The University of Madras registers a part-time PhD scholar only if the workplace lies in Chennai, Thiruvallur or Kancheepuram district, and cancels the registration if the employer later transfers you out. The other three Chennai options for someone keeping a job set different tests: Anna University looks at the type of employer, IIT Madras’s external registration scheme at two years of relevant experience (plus a semester in residence), and SRMIST at whether your organisation is one of its recognised research centres.
The UGC 2022 regulations allow part-time study with an employer’s No Objection Certificate, a clause our national admission guide explains. Last reviewed September 2026.
Where in Chennai can you keep your job during a PhD?
Four institutions allow it, on quite different terms.
| Who can register part-time | Time you must give on campus | Paperwork from your employer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anna University | Staff of its own and government or aided engineering colleges (internal); teachers elsewhere in Tamil Nadu and staff of qualifying firms and labs in the state (external). | No residency period, but coursework runs with PG students (or as NPTEL courses) and seminars are on weekdays. | NOC in the university’s prescribed format with the application. |
| IIT Madras (external registration) | Anyone with at least two years of relevant work experience in an industry, organisation or institution. | One semester in residence, with 20 weeks of leave from the employer. | NOC or sponsorship certificate, relief certificate, co-guide particulars. |
| University of Madras | Teachers, school teachers, government staff and firm employees working inside its jurisdiction, after two to four years’ service. | At least two months a year at the supervisor’s institution; eight months in all for laboratory subjects. | Employment certificate and an NOC with three prescribed statements; employment certificate renewed yearly. |
| SRMIST | Internal: SRMIST employees. External: employees of organisations recognised as SRMIST research centres. | None fixed; synopsis no earlier than 3 years 3 months after registration. | The employer must be a recognised research centre and provide a co-supervisor. |
VIT is missing on purpose. Its January 2026 VITREE brochure lists the Chennai campus as internal full-time only, with external part-time registration at the Bhopal campus alone. Full-time selection is on our PhD admission in Chennai page; medical, nursing and pharmacy staff will find the M.G.R. Medical University’s separate part-time rules on our health-sciences PhD in Chennai page.
Part-time applications stall more often on paperwork than on academics, so start on the employer letters a month before the window opens:
- For Anna University: the NOC on the university’s own format, which comes with the application form. Industry applicants should also have evidence that the company meets the norms.
- For IIT Madras: a No Objection Certificate or sponsoring certificate at the application stage, a one-page write-up of your research topic, and at admission a relief certificate for 20 weeks and the particulars of a co-guide in your organisation.
- For the University of Madras: an employer’s certificate of how long and in what post you have worked, and an NOC stating that you may study part-time, that your duties leave time for research and that you will be relieved for coursework if needed.
- If you work in IT or a corporate office: Madras wants the application sent through proper channel with a letter carrying your employer’s digital signature (DSC). An email from HR is not accepted.
Does your employer qualify for Anna University’s part-time categories?
Anna University sorts part-time scholars by employer first. Part-time internal means you teach or work in one of its own departments or constituent colleges, or you are permanent faculty at a government or aided engineering or polytechnic college. Part-time external takes in teachers at Tamil Nadu’s self-financing colleges (engineering, polytechnic, arts and science), at deemed universities and at central institutes, plus people employed in industry, R&D units, national labs, government bodies and registered companies inside the state. R2025 also admits regular faculty from other states; the July 2026 brochure limits this to engineering-college faculty, under a supervisor in a university department, constituent college or government or aided engineering college.
If you are in industry, the Centre for Research publishes separate norms, and your company has to meet all of them:
- it is located in Tamil Nadu and has existed for at least three years;
- your place of work is no more than 100 km from your supervisor’s institution;
- it has at least 25 regular employees and a turnover of at least ₹5 crore a year in each of the last three financial years;
- you have three years of industrial experience, and (clause 3.2.2(iv) of the July 2026 brochure) the industry is relevant to your proposed research.
A mid-sized Chennai IT services firm or an auto-component supplier in the Sriperumbudur belt will often clear these; a four-person start-up will not, however good the work.
Where the coursework fits
R2025 sets no residency period for part-time scholars (only full-time scholars sign a daily attendance register), and the research is done where your supervisor works. The pressure point is coursework. Under clause 13.1 of R2025 your Doctoral Committee prescribes four courses (12 credits) from the university’s PG programmes, and they count only if you take them alongside the PG students, which means weekday classes. The alternative is up to four PG-level Swayam-NPTEL courses with graded certificates. The Centre for Research FAQ adds that courses at deemed or private institutions not affiliated to Anna University are not accepted. The first Doctoral Committee meeting must be on a working day, both seminars are held in person on weekdays at the supervisor’s workplace, and the synopsis meeting and viva are physical only. Plan leave for these.
Part-time minimum duration is three years in engineering and technology and four in science and humanities, against a six-year maximum. Our coursework and RPE guide covers the course content itself, and the Anna University thesis format guide covers the end of the road.
What does IIT Madras external registration ask of you and your employer?
