What research methodology coursework do Hyderabad PhD scholars take before the analysis?

Every university in the city teaches methodology in the first year. But the weight differs a great deal. It runs from a one-week audit course at JNTUH to a four-credit examined paper at Osmania and MANUU. Our coursework guide explains the UGC’s national rules. The table shows what each university adds.

Entrance tests show what the universities expect you to know already. Take JNTUH. In the 2026-27 entrance syllabi, the first unit of the Management Science syllabus covers analysis and interpretation of research data, with parametric and non-parametric tests. The Mathematics syllabus covers estimation, sampling and hypothesis testing. Now the University of Hyderabad. At its Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion, the 2026-27 prospectus gives 35 of the 70 entrance marks to research methodology. That includes surveys, quantitative and qualitative methods and data interpretation.

What will the University of Hyderabad ethics committee ask about your sample and your data?

Almost everything a methods chapter holds. The University of Hyderabad Institutional Ethics Committee reviews projects that involve human participants. Its application form reads like the first draft of a methods chapter. It asks for:

• the research category: quantitative, qualitative, mixed, applied or basic
• the hypothesis, if there is one
• the study area, collaborating institutions and study sites
• target respondents with their age group and gender, stating any vulnerability
• the sampling process and the sample size
• how informed consent will be taken and by whom, with the participant information sheet and consent form attached
• how confidentiality is protected, whether identifiers are removed, and how data are stored and for how long.

Every proposal first goes to a technical review or specialist sub-committee. You have to answer its comments before the full committee looks at it. You also make two promises. The research won’t begin until approval is given. And the protocol and consent form won’t change without the committee’s agreement. That second promise ties your analysis to the plan. Say you told the committee a sample of 300 households and a comparison of three districts. A different design later is then a protocol change, not a statistical choice. So fix the sample size and the likely tests before you apply.

The form also lists grounds for exemption or expedited review. These include research on data in the public domain, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and progress reports where the only activity is data analysis. Does your thesis rest on published datasets? Then say so, and ask for the exempt category. The form cites the ICMR national ethical guidelines of 2017. IIT Hyderabad’s Institutional Ethics Committee points its researchers to the same ICMR guidelines. If you’re based at one of the city’s CSIR or ICMR labs, ask early which institution’s committee reviews your study. Our guide to Hyderabad’s research institutes describes the laboratories. Where is your analysis reviewed at Osmania, JNTUH and MANUU before the thesis goes in?

Osmania. Your Research Advisory Committee guides “the study design and methodology of research” (clause 12). There are three seminars. The first, the Research Design Seminar, must happen within three months of the coursework result. Miss it and your registration is cancelled automatically (23.2). Half-yearly progress reports must cover the data collected and the techniques developed (22.1). At the end, each external examiner fills in a three-part report. You need 55% of the points in the detailed evaluation to reach the viva (28.7). A vague analysis plan at the design seminar tends to come back at that stage, as a weak methods chapter.

JNTUH. Here the reviews are Research Review Meetings. Under section 9.2 of the PhD regulations, you present at each one with a written progress report in duplicate. You need at least two satisfactory reports before the colloquium. JNTUH’s thesis outline suggests a chapter order that separates theoretical analysis, experimental investigations, results and the discussion of results. So in an engineering or management thesis, keep the analysis and its interpretation in their own chapters.

MANUU. The 2023 regulations make the second semester a methods semester. You present the synopsis to the Departmental Research Committee and write a review paper. You give a seminar on your research design and methodology before the Research Advisory Committee (17.8.5.4). And you take at least one week-long workshop. The regulations list the options as ICT, computer, SPSS, teaching or writing (17.8.5.5). The certificate for all this goes into your academic clearance before submission.

EFLU and the University of Hyderabad. EFLU’s handbook has you write a full proposal after coursework, around 10,000 words long. It notes that its Education and English Language Education methodology courses focus on subject selection, data collection and analysis. At the University of Hyderabad, examiners send their viva questions in a separate sealed proforma with the examiner’s report. So expect questions on your test choices that you haven’t seen in advance. The university adopted the UGC 2022 regulations, and they also allow the viva to be held online.

That means the design, sample size, variables and the tests you’ll name. Before a University of Hyderabad ethics application, we can check your draft form. Do the sampling process, sample size and data storage agree with the analysis you intend? After data collection, we run or check the analysis. We look at reliability and validity for questionnaire scales, and at how results such as regression output are reported. Before a JNTUH colloquium or an Osmania pre-submission seminar, the output review checks the analysis chapter against what examiners ask.
