To get PhD admission at the University of Madras, you apply online in June or December and pass your chosen institution’s 50-mark entrance test. First you deliver the printed form to the department, affiliated college or recognised institute you hope to join. That institution sets its own test. Its selection committee then ranks you on your PG marks and the entrance equally. After that, the university confirms the selection and grants you provisional registration.

Our Chennai admission guide sets Madras beside Anna University, IIT Madras and the others. This page stays with Madras alone. It covers who is eligible, how the entrance and merit list work, and the part-time categories. It also covers which supervisors can take you and what the first year costs. Last reviewed September 2026.

When does the University of Madras take PhD applications?

Two sessions run each year. One begins in January and one in July. Chapter 1, clause 2 of the Research Regulations 2021 opens the online application in December and June. The Registrar’s circular for each session then fixes the exact dates. The two most recent circulars follow the same pattern:

Sources: the circular of 29 November 2024 and the circular of 30 May 2026. When we checked on 27 September 2026, the application portal showed the July 2026 session as closed. If the pattern holds, the January 2027 window opens on 1 December 2026. But wait for the circular before you plan around it.

The step that decides whether a seat exists happens earlier. Under section 3.2, each department, college and recognised centre must send the university its vacancies in May and November. It sends them subject-wise and supervisor-wise. A college that does not send them can’t admit anyone that session. So in May or November, ask the college which supervisors reported a vacancy in your subject. Clause 3.1.4 also asks institutions to post the seats and test dates on their own websites. Check there too.

Who is eligible for a University of Madras PhD?

You need a PG degree with 55% marks, or a B on the UGC’s seven-point grading. You must have reached it through 10+2, then a UG degree of at least three years, then the PG, in that order (clause 2.1). SC, ST and differently abled applicants need 50%. So do those whose master’s came before 19 September 1991. Grace marks don’t count towards either figure (clause 2.2). If your university grades rather than marks, send its official conversion table.

The list of accepted degrees is wider than most people expect:

  • PG degrees in arts, sciences, fine arts, languages, commerce, education, physical education, management and law.
  • Engineering, technology, medicine (MD, MS), Indian medicine, veterinary science, M.Pharm. and agriculture, but only for admission in life sciences and basic or biomedical sciences.
  • MBBS, BVSc or an AYUSH degree plus two years of house-surgeon service or equivalent special training, again for life and biomedical sciences.
  • ACA, FCA, AICWAI or ACSI with four years of professional experience after qualifying, for commerce and related subjects.
  • M.Sc. Defence and Strategic Studies from the NDA, the National Defence College or the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

A PG degree earned elsewhere needs a Madras eligibility certificate before the university will ratify your admission (clause 2.1.11). The degree is awarded in your PG subject. Each Board of Studies keeps the list of PG degrees it accepts. If your master’s has an unusual title, check that list. The university stopped admitting M.Phil. students from 2024–25 (circular of 25 April 2024). So the M.Phil. concessions below only help those who already hold one. The all-India rules on NET and fellowships are summarised in our PhD admission in India guide.

How are the entrance test and merit list run, and who is exempt?

Each institution runs its own. It does so through a Departmental Selection Committee of the head of department and all the department’s recognised supervisors. The committee has at least three members (section 3.2). Under clause 3.3 of the regulations:

  • The test carries 50 marks: 35 written and 15 oral. You need 25 in all. The regulations mention a 5% relaxation to 45% but don’t say who gets it. So ask the committee how it applies it.
  • You are tested only in the subject you applied for. The test covers research aptitude, subject knowledge and research methodology. The head of department and the subject’s supervisors set a paper with both objective and descriptive questions. They mark it themselves.
  • The merit list then takes 50% from your PG marks and 50% from the test (clause 3.2.1), under the Tamil Nadu reservation policy. Half the weight is on PG marks. So a candidate with 58% has to beat one with 75% by about 8.5 of the 50 entrance marks just to draw level.

After selection, the head of the institution assigns your supervisor by mutual consent. They look at how many scholars each supervisor has and at each one’s specialisation. They also look at the interests you stated at the interview. An interdisciplinary applicant must bring a substantial proposal the supervisor accepts. And a topic on a living author or person needs that person’s written permission. A short, clear proposal helps in both cases. See our guide to writing a research proposal.

Exemptions. Clause 3.1.3 lets holders of UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, DBT, DST-INSPIRE and ICMR fellowships join in any month, with no entrance test. Project fellows on MRP or RUSA projects also join at any time. But they do take the entrance. The regulations name no exemption for NET, SET or GATE without a fellowship.

Who can do a part-time PhD at Madras, and on what conditions?

Only people whose workplace lies within the university’s territorial jurisdiction. And only after a qualifying period of service (clause 2.3.2):

  • A permanent teacher in a university department, an affiliated college, or a State or Central university in the jurisdiction, after two years of unbroken service.
  • A school teacher in a permanent post (Secondary Grade, BT Assistant or PG Assistant) or a polytechnic teacher, after four years with the same employer following the PG degree.
  • A guest lecturer working full-time who has taught for four unbroken years at one institution.
  • A regular employee of a registered firm, factory, society or company, or of a government office, government autonomous body or international company, four years after the qualifying degree. A private employer must be reputed, with a website and a full-time staff of at least ten.
  • An M.L. graduate practising as an advocate or legal adviser for four years. Officers of the armed and paramilitary forces qualify wherever they are posted.