IIT Madras calls its main route for working people the external registration scheme, and the July 2026 brochure sets it out in section 4.1:
- Experience. At least two years of relevant work in an industry, organisation or institution. The department checks this.
- A national score may not be needed. Section 5.1.3 says the GATE or NET requirement for regular scholars may be waived for external candidates, though the degree requirements still apply.
- Residence. One semester at IIT Madras. Your employer signs a relief certificate granting 20 weeks (140 days) of leave. If you live within commuting distance, you can do the coursework without the residency, with your organisation’s permission and without taking leave for classes, provided you finish coursework and the Comprehensive Examination in time.
- A co-guide at work. Someone in your organisation with at least a master’s degree and relevant experience signs on as co-guide and is invited to your committee meetings.
- Your employer’s promises. The sponsoring certificate commits the organisation to give you its facilities, not to transfer you in a way that hurts the research, and not to patent or sell the work without IIT Madras’s agreement.
External scholars can never move into the half-time research assistantship, so this route suits people who intend to stay employed. Employees of companies in the IIT Madras Research Park who have passed two institute courses (18 credits) with a CGPA of at least 7.5 can go straight to interview, as non-assistantship scholars. For someone already working in the Research Park, that is probably the shortest route in the city.
How strict is the University of Madras about where you work?
Very. Clause 2.3.2 of the Research Regulations makes part-time registration depend on your place of work being inside the university’s territorial jurisdiction, which the university itself describes as confined to three districts: Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram. If your office is near a district boundary, ask the Dean of Research’s office before applying. Clause 2.3.2.11 then says that if you are transferred outside it after admission, you lose the registration and must apply again. Ask your employer how likely a transfer is before you apply; for bank and central government staff it often is.
The service conditions depend on who you are:
- a permanent teacher in a university department, affiliated college or state or central university in the jurisdiction: two years of continuous service;
- a permanent PG Assistant, BT Assistant or Secondary Grade Teacher, or a polytechnic teacher: four years with the same employer after the PG degree;
- a full-time guest lecturer: four years in the same institution;
- a non-teaching employee of a registered firm or institution: four years after the qualifying degree, in a firm with at least ten full-time employees and a website (a factory under the Factories Act, a company under the Companies Act, or a society audited for three years);
- administrative and non-teaching staff of state and central government offices and government-owned bodies: four years after the qualifying degree;
- advocates with an M.L. degree: four years of practice or legal work in the jurisdiction;
- officers of the armed and paramilitary forces: eligible wherever they are posted.
Time at the supervisor’s institution
Clause 8.4 asks part-time scholars in non-laboratory subjects to work at least two months in every academic year at the supervisor’s institution, and the supervisor certifies it when you apply for continuation. In laboratory subjects, if you work somewhere other than the supervisor’s institution, clause 8.5 asks for eight months in all, which can be split into four spells of at least two months. Add 16 credits of coursework in the first year, and a Madras part-time PhD needs more planned time off than people expect.
If you start full-time and then get a job, clause 9.1 lets you convert to part-time after permanent registration and two years (one year if you held a stipend), provided the new post meets the part-time rules. The thesis itself follows the same rules either way; our University of Madras thesis format guide sets them out.
How does SRMIST treat part-time scholars?
SRMIST’s Ph.D. Regulations 2023 have two part-time categories. Part-time internal is for its own employees. Part-time external is for people working in industry, colleges, government departments and research organisations, but only where the employing organisation is recognised as an SRMIST research centre. You then have an SRMIST supervisor plus a co-supervisor or research coordinator at work, and you may research at your workplace, at SRMIST, or both.
The minimum is three years for everyone, but the earliest synopsis is 2 years 9 months after registration for full-time scholars and 3 years 3 months for part-time. Ask your R&D head whether the company already has research-centre status with SRMIST; if not, that comes first.

FAQ
Questions scholars ask
Can I do an Anna University part-time PhD while working in a Chennai IT company?
Yes, if the company meets the Centre for Research norms for industry candidates: located in Tamil Nadu, no more than 100 km from your supervisor’s institution, at least three years old, with at least 25 regular employees and ₹5 crore annual turnover over the last three years. You need three years of industrial experience, the industry must be relevant to your research, and your supervisor must be in a university department, constituent college, government or aided college, or a department-recognised institute.
Can a school teacher in Chennai do a part-time PhD?
At the University of Madras, yes: permanent PG Assistants, BT Assistants and Secondary Grade Teachers with four years of service after the PG degree are eligible, if the school is within the jurisdiction. At Anna University, no: the July 2026 brochure states that teachers working in schools are not eligible.
Do I have to take leave for an IIT Madras external PhD?
For the one-semester residence, yes; the relief certificate grants 20 weeks. If you live within commuting distance and your employer permits it, you can do the coursework without residence and without leave for classes, as long as you keep to the coursework deadlines.
What happens if my employer transfers me out of Chennai during the PhD?
At the University of Madras, a transfer outside its jurisdiction after admission means losing the registration. IIT Madras asks the employer to inform it within a month of any transfer and decides whether the registration continues. Anna University lets a scholar who moves to another university, institution or public sector organisation continue under the same supervisor with the Director (Research)’s approval.
