The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University sets no written entrance for its PhD; a Screening Committee judges your proposal instead, and its affiliated colleges’ recognised departments are the first of four places in Chennai for a health-sciences PhD. The others are the private health-sciences universities Sri Ramachandra (SRIHER) and Chettinad (CARE), which run an entrance test or ask for NET; the University of Madras’s basic medical sciences departments; and ICMR institutes such as NIE and NIRT, reached through a partner university or AcSIR and mostly wanting a fellowship already in hand.
Admissions in other subjects are covered in our Chennai admission guide, and non-medical working scholars should see part-time PhD in Chennai. Last reviewed September 2026.
Doctor, nurse or pharmacist: where can you do a PhD in Chennai?
| Where | Degree from | How you get in | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recognised departments of colleges affiliated to the TN Dr. M.G.R. Medical University | TN Dr. M.G.R. Medical University | Eligibility certificate, then a written proposal defended in person before the university’s Screening Committee. January and July sessions. | Faculty of affiliated colleges; doctors in recognised research centres |
| Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) | SRIHER (deemed) | Online entrance or NET, then interview (October 2026 session prospectus). | Most health disciplines, full-time or part-time |
| Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE) | CARE (deemed) | For 2026–27, NET required in medicine and allied health sciences; NET categories 2 and 3 preferred. | Candidates who already hold NET |
| University of Madras, School of Basic Medical Sciences | University of Madras | Department-level entrance under the university’s Research Regulations. | Basic-science research in physiology, pharmacology, endocrinology and similar fields |
| ICMR National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) | University of Madras, TN Dr. M.G.R. Medical University (epidemiology), or AcSIR | University of Madras schedule, or a separate AcSIR selection. | Epidemiologists and biostatisticians |
| ICMR National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT) | AcSIR (ICMR Faculty of Medical Research) | Research-fellowship holders only, shortlisted and interviewed. | JRF holders interested in TB, HIV-TB and related fields |
If you already teach in an affiliated medical, dental, nursing or pharmacy college, the M.G.R. Medical University route is the natural one: your department may be recognised for research and your seniors may be recognised guides. Outside that system, SRIHER and CARE are simpler to approach. With a JRF and an interest in epidemiology or TB, look at NIE and NIRT first.
Why does the M.G.R. Medical University use a Screening Committee instead of an entrance test?
The Medical University’s published regulations provide for no written entrance of the kind general universities use. Its Ph.D. Regulations 2010, amended by resolutions of its Standing Academic Board up to the 54th meeting, build admission around your proposal, your guide and your institution. The steps, in order:
Eligibility certificate
Apply 16 October to 15 November for the January session, or 16 April to 15 May for July. Fee ₹2,000 plus ₹500 for the form.
Provisional registration application
1 to 31 December for January, 1 to 30 June for July, through your head of department and head of institution. Government doctors route it through the Director of Medical Education.
Write-up and ethics clearance
A 10 to 20 page proposal signed on every page by you and your guide, with the Institutional Ethics Committee clearance attached. Without the clearance the application is treated as incomplete.
Screening Committee
You present the proposal in person. The result is Accepted, Accepted with recommendations, or Not accepted, and you get three chances with the same committee.
Part I Methodology Examination
About a year after registration. Paper I is set by the university and held at its premises; Papers II and III are held at your institution by your guide and advisory committee.
Some details matter. A co-guide is required for every candidate, and is compulsory where your guide is not attached to a recognised research department. For M.Pharm. and M.Sc. Nursing candidates, the guide must hold a PhD. A guide can enrol up to eight candidates and co-guide four more in interdisciplinary work. Candidates in clinical research submit a feasibility report from a pilot study within six months of provisional registration. Fees are charged stage by stage, including ₹5,000 for the Screening Committee and ₹10,000 for provisional registration.
The process is still in use: the university’s notice of 20 July 2026 set the Part I Paper I Methodology Examination for 30 July 2026 in the Senate Hall for candidates registered in July 2025. You need 50% in the theory paper, and you get two attempts.
One caution. The regulations on the university’s website predate the UGC 2022 regulations, and some provisions (such as a two-year full-time minimum for M.D. and M.S. holders) differ from the UGC’s three-year minimum. Ask the university’s research section which provisions apply to your session before you plan your timeline. Our synopsis format guide helps with the write-up.
Who can do an M.G.R. Medical University PhD part-time?
Regulation 13 is short. Teaching faculty of any affiliated institution, and doctors working in recognised research centres, may register part-time. Candidates who are not faculty register full-time. A part-timer who is later relieved from teaching can convert to full-time with the Vice-Chancellor’s approval, but must apply within a year of provisional registration. Part-time scholars owe a contact period of 15 days every six months, 30 days a year, certified through proper channel.
Some eligibility rules are specific to this university:
- MBBS and BDS graduates without a PG degree (and BAMS, BSMS, BUMS, BHMS and BNYS graduates) can register only with two years’ work in a recognised research centre of an affiliated institution, one indexed paper in their research area and a research methodology course at an affiliated institution. It is full-time and four years long.
