PhD in agriculture in Coimbatore: TNAU and the city’s institutes

TNAU’s doctoral rules, how the ICAR entrance fits, and Coimbatore’s other agriculture and forestry routes.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) sets its own PhD entrance and then decides both your college and your guide: your rank places you in one of its constituent colleges, which may not be in Coimbatore, and the Dean of its School of Post Graduate Studies (SPGS) appoints the guide. The programme is full-time and residential for three years, and open only to candidates with a four-year farm-science degree and a matching master’s with an OGPA of 7.00. The national ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) examination is a separate, fellowship-linked route into the same university system.

Coimbatore also has ICAR and forestry institutes that take PhD scholars through other universities: IFGTB (the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding), the ICAR Sugarcane Breeding Institute and SACON. Last reviewed September 2026.

Who can apply for a TNAU PhD?

TNAU’s School of Post Graduate Studies offers 28 doctoral programmes, from Agronomy, Soil Science and Genetics and Plant Breeding to Nematology, Sericulture, Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Forestry and Food and Nutrition. Section 4 of the PG Rules and Regulations 2025 (sixth edition, October 2025) sets the entry conditions:

  • A four-year farm-science bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Sericulture, B.Tech. Agricultural Engineering and similar, as listed programme by programme).
  • A two-year master’s degree in the matching subject, from a State Agricultural University, an ICAR institute, a Central Agricultural University or a government-aided agricultural college.
  • An OGPA of at least 7.00 out of 10 in the master’s degree.
  • Three years you can spend in residence. The minimum is six semesters, with at least 80% attendance in every course.

Two consequences surprise applicants. First, a note to the eligibility table says the basic degree “should be a Farm Science and allied subjects”, so a B.Sc. and M.Sc. Botany or Zoology graduate is outside TNAU’s doctoral pool even for subjects like Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Second, the rules list degrees awarded by State Agricultural Universities, ICAR institutes, Central Agricultural Universities and government-aided agricultural colleges. If your master’s is from a private deemed university, confirm your eligibility with SPGS in writing before paying the fee.

For 2026–27, TNAU posted “Applications are invited for TNAU Doctoral degree programme” on 17 September 2026, and the SPGS portal showed doctoral applications open. When we checked on 27 September, the portal’s own table of important dates still showed the 2024 cycle, so go by the current notification and the emails sent to your registered address, not that table.

How does TNAU decide your college and your guide?

This is where TNAU differs most from a general university. You do not pick a supervisor and apply to them.

  • Campus. Clause 5.1 allots selected candidates to TNAU’s constituent colleges “based on rank obtained in the entrance examination and communal rotation”, and says a request for campus transfer “shall not be considered for any reasons”. A Coimbatore applicant may be placed at a college in another district.
  • Guide. Under clause 12.1 the Dean of SPGS appoints the chairperson of your advisory committee on the recommendation of the Head of the Department, who distributes new scholars among the recognised guides. For a doctoral scholar the chairperson must be a Professor (clause 12.3.1) and must have at least three years of service left.
  • Committee. The chairperson and four members: one from your discipline and three from related departments. The Head of the Department proposes it within a month of the first semester through the university’s Academic Management System portal.
  • Load. A faculty member may chair five advisory committees and sit on five more at any time, although the rules say the limit may not apply to teachers who pay fellowships from their own externally funded schemes.

That last point is the one real lever you have. A student fellow on an externally funded project can be allotted to the project’s Principal Investigator as chairperson, subject to the Dean’s approval (clause 27.4). In our experience, emailing professors before admission to “book” a guide achieves little at TNAU. Time is better spent on the entrance and on reading what each department has published, so you can state a clear research interest when the Head of the Department allots guides.

The three years themselves are set out in clause 15.1: 100 credits, of which 25 are coursework (12 major, 6 minor, 5 supporting and 2 for seminars) and 75 are thesis research. You also take five compulsory non-credit PGS courses if your master’s did not include them. Budget for fees as well: clause 6 says the fee structure is revised every year with a 10 per cent increase.

How does the ICAR entrance fit in with TNAU admission?

The ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.), run by the National Testing Agency, is the national examination for doctoral admission with a fellowship across the ICAR-Agricultural University system of 74 universities, which includes the state agricultural universities. For 2026–27 it was held on 4 July 2026 at 162 centres, and the NTA’s press release of 29 August 2026 reported 11,491 registrations and 10,417 candidates who appeared. How ICAR fellowships work is covered in our fellowships guide.

