Research institutes in Thiruvananthapuram for a PhD

Which Thiruvananthapuram institutes take PhD scholars, and whose degree will you get?

The first five institutes run their own selection and publish calls. The last three work through scientists who hold university guideship.

Check the campus column before you choose. IISER (Vithura) and IIST (Valiamala) are well outside the city, as is JNTBGRI at Palode, which matters if you plan to live at home.

• 1 to 30 September 2026: SCTIMST’s online application window for its January 2027 PhD session.
• 5 October 2026: closing date of IISER Thiruvananthapuram’s School of Biology call, with an online interview planned for 9 October.
• 31 October 2026: last date on AcSIR’s January 2027 admission notice, which covers CSIR-NIIST.
• 13 and 16 November 2026: SCTIMST’s PhD written test and PhD interview for January 2027, on the dates its prospectus gives.
• January 2027: SCTIMST and AcSIR scholars join. IIST also admits in January, but no January call was out when we checked.

What did IISER Thiruvananthapuram’s two 2026 PhD calls ask for?

IISER Thiruvananthapuram calls its August semester “Varsha”, and in 2026 it ran two calls for it.

The main Varsha 2026 advertisement (open 20 March to 20 April 2026) covered the Schools of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Data Sciences and Earth, Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, plus two research centres. It asked for a 6.5 CGPA or first class in the master’s (50% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) and CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF in Category I, II or III, GATE or another listed test. IISER, IIT and IISc graduates with a CGPA of 8 were exempt from the test requirement. Schools added their own rules: GATE in Ecology and Evolution counted only for ecology and behaviour, for example. Most interviews were in May; biology held an online round in June and an in-person round in July.

The second call, published on 25 September 2026 for a session starting in October, is far narrower: the School of Biology alone, and only CSIR or UGC JRF holders in Category I, with DBT-JRF Category I and ICMR-JRF accepted if tenable at IISER. A NET Category II or III result that was enough in March is not enough now.

That window ran for only ten days, 25 September to 5 October 2026. IISER’s short extra calls are easy to miss, so a life-science JRF should check its admission portal every week.

Can you get into an IIST PhD without a JRF?

Yes, and that sets IIST apart. Under its July 2026 notification, candidates with a valid CSIR or UGC-NET, NBHM, JEST or GATE result went straight to interview, with no fellowship needed. ME and MTech holders without such a score, and IIT or IIST BTech graduates with a CGPA of 7.5, could instead sit a one-hour objective screening test at Valiamala on 29 June 2026; departments set the cut-off, and the interview needed 60% (55% for reserved categories). Science and humanities master’s holders still needed a national test.

• Seven departments: Aerospace Engineering, Avionics, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. You may apply to four research areas at most.
• Money: IIST-funded scholars received ₹37,000 a month, rising to ₹42,000 after a two-year review. Holders of CSIR, UGC, NBHM or state science fellowships draw those instead, and IIST does not step in if the agency stops paying.
• Fees: ₹24,200 for the first semester, including hostel, admission fee and caution deposit, then ₹17,700 a semester. SC, ST and PwD scholars pay no tuition.
• Conditions: age below 35 on 25 May 2026, up to six hours a week of tutorials or lab work, and a no-objection certificate for government and PSU employees.

How do RGCB and SCTIMST choose biomedical PhD scholars?

RGCB, Poojappura

RGCB’s website still lists the University of Kerala, Manipal, MG University and the Kerala University of Health Sciences among its affiliations, which is how earlier batches registered. The August 2026 call says new scholars are registered at RCB instead. It asked for a postgraduate degree with 60%, a national JRF valid for five years, and age below 28, relaxed by five years for SC, ST, PwD and women applicants and three for OBC.

Selection had three levels at the main campus: research aptitude, subject knowledge, then a laboratory rotation, with free hostel rooms for outstation candidates, before each scholar named a lab. The call listed ten projects with one place each. Fees add up: RGCB charges ₹5,000 a semester for the first ten semesters and ₹10,000 after that, and RCB adds ₹5,000 a semester until the open defence.

SCTIMST

SCTIMST awards its own PhD in the physical, chemical, biological and biomedical sciences, bioengineering, biomaterials, health sciences and medical sciences. Its January 2027 prospectus sets these rules:

• Two selections a year, in June for July and in November for January. The July round is only for fellowship holders and SCTIMST’s own MPhil graduates.
• A written test for most. UGC, CSIR, ICMR and DBT JRF holders go straight to interview. KSCSTE JRF and INSPIRE holders sit the test, as do SRF holders from any source.
• A proposal with the application: about 1,000 words, plus a statement of purpose of 300 to 500 words.
• Six institute fellowships a year at DST rates, with a bond to repay at least six months’ fellowship if you leave after the first month.
• Selection is not registration. You still have to persuade a recognised guide, who weighs slots, grants and your funding.

Which routes into CSIR-NIIST does AcSIR allow?

NIIST’s AcSIR page says it admits for January and August sessions. Its eligibility sheet lists three ways in for a science PhD: a national fellowship (CSIR, UGC, DBT, INSPIRE, RGNF and similar), a temporary project post at the institute, or employer sponsorship with a no-objection certificate. The engineering PhD adds a fourth, self-sponsored, so an MTech graduate with no fellowship has a way in here as well as at IIST.

Project assistants must have worked a year on a sanctioned project and apply with the permission of their project leader and the Director. Without a national test result they need a filed patent or an SCI journal paper; NET Category 2 or 3, GATE, BET or JEST replaces that.

The first-semester fee was ₹14,000, or ₹28,000 for sponsored candidates. If you want NIIST without a JRF, the eligibility sheet points to a year as a project associate on a sanctioned project, ideally with a paper or a filed patent to show for it.

How do you join NCESS, JNTBGRI or the Space Physics Laboratory, which have no admission test?

These three run no PhD programme of their own. You arrive with funding, find a scientist who is a recognised guide, and register with that university. For most scholars it is the University of Kerala, whose July 2026 registration notification lets scientists in central or state laboratories within its jurisdiction supervise, with Grades C and D counting as Assistant Professor (four scholars), E as Associate Professor (six) and F and G as Professor (eight). UGC-NET, CSIR or DBT JRF, INSPIRE, SLET, GATE and VSSC-JRF holders, among others, skip its entrance test, and registration opens in January and July. • NCESS, Akkulam. Its FAQ says NET-qualified postgraduates join recognised guides, with stipends from CSIR, a university or the institute’s projects, and should contact a supervisor directly. Its research staff list includes MoES, INSPIRE, CSIR, UGC and KSCSTE fellows.
• JNTBGRI, Palode. CSIR-JRF, INSPIRE and KSCSTE fellowship holders contact the Director to find a guide; its scientists are guides at universities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and research students pay no bench fee. ICAR-CTCRI at Sreekariyam, by contrast, charges its PhD students ₹15,000 plus GST a semester, halved for EWS, SC, ST, OBC and women students.
• Space Physics Laboratory, VSSC. Advertisement 339 of April 2026 offered eight JRF positions to physics and atmospheric science postgraduates with CSIR-UGC NET (lectureship included), GATE or JEST, at ₹37,000 a month, renewable each year to a total of five, and ₹42,000 as SRF after two. The age limit was 28. It names no degree-awarding university, so ask at interview.

The order is fellowship, then guide, then registration in the next January or July window. A scholar who wins a KSCSTE fellowship can settle a JNTBGRI guide first and register afterwards.
