Who is eligible for a Bharathiar University PhD?

You need a master’s degree with 55% (grade B on the UGC seven-point scale). It must have 17 years of study behind it. Clause 2.1 accepts four routes to that total. One is 10+2+3+2, and another is 11+1+3+2. A third is 10 years plus a three-year diploma, a two-year UG and a two-year PG. The last is 10+2+4+1. Candidates from SC, ST and differently-abled groups get a 5% relaxation. So do other categories the Tamil Nadu government names.

Three rules in the 2025–26 regulations surprise people:

• Professional master’s degrees are out. Clause 2.2 bars M.E., M.Tech., and PG degrees in medicine, law, agriculture and similar professional courses from Bharathiar’s PhD programme. An engineer in Coimbatore goes to Anna University instead (see our engineering PhD page for Coimbatore). A farm-science graduate goes to TNAU (see our agriculture PhD page).
• The M.Phil. route stays in the same institution. An M.Phil. with 55% in its coursework lets you continue to a PhD where you did it. If your M.Phil. viva is still pending, you may be admitted there too.
• A second PhD is allowed in another discipline, if you meet the admission conditions again.

Students in the last year of their PG course can take the CET too. If you want to register without a fellowship, you must qualify in it. The only way round it is one of the exemptions below.

What is Bharathiar’s Common Eligibility Test, and who is exempt?

The CET is the university’s own entrance. It is held once a year, normally on the second weekend of May. There are five centres: Erode, Tiruppur, Ooty, Pollachi or Udumalpet, and Coimbatore itself. It is a single objective paper of 50 questions with four options each. Each question carries one mark, and there’s no negative marking. The pass mark is 15. You can use the score only in that academic year’s July and December sessions.

For 2026, the CET application guidelines set 30 April as the online deadline. A posted hard copy had to arrive by 7 May, addressed to the CET coordinator at the Department of Psychology. The CET announcements page later moved the online deadline to 10 May. By mid-June it said results had gone out by email, with score cards on the CET portal. Final-semester candidates upload the mark statements they have and a course-completion certificate.

Did you write the CET in your core subject? Then you may apply to interdisciplinary departments as well, according to the 2026 application instructions. The pass mark of 15 is low. But the CET score also feeds the half of your selection marks that the PG degree does not decide. So aim well above it. The regulations don’t describe the test’s syllabus. Ask the CET coordinator what your subject’s paper covers.

Who skips it. The regulations’ procedure for admission lets a long list of candidates skip the CET. It starts with UGC-NET or UGC-CSIR NET qualifiers including JRFs, and SLET, SET and GATE qualifiers. DST-INSPIRE fellows and M.Phil. holders skip it. So do holders of teacher fellowships such as FIP and FDP. DRDO scientists and faculty of the Air Force Administrative College are on the list, as are qualified candidates of foreign origin. Scientists from DRDO, CSIR, ICMR, DBT and other national research institutions are exempt too.

How does Bharathiar decide who is admitted?

On a 100-mark scale, then on vacancies. The 2025–26 regulations set it out like this:

The regulations describe the CET and the interview together as “25 out of 50”. Yet the CET alone is out of 50 and the interview out of 10. They don’t explain how the two are scaled. Nor do they say what marks stand in for the CET when you are exempt. Ask the selection committee how it calculates both before the interview.

The interview happens where you applied, before a selection committee. It is the dean, principal or centre director, the head of the department, and its recognised supervisors. Even if you clear 50, you are admitted only if a supervisor there has a vacancy. Supervisors are capped at eight scholars (Professor), six (Associate) and four (Assistant). A seat reopens from the date a current scholar actually submits the thesis. The July 2026 notification took applications from 10 to 29 June 2026. It based admission on the May 2026 CET marks. Each college or department needed its own application at ₹1,000 (₹500 for SC and ST candidates). We found no December 2026 notification on the university site on 27 September 2026. The regulations do provide for a December session, though.

Where can you do a Bharathiar PhD, full-time or part-time?

In one of three kinds of place. The university’s Centre for Research and Evaluation handles admission, registration and guide recognition. It describes its work across 39 university departments, 134 affiliated colleges and 33 research institutes. A college department qualifies if it has run the relevant UG or PG course for three years. But colleges may offer Tamil, English, Hindi, library science and physical education research without that.

The recognised research institutes reach far beyond Coimbatore. There are local ones such as SACON, SITRA and the Sugarcane Breeding Institute. The list also has the Pasteur Institute of India, the UPASI Tea Research Institute, the Radio Astronomy Centre and the Cosmic Ray Laboratory. And it has DRDO laboratories at Jodhpur, Tezpur and Timarpur in Delhi. Do you work outside Tamil Nadu? Then as a part-time applicant you qualify only through a national institute or one of these recognised institutes, for a ₹5,000 special fee. A scholar at a recognised institute who pays the special fee late is charged a ₹3,000 penalty for each year.

Full-time scholars work in the department for at least three years, including coursework. They keep 75% attendance each year, counting approved training and conferences. Part-time registration runs at least four years. It is open to teachers, project staff, professionals and regular employees under clause 2.5. An M.Phil. or M.Litt. in a related subject takes a year off either minimum. The part-time categories and residence days are explained with local examples on our Coimbatore guide page.

What coursework and Doctoral Committee rules apply after admission?

Coursework is called Part I, and it is the same as Part I of the old M.Phil. Under clause 18.1 of the regulations it has three papers:

1. Research methodology in your discipline.
2. An advanced course in the discipline.
3. A special paper in your area, or your supervisor’s research specialisation.

Full-time scholars sit Part I after six months, and part-timers after a year. You sit it in the May/June or December examinations. Each paper is three hours and 100 marks: five of eight questions at 8 marks, then five of eight at 12. Scripts are double-valued. The first examiner comes from outside the university’s area, the second from within it. Supervisors examine their own scholars’ special papers. You need 50 in each paper and 55% overall, within five attempts. You answer in English unless the subject is a language. An M.Phil. in the same area exempts you from Part I.

Your Doctoral Committee has three members. They are your supervisor, the head of department, and a subject expert with five years’ experience after a PhD. The Vice-Chancellor picks that expert from three names your supervisor sends. The committee meets at least twice, 10 months apart. The first meeting comes only after you clear Part I with 55%. You pay ₹8,000 once for the committee.

What does a Bharathiar PhD cost, and what do you upload?

The university’s research fees page lists these components for a Ph.D.:

The page was last updated in June 2023. So confirm the current figures with your department or college before you pay. Add the application fee of ₹1,000 per institution. If you later change supervisor with consent, add a ₹500 processing fee too.

The 2026 application instructions ask for these as PDFs of up to 200 KB each. The photo can be up to 200 KB and the signature up to 50 KB:

• Mark sheets for 10th, 12th, UG and every PG semester, the consolidated mark sheet, and the provisional and degree certificates.
• Community, special-category, transfer and migration certificates, as they apply to you.
• Your CET score card, or the certificate that exempts you: M.Phil., NET, SET, GATE, UGC-JRF, CSIR or a teacher fellowship.
• An experience certificate and your employer’s No Objection Certificate if you are applying part-time.
• A research proposal, as a PDF of no more than 200 KB like the other uploads.
