Part-time PhD in Pune

Which Pune route fits your employer: a university, a deemed university or a defence institute?

My rough rule. With SET, NET or a valid GATE score and a guide near your office who has a vacancy, the SPPU research centre costs least and asks least of your employer. In an R&D team with a PhD on staff, look hard at COEP’s WP category. In a DRDO laboratory, a service or a defence PSU, DIAT is built for you. Symbiosis and MIT-WPU cost more but hold their own entrance tests on a published calendar, which matters while SPPU has no PET scheduled.

Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) is the other large option: its 2026–27 entrance test was on 5 July, with tuition of ₹60,000 or ₹1,00,000 a year by faculty, but its schedule mentions no part-time category, so ask in writing before you pay.

What does SPPU’s Ordinance 186 ask of a part-time scholar?

Very little that is special. The Amended Ordinance 186, issued as Circular 157/2026 on 23 July 2026 for departments, college research centres and recognised institutions alike, gives part-time study three sentences in clause 13: it is allowed if every other condition is met and the research centre collects your employer’s NOC. After that you are treated like any full-time scholar:

• Coursework of 16 credits (clause 8), passed with 55% within two years of registration.
• A presentation to your Research Advisory Committee every semester (clause 9.2).
• No synopsis before 36 months from registration (clause 10.8), and at least one paper in a Scopus or UGC-CARE journal.
• No second degree alongside. Clause 5.10 applies Ordinance 116, which bars registering for another degree course at the same time, so an executive MBA must wait.

Two clauses help people in jobs. Clause 8.9 lets your RAC count SWAYAM, NPTEL and similar courses towards the credits. Clauses 4.2 and 5.8 allow a co-supervisor from another institution, approved by the Research and Recognition Committee, which is how a senior colleague with a PhD can formally join your work. Your main guide must still be permanent faculty at the research centre (clause 4.1). The thesis end of an SPPU PhD is covered in our SPPU thesis format guide.

When does SPPU admit, and can you skip its entrance test?

The last SPPU Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) was notified in July 2024 (Circular 154/2024), with results in September 2024. SPPU has since run that “2024–25 admission process” in rounds. Circular 230/2025 of 30 August 2025 reopened applications for PET-exempted candidates from 1 September 2025 (extended to 13 October) for a ₹1,000 fee. A February 2026 schedule had centres interview from 5 to 20 March 2026 and said the next PET timetable would follow. When we checked the circulars page in September 2026, no new PET had been notified.

So the practical question is whether you are exempt. Clause 3.2(c) exempts UGC-NET (including the lectureship-only NET), CSIR-NET, SET, a valid GATE score and similar national tests, and exempt candidates are selected on a 100-mark interview alone. Three details from the 2025 notification matter to people in industry:

• A CA, CS or ICWA qualification is treated as a postgraduate qualification in the Faculty of Commerce and Management.
• You choose a research centre later, from the vacancies guides have declared, not on the form.
• Reserved-category candidates from outside Maharashtra are treated as Open.

Fees are modest, set by circulars of 2020: tuition of ₹6,500 to ₹12,000 a year by faculty, a ₹6,500 university share, a one-time ₹7,000 coursework fee and smaller heads, with no separate part-time rate (BCUD fee structure).

How does COEP Tech’s PhD for Working Professionals work if COEP allows no part-time PhD?

As a separate category. COEP’s PhD rules, in force from December 2024, state that “Part-time Ph.D. is not allowed as of now”, then create the PhD (WP) programme in section 21, whose 17 clauses override the rest where they conflict. The 2026 brochure repeats them:

• An MTech, MSc, MCA, MBA, MCom or MA, and at least two years in industry, an R&D organisation, a laboratory, an NGO or a bank when you apply.
• GATE, NET, CAT or GMAT is not mandatory. Without one, you sit an entrance test, then a panel with outside experts interviews you.
• You must name a mentor or researcher from industry who holds a PhD to co-supervise the work (Appendix D).
• Research at your workplace is allowed, and coursework can come from SWAYAM, NPTEL or COEP courses.
• The thesis goes in between 48 and 84 months after registration is confirmed.
• No JRF or SRF, and papers, patents and technology transfer are jointly owned by COEP and your organisation.

The rules promise a quarterly admission drive. The 2026 brochure ran a rolling advertisement from 10 March 2026, and the admissions page later invited applications from 3 August 2026. The co-supervisor clause is the real filter: an engineer in a product or R&D team with PhD holders on staff can meet it, most people in services delivery cannot.

Who can register at DIAT Girinagar as an external part-time scholar?

DIAT’s advertisement for the July 2026 batch was addressed to DRDO staff and service officers (MoD-sponsored or self-sponsored), industry-sponsored or self-sponsored candidates, and other government R&D staff. For an external part-time scholar it accepted an ME, MTech or MSc with 55%, a BE or BTech with ten years of research or industrial experience, or sponsorship as a part-time candidate by a government department, PSU or R&D body with at least five years of relevant experience, working on the PhD in the parent organisation and meeting any residence requirement in DIAT’s 2016 PhD regulations.

Selection is a departmental written test and an interview. In 2026 the hard copy was due by 15 May, the test was set for 13 June and the programme was due to start in the first week of July. The 51 indicative vacancies were led by Mechanical Engineering (13) and Computer Science (10). Fees follow the sponsor: ₹50,000 a semester for MoD candidates and ₹65,000 for industry, other government R&D and DPSUs, plus a ₹6,000 admission fee and a ₹20,000 refundable caution deposit.

Do Symbiosis and MIT-WPU expect part-time scholars on campus?

During coursework, Symbiosis does. Its Rules and Procedures for award of Ph.D., 2025 (Notification 1712, approved by the Executive Council on 6 December 2025) let in SIU staff, scientists at SIU’s Centres for Research Collaboration, anyone with a full-time job in education, industry or research (Part-time External), and government research staff. Coursework needs 75% attendance, and the 2025 PhD flyer tells students to “be ready for physical classes on weekdays”, though SIU’s admission-process note calls coursework mostly online with a few weeks offline. Ask the Dean which your batch gets. SIU does not allot supervisors, so you must find one with a vacancy yourself. Applications open once a year, usually in April or May.

MIT-WPU’s programme pages describe full-time and part-time doctorates but publish no separate part-time conditions, so ask for them in writing. Fee circular 07/2026 of 19 February 2026 set ₹1,00,000 tuition a year and a one-time ₹15,000 coursework fee. For automotive engineers, MIT-WPU recognises the ARAI Academy laboratory as a research centre for PhDs in computer, mechanical, and electronics and communication engineering, with the degree from MIT-WPU. Under circular 07-A/2026 ARAI employees pay the ordinary ₹1,00,000 a year; others in that programme pay ₹2,00,000 under “tuition fee for first 2 years” (fee circulars).

What should a Pune professional settle with the employer before applying?

A generic HR letter fits none of these institutions. Collect the right one before applying:

• SPPU research centre: a No Objection Certificate covering clause 13.2’s three points: permission to study part-time, official duties light enough to leave time for research, and release from work for coursework when the centre needs it.
• COEP Tech (WP): the Present Employment Certificate (Appendix C) and Appendix D, signed by your company co-supervisor and listing the facilities you may use. Show your legal team clause 12 of section 21 on jointly owned papers and patents.
• DIAT: Annexure I (NOC, promising lab facilities and time for any coursework residence) and Annexure J (sponsorship, relieving you fully or partly during coursework).
• Symbiosis: the consent letter template in the 2025 rules, and your manager’s agreement to weekday coursework classes.
