Bharathiar, Anna University, TNAU or a deemed university: whose thesis rules apply in Coimbatore?

The rules follow the degree, not the building. A lab at a Coimbatore engineering college can host Anna University scholars. The Sugarcane Breeding Institute and SACON are both recognised research institutes of Bharathiar, and they register scholars under Bharathiar’s rules. So check which body’s name will be on your certificate. Then read that body’s own document.

Bharathiar gives no exemption from its page cap. A long results chapter has to be cut, not argued for. Anna University wants a complete first draft at the synopsis meeting, so its real deadline is earlier than it looks. What does Bharathiar University check before it accepts a Coimbatore thesis?

Most of the checking happens at the synopsis. It goes to the Centre for Research and Evaluation (CRE) in the Controller of Examinations building on the Bharathiar campus. Your synopsis won’t be accepted without the items below. That’s from the university’s 2025–26 PhD regulations (clause 18.2) and the CRE’s synopsis checklist:

• the Certificate of Genuineness of Research Publication, with the first page of your published paper attached;
• your supervisor’s panel of examiners in a sealed cover: one panel of four to six from abroad and one from India, with each examiner’s consent letter;
• reports of your two Doctoral Committee meetings, and the synopsis fee (₹6,000 on the checklist).

The checklist asks for four soft-bound synopsis copies (six for Tamil). The regulations still say six for everyone. Ask CRE which one holds.

Before submission you present the work at a pre-PhD session in your department. Any faculty member or research student may attend, and you work their comments into the draft. Your Doctoral Committee also signs a certificate on the quality of your research and papers. CRE will not process a thesis without it. The thesis title must match the synopsis title exactly. And clause 18.2(f) lets you include your published papers or manuscripts with the thesis, which helps when the 275-page cap is tight.

Next come the online thesis instructions. They ask for a file below 10 MB, three signed certificates, a no-due certificate, a CD and a fee receipt. The receipt is for ₹18,000 on the undated sheet, so confirm it. A Tamil thesis needs an English translation appended. Every scholar is also encouraged to leave a Tamil synopsis in the library. How do Anna University’s thesis rules apply at PSG Tech, CIT, KCT and other Coimbatore centres?

Look at the Centre for Research’s list of approved research institutions. It includes Government College of Technology, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Kumaraguru College of Technology and Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College. Dozens of other colleges in and around the city are on it too, and so is Anna University’s Coimbatore regional office. Your college’s research coordinator forwards the paperwork. But the rules come from Chennai, and they’re the same at every centre.

Here’s what that means for you as a Coimbatore engineering scholar, from Regulations R2025 and two CFR circulars:

• Use the official template, unchanged. CFR’s template circular offers both a LaTeX template and a Word one, AUCFR-thesistemplate.dotx, and forbids changes to the format.
• Count pages the way CFR counts them. A circular of 22 June 2022 says the 100 to 400 pages are the main content only. Theses that reached 100 pages by adding appendices were being returned.
• Finish before the synopsis meeting. Clause 16.6 has you bring the completed first draft of the thesis to the Doctoral Committee meeting that approves your synopsis. The synopsis itself stays within 15 pages, publication list included.
• Then move within 90 days. Clause 17.2 gives you 90 days from that approval for the hard copy. It goes in with an English abstract and a Tamil abstract, each about 400 words. Up to six months is possible, but only with the Director (Research)’s prior approval and a late fee.
• Bind in your papers. Clause 17.5 puts up to five of your published papers inside the thesis. They must be from journals on CFR’s list. The similarity-index page of your plagiarism report goes in as well.

What do TNAU, Amrita, Karunya and Avinashilingam add to the thesis process?

TNAU. TNAU’s 2025 rulebook for postgraduate programmes (see the SPGS rules page) counts the thesis as 75 of the 100 credits in a doctoral programme. A chairperson and four advisory committee members guide it. The rulebook sets no page count or layout. It sets paperwork. You must also download 50 research articles through CeRA for the literature review, and file a signed, bound set with the Professor and Head. Then there’s the enclosure list (form SPGS PF 20) that goes with the thesis. It includes an English abstract and a one-page statement of research findings in English and Tamil. It also has the anti-plagiarism certificate, and a certificate that you used reference management software for the thesis and papers. Two paper-pack copies go to the Dean (SPGS), and two external experts evaluate the work. After the public defence, the corrected thesis comes back in hard-bound copies with two CDs. A PDF goes to the Shodhganga and Krishikosh repositories.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Under the 2024 PhD policy, two open seminars come before the synopsis. They are advertised across all campuses a week ahead. The synopsis of about 12 pages goes to two external examiners, one of them international. The thesis follows within 45 days of Doctoral Committee approval.

Avinashilingam Institute. The July 2024 regulations have a format table of their own. It sets 1.5 line spacing and Times New Roman at 10 to 12 points. Preliminary pages are in roman numerals, the abstract is no more than 350 words, and the whole thesis is 250 pages. Before submission you give a draft thesis presentation to the Doctoral Committee, open to all faculty and scholars. A Tamil thesis needs prior permission.

Karunya Institute. The 2023 regulations add a format check. A senior faculty member, nominated by the head of department, looks at the layout, contents and presentation before submission. You then correct any deviation with your supervisor.

• Bharathiar scholars: we work back from the synopsis, which has to reach CRE about three months before the thesis. We watch the 275-page count from the first chapter on. • Engineering scholars registered with Anna University through PSG Tech, CIT, KCT or another centre: every chapter review has to finish before your synopsis Doctoral Committee meeting. The complete draft is due that day. The 90 days after it are for the Committee’s corrections and a layout pass in the CFR template.
• TNAU scholars: your timetable is the semester. We aim to finish reviews before the last day of your final semester, so you aren’t paying into the grace period.
• Amrita scholars: the synopsis and the thesis are 45 days apart. So your thesis chapters need to be nearly final when the synopsis goes to the Doctoral Committee.

Tamil text stays with you. Write the Tamil abstract for Anna University and the Tamil findings page for TNAU from your final English version. So we settle the English first.
