Why does KAU rank its own PhD applicants on the ICAR exam mark?

TNAU in Coimbatore fills its own seats through a university test and leaves the all-India seats to ICAR. KAU keeps the same two queues but uses one exam for both. Section 8(b) of the 2026–27 prospectus says Ph.D. selection “will be based on the ICAR Entrance examination (AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D)) conducted for the academic session 2026-27”. So a Thrissur graduate who wants only a KAU seat still has to sit the NTA’s ICAR paper.

KAU then builds its rank list out of 100:

• 75 marks from the ICAR (or KAU) entrance mark;
• 15 marks from your master’s grade;
• 10 marks for publications, at 1 mark for a refereed research paper, book or book chapter, 0.5 for a full seminar paper or research note, and 0.25 for a popular article, abstract or poster.

Ten marks sounds small. In Agricultural Meteorology, with one KAU seat on the campus, two refereed papers from your M.Sc. can decide it, so upload the proof with the application.

The exceptions are Community Science (Food and Nutrition) and Rural Marketing Management, for which KAU sets an objective test with a 50% qualifying mark. In the 2026–27 cycle it was held on 24 September 2026 at the old headquarters building in Vellanikkara.

How large is the ICAR share? The prospectus and the Academic Handbook 2023 say 30% of PG and Ph.D. seats; KAU’s Admissions web page says 25%. The 2026–27 seat matrix follows the 30% figure (49 of 161). Unfilled ICAR seats go to the KAU rank list, and leftover seats are filled by a “rolling admission” at the start of the even semester (Handbook clause 5).

How many PhD seats are there at Vellanikkara, and in which subjects?

Vellanikkara, about 12 km from Thrissur town, is KAU’s main campus: the College of Agriculture (57 Ph.D. seats in 2026–27), the College of Forestry (10) and the College of Co-operation, Banking & Management (2). Vellayani near Thiruvananthapuram has 68, Padannakkad in Kasaragod 7, and Tavanur in Malappuram the 17 agricultural engineering seats.

Note Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, where Vellanikkara has more ICAR seats (3) than KAU seats (2). And an ICAR rank does not by itself put you here: the prospectus allots ICAR candidates to colleges “considering their option and the availability of faculty for research guidance”.

For KAU seats, allotment follows your choice list. You rank colleges and disciplines on the admissions portal, and the list locks at the deadline. If Vellanikkara matters more to you than your first subject, order it that way. Before applying, check:

• An ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D.) score card for the same admission year, in the subject group ICAR prescribes for your KAU discipline. Without it you are not ranked, except in Community Science and Rural Marketing Management.
• A four-year bachelor’s and a two-year master’s from an ICAR-accredited university, with the bachelor’s in the same faculty (agriculture, forestry or agricultural engineering) as the PhD.
• A master’s OGPA of at least 7.00 on the ten-point scale, or 60% under a marks system (6.50 or 55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates).
• The application fee: ₹1,500 (₹750 for Kerala SC and ST, and PwD candidates).
• Choices filled on the portal after the provisional rank list. Skip this and you drop out of every later round.

The 2026–27 notification (No. KAUEDU/1091/2026-EDU B1) opened applications on 22 July 2026 with a closing date of 20 August, later extended to 6 September, and the portal reopened from 15 to 17 September. That is one year’s pattern, not a calendar. Students from outside Kerala are limited to 10% of KAU’s PG and Ph.D. seats.

What does a KAU PhD cost, and what does the university pay you?

KAU’s fee order of 11 September 2026 (No. KAUEDU/1942/2025-EDU B2) fixes the fees for the whole programme of a scholar admitted in 2026–27:

• At admission, once: ₹3,300 admission fee and a refundable ₹5,500 college caution deposit.
• Every semester: ₹32,980 in semesters 1 and 2, ₹33,390 in semesters 3 and 4, and ₹33,825 in semesters 5 and 6. Tuition is ₹24,750 of each; the rest is examination and special fees.
• If you are from outside Kerala, a further refundable ₹3,000 caution deposit (prospectus, section 15).

Over six semesters that comes to about ₹2.09 lakh, including the refundable deposit. The two documents differ slightly: Annexure III of the July prospectus puts the first-semester total at ₹41,580, while the September order gives ₹8,800 plus ₹32,980 (₹41,780), the gap being in the special fees. Budget on the later order.

