Engineering PhD in Thiruvananthapuram: KTU, IIST or NIIST

Which four bodies award an engineering PhD in Thiruvananthapuram?

Five routes appear below. With the University of Kerala closed to engineers this session, four bodies are awarding the degree.

The KTU route is the only one that runs through colleges. The institutes admit on their own terms and give their own degrees, and each is covered in more detail on our research institutes in Thiruvananthapuram page. Most engineers with an MTech from a Kerala college will start with KTU, so that is where most of this page goes.

How did KTU’s PhD entrance and exemptions work in 2025–26?

The latest KTU PhD notification we could open is the 2025–26 notification of 30 April 2025. KTU’s website did not let us read a 2026–27 notice, so treat the dates below as last year’s pattern and check the portal before you plan.

   Apply on the KTU portal

   In 2025–26 the window ran from 1 to 31 May 2025, with a fee of ₹1,100 (₹550 for SC and ST applicants).

   Sit the entrance test

   Held on 20 June 2025 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Thrissur and Kannur: 35 marks of research aptitude and 35 of subject questions, with negative marking.

   Clear 35 of 70

   Half marks in the test takes you to a 30-mark interview, where you need 12, and 50 of 100 overall.

   Find a supervisor and a place

   Passing does not register you. A recognised supervisor at a KTU research centre must accept you and the Doctoral Committee must recommend you.

Who could apply

An ME or MTech (or a master’s in applied or basic sciences, computer applications or management) needed a CGPA of 5.75; a BTech or BArch holder needed 7.75. SC, ST, OBC non-creamy layer, EWS and disabled candidates needed 5.25 and 7.25. If your university gives percentages with no conversion rule, KTU converts them as CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.25, so 55% counts as 5.75. Basic-science postgraduates also need a co-guide from a sister institution or research organisation willing to lend its laboratories.

Who skipped the test, fully or partly

• Interview only: UGC-NET holders in all three categories (Category 2 and 3 scores count for a year), and valid GATE or CEED scores.
• Straight to admission: teachers selected under the Quality Improvement Programme. AICTE Doctoral Fellowship candidates are admitted under a separate notice.
• Part A only, scaled to 70: KSCSTE fellowship holders and MPhil holders with the minimum CGPA.
• Part A and one subject section: teachers in KTU-affiliated colleges with five years as Assistant Professor or above in AICTE-approved institutions, for part-time registration only.

In our experience the subject paper is where applicants lose marks. Engineering candidates must attempt the mathematics section, and your own area carries double marks with double negative marking, so answer only what you are sure of there.

After KTU’s test, where in the city do you find a supervisor?

KTU’s notification is blunt: the entrance and interview “alone will not ensure PhD registration”. You must identify a supervisor and a place of research that meet KTU’s research regulations. Three city colleges publish what they offer:

• Government Engineering College, Barton Hill calls itself an approved KTU research centre on its home page. Its research site lists speech and biomedical signal processing and solid-state devices in ECE, composite materials in mechanical, network security, IoT and LLM applications in IT, and power-system and microgrid protection in EEE.
• LBS Institute of Technology for Women, Poojappura, says on its research page that it is an approved KTU research centre for civil, computer, electronics and mechanical engineering. Its completed theses include deep-learning diagnosis of paediatric heart disease, air-quality forecasting and image forensics.
• Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology, Nalanchira, an autonomous college whose degrees are awarded by KTU, lists ten research supervisors on its PhD page: two in civil, three in CSE, four in EEE and one in ECE.

We could not find a current research-centre list on the College of Engineering Trivandrum’s website. If CET is your first choice, ask its research office which departments host KTU scholars now.

Before you commit, ask each supervisor two questions: how many scholars they already guide, and when their last scholar submitted. A guide whose scholars finish is worth a longer bus ride.

Can a working engineer register part-time with KTU, even from across the border?

Under the 2025–26 notification, part-time registration was open to faculty of KTU’s departments and affiliated colleges and to people “working with industry / organisations within the country”. A Technopark engineer qualifies, subject to a no-objection certificate in KTU’s format from the appointing authority. That format commits you to attend the regular classes of your coursework, so plan leave for that semester.

The phrase “within the country” matters for scholars around Parassala, Marthandam and Nagercoil. Anna University’s part-time external category needs an employer within Tamil Nadu (see the Kanyakumari-side engineering routes). KTU’s notification set no such state limit, so an engineer employed on the Tamil Nadu side can look at a KTU research centre in Thiruvananthapuram. The research itself is still done at a KTU college, not at your workplace.

Money is where part-timers lose out. KTU’s fellowship is for full-time scholars only, and the Directorate of Technical Education’s higher-education scholarship, which the notification mentions, is for full-time scholars in government engineering colleges such as GEC Barton Hill. When is IIST, NIIST or SCTIMST a better fit than KTU?

IIST suits a GATE-qualified engineer whose interest is aerospace or avionics. Its July 2026 notification listed aerospace areas from combustion and flight mechanics to composites and additive manufacturing, and avionics areas from power electronics and RF systems to MEMS and guidance, navigation and control. An ME or MTech needed 60% plus GATE, NET or IIST’s own screening test. A BTech needed 75% and GATE, unless it came from an IIT or IIST with a CGPA of 7.5, in which case the screening test replaced GATE. BTech entrants also take extra coursework.

CSIR-NIIST is the place for an engineer without a fellowship whose work fits its process, food, environment or materials research. Its AcSIR eligibility sheet accepts an MTech with 55% or a BTech with 75%, and names self-sponsored candidates among those eligible in engineering.

SCTIMST takes engineers into its bioengineering PhD at the BMT wing. Its January 2027 prospectus lists postgraduates in biomedical, electronics and communication, electrical, instrumentation, polymer and computer engineering, among others, as eligible, and runs a joint PhD in Biomedical Devices and Technology with IIT Madras, for which IIT Madras sets the tests. Its application window for January 2027 ran through September 2026 (1st to 30th), and it holds PhD selections each June and November.

Can you still register for an engineering PhD at the University of Kerala?

Not this session. The university’s July 2026 vacancy list puts “all subjects under the Faculty of Engineering & Technology” among the subjects with no vacancies, which means no online registration in them.

Some neighbouring subjects did have places: Computer Science under Applied Sciences and Technology (8), Optoelectronics (4), Technology Management (2) and Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (1). An electronics or computer engineer with GATE could look at these. The July 2026 notification exempts GATE holders from the entrance test and took applications from 1 to 15 July 2026; anyone registered there writes to the University of Kerala’s thesis format. Part-time applicants now also file an affidavit along with the employer’s no-objection certificate, under a university order of 24 June 2026.