Clause 2.3.2.10 spells out what the employer’s No Objection Certificate must contain. It must give you permission to study part-time. It must state that your duties leave room for research. And it must promise to relieve you for coursework if needed. Applicants in corporate or IT-enabled firms must route the application through their employer with a digitally signed letter. An email is not accepted. You renew the employment certificate every year. A transfer out of the jurisdiction ends the registration. The days you must spend at the supervisor’s institution are set out on our part-time PhD in Chennai page.

Which supervisors and research centres can take University of Madras scholars?

Besides the university departments and affiliated colleges, the university’s research centres page listed 46 recognised research centres when we checked. Some are national labs. They include CSIR’s Central Leather Research Institute, and ICMR’s National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis and National Institute of Epidemiology. Others are Chennai names you’ll know: the Madras Institute of Development Studies, the Madras School of Economics and the Cancer Institute (WIA). The list also has the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, the Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute and the Government Museum, Egmore. Are you in economics or Sanskrit? You may find a better-placed supervisor at one of these than in a college.

Chapter 3 of the regulations sets who can take you:

  • Numbers. Eight scholars for a Professor or a Principal of professor rank, six for an Associate Professor, four for an Assistant Professor. At research institutes, Scientist F and G count as professors, E-II as associate and C or E-I as assistant. A supervisor may take one extra scholar working on their funded project.
  • Retirement. No new scholars in the last two years of service. The head of the institution certifies this. At self-financing colleges and at research institutes other than central and state government ones, the age limit for registering scholars is 59. Retired teachers cannot supervise in any capacity.
  • Co-supervision of interdisciplinary work is not counted in the limits, but is capped at three scholars.

What happens in the first year, and what does a Madras PhD cost?

Once the university ratifies your admission, you have one month to register. A delay of up to a year costs ₹5,000 (clause 5.1). Within a month of provisional registration, your supervisor forms a Research Advisory Committee (RAC). The supervisor is its convener. The other members are the head of department and a recognised supervisor from a neighbouring institution. The RAC meets every six months until you submit. Our guide to progress reports and the RAC explains what these meetings expect.

Coursework is the gateway to permanent registration:

Coursework under chapter 1, section 6 of the Research Regulations 2021
CourseCreditsWho sets the syllabusM.Phil holders
I. Research and Publication Ethics2UGC syllabus approved by the Academic CouncilRequired
II. Research Methodology4Common to all disciplines in a schoolExempt if the M.Phil was in the same or a related subject
III. An advanced course in the subject5Common to all PhD scholars in the departmentExempt if the M.Phil was in the same subject
IV. A course on the research theme5Specific to you, taught mainly by your supervisorRequired

The RAC approves the syllabi within six months and holds the examinations within a year. Every paper is a three-hour, 100-mark examination costing ₹250, and you need 55%. The RAC may allow up to four credits through MOOCs. If you have not completed permanent registration within 12 months of admission, the temporary registration lapses (clause 11.1). The national rules behind these courses are in our coursework and RPE guide.

The fees the university itself sets are modest. There’s the ₹1,770 application and ₹250 per coursework paper. Then there’s an annual continuation fee of ₹2,000 full-time or ₹3,000 part-time (Tamil Nadu SC and ST candidates exempt). You pay it each year on the anniversary of your session. Colleges charge their own fees on top, and the regulations don’t fix them. So ask for the college’s schedule in writing. You need at least three years and may take up to six. Re-registration can add up to two years, for a fee of ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 a year. The thesis follows our University of Madras thesis format guide.

FAQ

Questions scholars ask

Does NET or SET exempt me from the University of Madras entrance test?

Not by itself, on the regulations’ wording. Clause 3.1.3 exempts holders of named fellowships (UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, DBT, DST-INSPIRE, ICMR). A NET or SET pass without a fellowship isn’t mentioned. So expect to sit the department’s test. If you think otherwise, ask the committee.

I missed the June window. Can I still join this year?

Only in two cases. You may hold one of the fellowships in clause 3.1.3, which allow admission at any time. Or you may be a project fellow on an MRP or RUSA project, who can take the entrance at any time. Otherwise, wait for the December window and the January session.

My master’s is from Bharathiar University. Can I apply to a Madras college?

Yes, but you need a University of Madras eligibility certificate. The admission isn’t ratified until you have it. Apply for it early, so it doesn’t hold up your provisional registration.

Does an M.Phil. still shorten a Madras PhD?

Yes, for those who already hold one. The M.Phil. removes one year from the three-year minimum (clause 7.1). It also cuts your coursework. If it is in the same subject, you skip papers II and III. If it is in a related subject, you skip paper II alone.
