of the R2025 regulations. You need a minimum of one full-length research article, printed in a regular issue of a journal on the Centre for Research’s list. You must be first author, or second if your supervisor is first. At least one paper can have no more than four authors, and the journal’s site must show DOI or issue details. Short communications, letters and notes don’t count. A PG student may not be the corresponding author. And a retracted paper is dropped from consideration. Our Annexure I journals guide explains the CFR list itself.
Which journal choices get rejected by Trichy committees, and how do you check first?
Most rejected papers we hear about in Trichy fail one of four tests. Each one is written into the rules above.
- The journal was fine at acceptance and gone at verification. Bharathidasan checks indexing when its committee verifies, not when you were accepted. So save a dated copy of the journal’s Scopus Sources or Web of Science record three times. Do it at submission, at acceptance and just before you apply for the Certificate for Research Publication.
- The journal is a clone. Cloned sites copy a real title and ISSN and take payment. Compare the website address with the one in Scopus or the Master Journal List. Never trust the link in an email.
- The APC journal is Q3 or Q4. At NIT Trichy that single fact rules a paid Scopus journal out. Quartiles move each year, so check the current year and keep the record (our note on quartiles explains them).
- It’s really a proceedings volume. NIT Trichy excludes journals that publish conference proceedings. Anna University excludes short papers and letters.
When we build a shortlist for you, we check each journal live on Scopus Sources or the Web of Science lists. We do it the day we propose the journal, and again before you submit. The ISSN and publisher are matched against the journal’s own site, and we note the quartile where your university cares. You can do the same yourself with our guides to checking Scopus coverage and spotting predatory journals. Are you a management scholar weighing NIT Trichy against IIM Trichy or Bharathidasan? Our management PhD page for Trichy covers the admission side.
Working with us from Trichy
We work with Trichy scholars at a distance from Nagercoil. Our opening video call covers your manuscript and the rule your university applies. Then the drafts travel by email in tracked changes. The journal account is yours. You submit, and every reply to the editor goes out under your name.
Timing matters more than anything else here. A Bharathidasan scholar can submit the synopsis three months before the minimum period ends, but only with both papers verified. Take a three-year full-time registration, with three to eight months of review per paper. Your first manuscript should be with a journal by the middle of the second year. At NIT Trichy the seminars follow the papers, so a late first paper delays everything behind it. SASTRA needs only one paper at synopsis. That leaves room for the second during thesis evaluation.
Before you submit, we check the details committees look for. Is your name first? Is your supervisor named? Is the “Affiliated to Bharathidasan University” line there where it applies? For Anna University, we check author counts too. After acceptance we can help you put together the list of publications and dated indexing records for the Research Section or the Doctoral Committee. The verification fee, the signatures and the submission of forms stay with you. Our ethics policy explains why we never write papers for scholars.
Scope, stages, quality checks, timelines and pricing are the same wherever you are: Scopus Publication Support.

FAQ
Questions scholars in Trichy ask
Does a UGC CARE journal count for my Bharathidasan synopsis?
Not by that listing alone. Clause 8.5 of the 2026 Regulations names Web of Science and Scopus for science and engineering. It adds DOAJ, ERIC and ABDC for arts, commerce and management. In those faculties it also allows one paper meeting the UGC suggestive parameters. UGC CARE isn’t named, though a 2020 notification did name it.
My guide is first author on our strongest paper. Can it be one of my two at Bharathidasan?
No. Clause 8.5 counts articles where you are first author and your supervisor is named. Joint papers are normal. Just agree the author order before the manuscript goes to the journal.
Will NIT Trichy accept a paid open-access paper?
Under P.19 of the 2024 regulations, yes, if the journal is in SCI, SCIE, SSCI or ESCI, or is a Q1 or Q2 Scopus journal. You also have to show proof of peer review, and proof that the fee was requested after acceptance. But Forms 6 and 4B still say paid journals aren’t considered. Confirm with your Doctoral Committee first.
Does a Scopus-indexed conference paper help at NIT Trichy?
Not towards the two papers before the synopsis. Journals publishing conference proceedings are excluded. A conference paper indexed in Scopus or Web of Science can count towards the stipend enhancement after four semesters.
Can you check a journal someone in Trichy has offered me?
Yes, free of charge, whether or not you work with us. Send the journal name, ISSN and the website address you were given.
