To get PhD admission at Bharathidasan University, you pass its entrance test or hold NET, SET or SLET, then apply through a recognised research supervisor. The test is the Ph.D. Qualifying Entrance Examination, and it is held twice a year. Your supervisor’s department has a research committee. That committee approves your proposal and starts your provisional registration. The entrance ranks you 70% on a 100-mark online test and 30% on an interview. A pass certificate stays valid for five years. So you can apply to a supervisor at any time of the year within that period.

How to find a guide with room in Trichy is covered on our PhD guide in Trichy page. This page sets out the university’s own rules. It covers eligibility, the entrance, coursework, the minimum period and fees. We took them from the Ph.D. Regulations 2026 and the August 2026 entrance documents. Last reviewed September 2026.

What do you need before applying to Bharathidasan University for a PhD?

You need a 10+2+3+2 master’s with 55% or more, or a CGPA of 5.51 or more under CBCS, from Bharathidasan or a university recognised as equivalent (clause 2.1.1). The bar falls to 50% for candidates who are SC, ST or differently abled. It also falls to 50% for master’s degrees older than 19 September 1991. The degree must be in arts, science, management, commerce, or Indian and other languages. Engineering and technology count only for programmes Bharathidasan itself offers. So most engineers look to Anna University or NIT Tiruchirappalli (see our engineering PhD page for Trichy).

The regulations make some points that are easy to miss:

  • An M.Phil. does not replace the entrance. Your PG and M.Phil. must be in the same subject, and you still qualify in the entrance test.
  • Salaried staff cannot be full-time. Anyone drawing a regular time-scale salary from the university or a research centre is barred from the full-time category (clause 2.1.3). But research fellows of CSIR, ICAR or BARC can register full-time. So can JRFs, SRFs and project fellows on externally funded projects.
  • Part-time needs a job with some history. You need one year of continuous service, regular or temporary. Or you need two years (four semesters) as a guest lecturer. A college qualifies as the employer. An institute, company or other organisation needs at least ten full-time staff and a website (clause 1.4). Until the synopsis, you spend 30 days or more each year at the centre, in one or more spells.
  • Other states. A qualified candidate from another state needs a Bharathidasan eligibility certificate. A part-timer working outside Tamil Nadu also needs a co-supervisor in their state, with that person’s willingness letter and guideship letter.

The prospectus asks for a PG taken “under a regular pattern at a recognized university”. Final-year PG students may take the entrance. But they get the pass certificate only after they produce an attested cumulative mark statement with the required percentage.

What is the Bharathidasan PhD entrance examination like?

It runs in two rounds a year. For the February 2026 round, interviews took place on 17 and 18 April 2026, according to the February interview page. The August 2026 round went like this:

Bharathidasan University Ph.D. Qualifying Entrance Examination, August 2026, from the prospectus and entrance portal
ItemAugust 2026 examination
Notification dated24 July 2026
Online application28 July to 21 August 2026, 11.59 p.m.; no hard copy needed
Fee₹1,800 (SC and ST candidates ₹1,200; NRI and foreign candidates ₹15,000)
Mock tests28 and 29 August 2026
ExaminationSunday 30 August 2026, 11 a.m., online from home with a camera
Paper75 minutes, 50 multiple-choice questions, 100 marks; syllabus: your subject as taught in Bharathidasan’s PG course
To reach the interview50% (5% less for BC, MBC, DNC, SC, ST and differently-abled candidates)
Interviews9 and 10 October 2026, in person at the Khajamalai and Palkalaiperur campuses

Figures come from the August 2026 prospectus and the entrance portal. You choose one PG subject. For grouped subjects (Chemistry with Industrial or Analytical Chemistry, for example), the main subject is what gets tested. The August 2026 list ran to nine arts subjects and 22 in science. It also had five languages (Arabic, English, French, Sanskrit and Tamil) and three in commerce and management. Take both mock tests. They are the only way to check your camera, connection and the exam software before the day.

Who is exempt. Under clause 5.2.2, a pass in UGC-NET or UGC-CSIR NET (JRF included), SLET or SET means you don’t write the test. The August 2026 prospectus added “within 5 years”. So an older NET or SET pass may not be enough. If yours is older, ask the research section. GATE is not named. NRI and foreign candidates write the online entrance too (clause 5.2.3).

What happens between the interview and provisional registration?

The interview is worth 30 of your 100 marks. The August 2026 instructions split them 15 for subject knowledge, 10 for research aptitude and 5 for communication. It lasts 10 to 15 minutes. The schedule gives each subject a day and a venue on one of the two campuses. In the February 2026 round only NRI-category candidates could attend online. Successful candidates receive a pass certificate that stays valid for five years.