KAU pays its own Senior Fellowship. An order issued after the 132nd Academic Council (28 September 2018) raised it from ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 a month from 2018–19. For research costs, the latest figure we found is the 2014 order that set a contingency grant of ₹1,00,000 per Ph.D. scholar for 2013–14; we found no later revision on KAU’s site, so ask your college. The Handbook pays the fellowship only to full-time scholars drawing no other fellowship, for six semesters or until thesis submission. A separate 2018 order opened it to every scholar “admitted through the KAU entrance examination”, whatever their domicile.

Honestly, ₹4,000 a month does not support a scholar in Thrissur. For 2026–27 the prospectus lists something larger: six KERA Ph.D. fellowships under the World Bank-supported programme on low-emission rice systems, which KAU co-leads with IRRI. Each pays ₹30,000 a month for three years and includes a six-month research stay abroad. Five are at Vellanikkara, in agronomy, soil science and agricultural chemistry, agricultural extension and agricultural meteorology, and one is in agricultural economics at Vellayani. Can a Krishi Bhavan officer or a KAU employee do the PhD while employed?

There are three routes, and none is an evening programme.

• Sponsored seats. The prospectus admits candidates sponsored by the Government of Kerala over and above the intake, subject to faculty and facilities. Sponsors include development departments, commodity boards and national research institutions. You apply through your employer with a sponsorship and experience certificate, and the sponsor or you pay the costs. For an Agricultural Officer, the department’s deputation decides whether you can go.
• Part-time registration. Handbook clause 18 sets a minimum of ten semesters for a part-time Ph.D., at least two of them spent in the college as a full-time student, and a limit of 12 semesters. Clause 10(i) allows part-time registration only after coursework is finished. Clause 10(l) opens this to employees of national institutions if KAU recognises the institute, coursework is done at KAU and a scientist there co-guides alongside a KAU major advisor. Part-time scholars get no KAU fellowship.
• KAU’s own staff. KAU teachers can register part-time while on study leave for coursework, and apply with a No Objection Certificate from the Registrar. The Handbook adds that “as far as possible, in-service candidates may join another University”.

Settle the deputation or leave first, then apply. The Handbook charges a ₹25,000 caution deposit for extra joining time, and ₹25,000 plus KAU’s actual costs if you leave the programme for good.

What does KAU require before you can submit the thesis?

The Academic Handbook 2023 sets the frame:

• Credits. 77 in all: 32 of coursework (15 major, 8 minor, 7 supporting and two one-credit seminars) and 45 of research.
• Major advisor. Appointed by the Head of the Institution on the Head of Department’s recommendation, by rotation and with regard to your research interest. The advisor needs a Ph.D., one M.Sc. student guided to completion and three years of service left, and normally guides no more than six M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.
• Comprehensive examination. From 2022 admissions, an oral examination by one external expert.
• Time. A minimum of six semesters and a maximum of ten. An extension beyond the maximum costs ₹25,000 a semester (₹15,000 for SC and ST scholars).

The publication rule is the one to plan for from the first year. For admissions from 2019 onwards, you may submit the thesis only with proof that two papers from your research are accepted or published. In the sciences one needs a NAAS rating of 4.5 or more and the other 5 or more; in the social sciences both need 3.5. One of the two may be a short communication, a review or a book chapter. NAAS-5 journals are slow, so write the first paper from second-year data.

Where else in Thrissur district can you do a forestry or veterinary PhD?

Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi. KFRI does not award degrees. Its PhD programme page registers scholars with the University of Calicut (botany, zoology), CUSAT (environmental sciences, biotechnology) or FRI University, Dehradun (forestry subjects such as silviculture and forest pathology). You need a first-class master’s and funding: a KFRI project fellowship of at least three years, or a UGC, CSIR or DBT fellowship. You present a topic to KFRI’s Research Advisory Committee, then apply to the university. KFRI charges a ₹2,000 caution deposit and ₹2,500 a year, in addition to university fees. Botany postgraduates, who are outside KAU’s agriculture doctorate, should look here first.

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU), Mannuthy. Veterinary doctorates sit in this separate university. Its Ph.D. programme page asks for a master’s with an OGPA of 7.5 (7.0 for SC and ST). Unlike KAU, KVASU sets its own entrance test and interview, with a 40% minimum in the test (30% for SC and ST). Seats are also reserved for ICAR and for Animal Husbandry Department sponsorees. The page is undated, so check it against the current notification.
