Does your subject go through the University of Hyderabad entrance or through NET?

Check the notification for your subject before anything else. The 2026-27 prospectus puts some subjects on UGC-NET or CSIR-NET, as the university notifies them. The rest go through its own entrance. Each route has its own notification.

In the NET stream, the notification names the NET subject that counts. The details differ by department in the September 2026 notification:

• Computer Science asks for a degree with 60% plus a valid UGC-NET score in Computer Science and Applications. Its NET column also lists a GATE score in CS/IT or Data Science and AI.
• Electronics Science and Engineering accepts all three NET categories in Electronic Science or Physical Sciences. It also takes a B.E. or B.Tech. with 60%, even without an M.E. or M.Tech.
• Chemistry treats an M.Sc. in Physics, Materials Science or Life Sciences as allied. But it warns that scholars must run their own experiments, with no assistant or scribe allowed.

The entrance stream has its quirks too. Materials Engineering and Nanoscience give 5 of their 30 interview marks for a valid GATE, CSIR-NET or SLET score. They also accept a B.E. or B.Tech. with 75%. Plant Sciences sets a higher floor: 60% in the life science subjects of the M.Sc.

What is the University of Hyderabad PhD entrance test like, and what is the cut-off?

It’s a 70-mark written test, usually in two halves. The Prospectus 2026-27 describes it department by department. Education sets 35 marks of research methodology and 35 on its subject. Gender Studies uses 70 marks of MCQs in the same two parts. English Language Studies adds essay questions for 15 of its subject marks. And Optometry and Vision Sciences puts negative marking of 0.33 on its aptitude and methodology section only. So read your department’s page of the prospectus. That is where the pattern is set.

The selection rules come from the prospectus section on qualifying marks:

• Cut-off. You need 50% in the test as a General or EWS candidate. It is 45% if you are SC, ST, OBC-NCL or a person with a disability.
• Shortlist ratio. If many clear the cut-off, interview calls are limited to 1:6 (a 78th Academic Council decision). If too few clear it, candidates are called by percentile instead.
• Merit. Test marks (70) and interview marks (30) are added together. JRF holders are interviewed only. Their 30-mark score is converted to a 100-mark scale so that they sit in the same ranking.
• Ties. These are broken by marks in the qualifying degree, then the degree before it, then the next lower public examination.
• Absence. Miss the interview and you forfeit admission, whatever your test mark.

For the July 2026 session, the notification of 30 April 2026 named seven test cities. These were Hyderabad, Kochi, Patna, Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar, each only if at least 100 candidates chose it. The January 2026 session tested at Hyderabad only. How do departments split the 30 interview marks, and what proposal do you need?

Each department publishes its own split in Annexure-1 of the notification. So two candidates at the same university can prepare quite differently. Here are a few 2026-27 examples:

• Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences: 5 for the research proposal and its defence, 5 for a valid CSIR-UGC-NET JRF, 20 for the interview. Physics, next door in the same school, puts all 30 on the interview.
• Sanskrit Studies: six components of 5 marks, including logical reasoning, domain knowledge and knowledge of Sanskrit.
• Economics (NET stream): 15 for domain knowledge, 15 for the proposal and its defence.
• Management Studies (NET stream): 15 for the proposal, 5 for past academic record, 10 for the interview.
• Chemistry (NET stream): the whole 30 on the interview.

The proposal matters in almost every department:

• Length and copies. The 2026-27 prospectus asks shortlisted candidates to bring six copies of a research proposal of about 500 to 2,500 words. Candidates without one will not be interviewed.
• What History wants. The Department of History asks for the topic, hypotheses or research questions, objectives, statement of the problem and methods, all clearly written. It also warns that admitted students may have to adapt the proposal to the supervisors available.
• What Music wants. A research outline sent in advance and defended at interview, though an admitted scholar may later research another topic.
• How Computer Science marks it. Nine marks for delivering and defending the proposal, three for how well it fits faculty research, and three for documentation and bibliography, beside 15 marks of subject questioning.

July 2026 interviews ran in hybrid mode. For the NET-based session, each academic unit tells shortlisted candidates the mode itself. Don’t wait for a letter. Who is eligible, and can you apply before your master’s result?

The prospectus sets 55% in the master’s for General and EWS candidates and 50% for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates. That follows the UGC 2022 rules, adopted by the 91st Academic Council on 6 April 2023. Departments add their own needs. Regional Studies wants an M.A. in English medium. Folk Culture Studies takes a thesis in English only. English Language Studies asks for adequate English. Several programmes also admit four-year honours-with-research graduates with 75%, among them Economics and Indian Diaspora.

Can you apply before your result? Yes, if the qualifying examination, practicals, project and viva are complete. The result and certificates must also arrive by 31 October 2026. Until then your admission is conditional, and it is cancelled if the certificates do not come. An M.Phil. or M.Tech. candidate whose viva is over may be admitted and given up to a year to submit the result. But there is no fellowship until the certificate is in.

Are you employed? If you get selected, you must hand in an NOC and orders sanctioning leave for the whole course when you complete admission. Without them, the selection is cancelled. National eligibility rules and the NET categories are covered in our guide to PhD admission in India.

How are supervisors assigned, and is there a part-time or external route?

You do not choose a supervisor on the form. Each school, department or centre assigns supervisors, says the prospectus. It works within the UGC limits: eight scholars for a Professor, six for an Associate Professor and four for an Assistant Professor. The adopted regulations also need a supervisor to be allotted within one month of admission. Your proposal may be reshaped to fit whoever is available.

Part-time. The prospectus keeps part-time seats of up to one-eighth of a school’s strength for people teaching or researching in reputed institutions. In the School of Computer and Information Sciences and the School of Engineering Sciences and Technology, the share is 25%. For the science schools, except Mathematics and Statistics, it is limited to the twin cities. For other schools it is limited to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. A part-timer cannot later convert to full-time. Neither 2026-27 notification listed separate part-time seats, so ask the department before you rely on it. External registration. Staff of 30 recognised centres can register externally through the same admission process. You get one supervisor at the university and a co-supervisor at the centre. The list pairs each centre with subjects. NGRI and NRSC go with Physics and Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. CDFD, ICRISAT and the ICAR rice and oilseeds institutes go with Life Sciences. DMRL and ARCI go with Engineering Sciences. NIRD and the Centre for Economic and Social Studies go with Economics and Anthropology. And IDRBT, RCI and ANURAG go with Computer Science. For Computer Science, only people working in the listed twin-city institutes may register this way. The laboratories themselves are described in research institutes in Hyderabad.

When does the University of Hyderabad call for PhD applications, and what do scholars pay?

Usually twice a year. The main July session is notified in spring. A NET-based call follows once the NET results are out. Then a January session is notified around October, mainly for seats left from July.

Application fees for the January 2026 session were ₹600 (General), ₹550 (EWS), ₹400 (OBC-NCL) and ₹275 (SC, ST and PwD). At admission, the 2026-27 fee table charges full-time PhD scholars no tuition. You still pay a total at admission, refundable deposits included. It was ₹8,820 in the humanities, social sciences and economics. It was ₹10,510 in mathematics, computer science, physics and similar schools, and ₹11,810 in chemistry and the life sciences. Music came to ₹17,420, and materials engineering and nanoscience to ₹19,850. Part-time and externally registered scholars pay tuition on top (₹14,575 in all at admission in the humanities). Candidates admitted under the PwBD category are exempt from tuition and other fees.

After admission you take 12 to 14 coursework credits, with an ethics paper and a methodology paper among them. You need 55% to confirm registration.