Then you find a supervisor, and the application goes through them, not straight to the university. Here are the steps in clauses 5.1 and 5.2:

  1. Your supervisor forwards your application with a brief research proposal in the format of Annexure I. Any experience certificate and publications go with it.
  2. The department’s Departmental Research Committee (DRC), made up of its recognised supervisors, meets. It confirms that the topic does not repeat earlier work, and recommends it. Your provisional registration runs from the date of that meeting.
  3. Within five days, you hand the university a hard copy of the application you uploaded online. If the university returns queries, you have seven days to fix them online and on paper. If you don’t, the application is rejected.

The regulations make the supervisor answerable for language errors in the proposal, so expect several rounds of edits. Our guide to writing a research proposal shows a clean structure. Clause 6.0 allows applications at any time of year. So once you have the certificate, there is no single deadline to miss.

Which supervisors and research centres can register you?

Research can happen in three places (clause 1.1). The first is the university’s own departments and funded centres. The second is approved research centres in its affiliated colleges (constituent, autonomous, aided or self-financing). The third is regional or national institutions, laboratories and industrial establishments anywhere in India that the university recognises. A college department becomes a centre only if it runs PG programmes and has at least two recognised research advisers. The committee that inspects it also fixes how many scholars it may take (clauses 4.2.1 and 4.5).

The rules for recognising a supervisor tell you something about their record. Under clause 3.1, a teacher needs two years’ regular service with the same employer. They also need research papers as first or corresponding author. That means five for a Professor or Associate Professor, and three for an Assistant Professor. In science, arts and social science, these must be in Web of Science or Scopus journals. Papers in predatory, cloned or discontinued journals don’t count. Guest lecturers and teaching assistants can’t be supervisors. And no one may apply with under three years left before retirement.

Clause 3.5 ties the ceiling to rank: 8 scholars for Professors, 6 for Associate and 4 for Assistant Professors. Part-timers are capped at half, and two international scholars may be added over the limit. A supervisor can’t register a blood relative (clause 5.4). Before you commit, look up your supervisor’s papers. Our note on spotting a predatory journal helps you judge them.

What coursework and minimum period apply at Bharathidasan?

Coursework comes in the first year. Your Doctoral Committee (DC) fixes it from your level of knowledge:

Bharathidasan University PhD coursework, clause 7.2 of the Ph.D. Regulations 2026
You enter withCoursesCredits
A PG degree, no M.Phil.Research Methodology (4), Research and Publication Ethics (2), core area of research (4), related area supporting the research (4)14
A PG degree and an M.Phil.Research and Publication Ethics (2), core area (4), related area (4)10
An engineering or technology PG in a programme Bharathidasan offersResearch Methodology (4), Research and Publication Ethics (2), core area (4), core area (4), related area (4)18

You finish within 12 months of provisional registration. If you don’t, the registration is cancelled automatically. Each paper is marked out of 100, with 25 internal and 75 external. Your supervisor sets and marks it. Then they send the scripts to the Controller of Examinations with a ₹500 fee for the mark statement. The DC, made up of three recognised supervisors, meets within six months of registration. It meets again after coursework, once half the minimum period has passed, and at synopsis. Our coursework and RPE guide explains the national rules behind these courses.

The minimum period depends on your degree and category (clause 8.1). Full-time, it is three years (maximum five) with an M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., MCA, MBA, M.Ed., CA or CFA. It is two years (maximum four) with an M.Phil. or a Bharathidasan M.Tech. or M.E. Part-time, it is four years (maximum six). Or it is three (maximum five) with an M.Phil., M.E. or M.Tech.

What does a Bharathidasan PhD cost, and what do you submit?

Section 20 of the regulations sets the fees, and they depend on where you register:

Bharathidasan University PhD fees, section 20 of the Ph.D. Regulations 2026 (SC and ST scholars are exempt from the internet and library parts)

Pay on time. If the research fee is 30 days overdue, your registration is cancelled. Renewing it within three months costs a revival fee of ₹1,000 a year. Extensions are granted only after your registration is confirmed. Did the maximum period already run out? Then an extension costs ₹5,000 a year plus a ₹2,000 a year revival fee. Scholars at recognised research centres outside the university and its colleges follow a separate table in the same section.

What you need to hand in, across the stages:

FAQ

Questions scholars ask

Is GATE accepted instead of the Bharathidasan entrance test?

The regulations don’t say so. Clause 5.2.2 names UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, SLET and SET only. So if you have GATE, plan to write the university’s entrance.

Can I take the Bharathidasan entrance from outside Tamil Nadu?

Yes. The August 2026 test was taken online from home with a camera. Candidates from other states need the university’s eligibility certificate before admission. But interviews were in person in Tiruchirappalli. The only exception was NRI candidates in the February 2026 round.

I qualified in the entrance in 2023. Do I have to write it again?

No, if you apply before your certificate turns five years old. Clause 5.2.2 keeps the eligibility certificate from the entrance valid for five years.

Does an M.Phil. shorten a Bharathidasan PhD?

Yes. With an M.Phil., the minimum is two years full-time instead of three, or three part-time instead of four. You also skip the research methodology paper. But you still have to pass the entrance. And your PG and M.Phil. must be in the same subject.