TNAU’s PG rules say nothing about how many of its doctoral seats go to ICAR-ranked candidates, and we could not open ICAR’s 2026 information bulletin: the file on the NTA site was damaged when we tried it. If you have an AICE-JRF/SRF rank and want TNAU, follow the ICAR counselling notices and ask SPGS how your rank is treated.

Inside TNAU, money comes from other sources too. Clause 27.4 provides student research fellowships from externally funded schemes for 20 months of a PhD, with priority to NET-qualified students and selection on your OGPA in TNAU, not your earlier degree. A scholar holding a CSIR, INSPIRE, UGC or ICSSR fellowship keeps it to the viva, but must stay on campus and sign attendance between thesis submission and viva. Teaching assistants take up to 16 classes a month. For state-government money, see our guide to Tamil Nadu fellowships.

Can a block agricultural officer keep the job and do a TNAU PhD?

No, not under these rules. They describe a “regular doctoral program” with a minimum residence of six semesters within 14 (clause 8.2), 80% attendance in each course (clause 10.1) and no part-time category. A block agricultural officer or a seed-company agronomist would have to take leave for the whole residence period.

Working graduates in Coimbatore usually look elsewhere:

  • Bharathiar University, which lists the Sugarcane Breeding Institute among its recognised research institutes and allows part-time registration for employees with two years’ experience after the master’s. Our guide to finding a Bharathiar supervisor in Coimbatore sets out its categories and attendance rules.
  • Karunya in Karunya Nagar, whose research admissions page invites full-time and part-time PhD applicants and lists a PhD in Agriculture.

Agricultural engineers with a B.E. or M.E. have a third option: Anna University, covered in our engineering PhD page for Coimbatore.

Where in Coimbatore can a botany or zoology postgraduate do a plant-science or forestry PhD?

Outside TNAU, at the national institutes and at Karunya. Several of them take PhD scholars, but only Karunya awards its own degree.

Coimbatore routes to an agriculture, forestry or ecology PhD outside TNAU, from each institute’s own pages (checked 27 September 2026)
Institute in CoimbatoreWho awards the PhDHow you get in
ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding InstituteBharathiar University (recognised research institute); also an Anna University R&D centre until June 2028Bharathiar’s CET and interview, with a recognised scientist there as supervisor
Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB)Forest Research Institute (deemed university), Dehradun; IFGTB is one of its nodal centresFRI’s doctoral application; a PG in forestry, agriculture or, for several subjects, botany or zoology
SACON (ornithology and natural history)Bharathiar University, Saurashtra University or Manipal Academy of Higher EducationOnly with assured funding, such as a SACON project post or a UGC, CSIR or INSPIRE fellowship; then each university’s own process
Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, School of Agricultural SciencesKarunya (deemed university)Written test and interview; its 2026–27 vacancy list names guides in horticulture, plant breeding, soil science, entomology and agribusiness

The Sugarcane Breeding Institute appears on both Bharathiar’s recognised research institutes list and Anna University’s R&D centre list. Under Anna University a scientist there can supervise only if a university-department or constituent-college supervisor is added as joint supervisor (clause 7.5 of its 2025 regulations).

IFGTB is a nodal centre of the Forest Research Institute, which awards the degree. Its subject table is more open than TNAU’s: Silviculture and Forest Seed Technology accept a PG in forestry, agriculture or botany, and Forest Entomology accepts zoology with an entomology specialisation. For a Botany M.Sc. who cannot enter TNAU, this is the most direct plant-science route in Coimbatore.

SACON says on its academics page that it registers PhD scholars only with assured funding, and that Bharathiar registration needs the university’s CET first. Karunya publishes a vacancy list for 2026–27 naming each guide and specialisation, which is more than TNAU or the national institutes publish.

FAQ

Questions scholars ask

Can I choose my guide at TNAU?

Not directly. The Head of the Department recommends and the Dean of SPGS appoints the chairperson of your advisory committee (clause 12.1). The main exception is a student fellowship on a funded project, where the project’s Principal Investigator may become your chairperson.

Does the TNAU fee stay the same through the PhD?

No. Clause 6 of the 2025 rules says the fee structure is revised every year with a 10 per cent increase, so budget for a higher fee in each year of residence.

Will I study in Coimbatore if TNAU admits me?

Not necessarily. Colleges are allotted by entrance rank and communal rotation, and campus transfer requests are not considered (clause 5.1).

How long does a TNAU PhD take?

At least three academic years of residence, and no more than seven from admission (clause 8.2). Failing to finish within seven years cancels the admission.