- Non-medical postgraduates (for example M.Sc. Biotechnology or Microbiology) need 55% in the PG degree and two years’ work experience in an affiliated institution after it, and may research only in their PG subject or allied health sciences.
Full-time scholars can now also compete for the university’s own scholarship. A notification dated 24 September 2026 offers five full-time PhD scholarships in each of the January and July sessions, for up to three years. The published terms set ₹30,000 a month in the first year, ₹40,000 in the second and ₹50,000 in the third, subject to university funds, and require 80% attendance, six-monthly progress reports and one indexed paper before thesis submission.
What do Sri Ramachandra and Chettinad ask for?
SRIHER, the deemed university at Porur, publishes a prospectus each session. For October 2026 the online application closed on 30 July 2026, with the entrance on 17 August and interviews on 18 August. The entrance has 120 multiple-choice questions in two hours: 60 on research methodology for everyone, and 60 answered from a set of 75 in your discipline, with no negative marking. You need 50% to qualify (45% for reserved categories). UGC-NET holders skip the test; for NET category 3 candidates the NET score carries 70% and the interview 30%.
SRIHER also has more categories than most. Entrance qualifiers are considered for the Founder-Chancellor fellowship; others can self-fund. Part-time external scholars need one year of continuous employment, an NOC and 30 days a year with the supervisor, and self-employed consultants can apply on the proposed supervisor’s recommendation with the Dean (Research)’s and Vice-Chancellor’s approval. There is an integrated M.D./M.S.–PhD for residents, opted into within two months of PG admission. The 2026 prospectus lists total fees of ₹2,51,500 for a three-year full-time PhD and ₹3,12,000 for four years part-time.
CARE has changed the question for most applicants. Its 2026–27 eligibility criteria say that, following the UGC’s March 2024 notice on NET, all candidates in medicine and allied health sciences must clear NET (UGC, CSIR, ICMR or DBT), with category 2 and 3 NET candidates preferred. Pharmacy candidates are encouraged, rather than required, to hold NET. Its online application showed admissions closed for 2026–27 when we checked.
Which ICMR institutes in Chennai take PhD scholars?
ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology runs PhDs in epidemiology, biostatistics and microbiology as a University of Madras research institution, with six scientists listed as University of Madras guides. It asks for a PG degree with 55% and follows the University of Madras admission schedule, so the June and December application windows apply. Its School of Public Health says the institute is also recognised for PhD in epidemiology by the M.G.R. Medical University, and NIE separately lists AcSIR selections, including an August 2026 session.
ICMR-National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis admits under AcSIR’s ICMR Faculty of Medical Research. The call is for candidates who already hold a research fellowship from CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT or a similar agency, in TB, its co-morbidities and related clinical, laboratory, social and statistical work. Its academics page carries shortlists for January 2026 and August 2026 sessions.
Basic medical science also has a home at the University of Madras’s School of Basic Medical Sciences, whose departments include anatomy, medical biochemistry, endocrinology, genetics, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and environmental toxicology, and physiology. The university’s Research Regulations make M.D., M.S., M.Pharm., Indian medicine and veterinary PG degrees, and MBBS with two years as a senior house surgeon, eligible for PhD in life and biomedical sciences. Our Chennai admission page explains how its department-level entrance runs, and the University of Madras thesis format guide covers what you submit at the end.
When does ethics approval come into a Chennai health-sciences PhD?
Earlier than many scholars expect. At the M.G.R. Medical University, the Institutional Ethics Committee signs a clearance certificate that is part of the provisional registration form itself, and regulation 12.4 treats a form without it as incomplete. So your proposal, with sample size and consent documents, must be ready for the committee before you are registered. Our guides on sample size calculation and ethics committee approval cover how to prepare those.
SRIHER and CARE set their own sequence in their regulations, so check there when their ethics committee expects your protocol. Wherever you register, no clinical or animal work starts before the approval letter.

FAQ
Questions scholars ask
Can an MBBS doctor without an M.D. do a PhD at the M.G.R. Medical University?
Yes, under a 2017 amendment, if you have worked two years in a recognised research centre of an affiliated institution, published one paper in your research area in an indexed journal and attended a research methodology course at an affiliated institution. The programme is full-time and lasts four years.
Is there a written entrance test for a PhD at the M.G.R. Medical University?
The regulations on its website do not describe one. Selection runs through the eligibility certificate, your proposal and the Screening Committee. The written Part I Methodology Examination comes about a year after registration. Check the current notification for your session in case this has changed.
Can a nurse in Chennai do a PhD part-time?
At the M.G.R. Medical University, yes, if you teach in an affiliated nursing college, and your guide must hold a PhD. At SRIHER, a full-time employee with a year’s continuous service as a teacher, researcher or professional can register as a part-time external scholar with an NOC, spending 30 days a year with the supervisor.
Do I need NET for a health-sciences PhD in Chennai?
Only at some places. Chettinad required it in medicine and allied health sciences for 2026–27, and NIRT’s AcSIR call wants a fellowship. SRIHER accepts either its entrance or NET, and the M.G.R. Medical University’s published regulations do not mention NET at all.
