Which thesis rulebook applies to a Hyderabad PhD: Osmania, JNTUH, UoH or a central university?

The one printed on your admission letter, not the one your lab follows. Say you work at IICT or NIN. You may be registered with Osmania, whose rules name both as research laboratories, or you may be with AcSIR. A JNTUH scholar, in the same way, may work in a research centre at an affiliated engineering college. Each rulebook below comes from the university’s own document.

Two gaps matter. Osmania’s rules fix paper, font, spacing and reference style. But they say nothing about margins or page order. That’s why our Osmania thesis format guide spends time on what to agree with your department. The University of Hyderabad’s ordinance covers the certificates and the language, not the layout. JNTUH is the opposite. Its write-up guidelines fix the fonts right down to the caption size. What does Osmania’s 2026-27 rulebook add to the last year of writing?

Quite a lot of paper. The Standing Committee of the Academic Senate approved the Ph.D. Rules and Regulations 2026-27 on 14 May and 20 August 2026. They put several new papers between a finished draft and the Examination Branch:

• An SDG certificate. Clause 28.2 asks you to show which Sustainable Development Goals the thesis serves. You sign it, and so do your supervisor, the Head, the Chairperson of the Board of Studies and the Dean. The rules give no format, so write a short, honest paragraph, and have the form ready before the chase for signatures begins.
• An RAC originality certificate. Your Research Advisory Committee now certifies that the work is original (27.4(d)). This is on top of your supervisor’s certificate.
• Two undertakings on one page. Similarity at 10% or less and AI-generated content at 20% or less (27.4(a)).
• The synopsis first. Your supervisor sends six copies with a panel of twelve examiners at least three months before you submit (27.13(ii)). Examiners agree to evaluate on the strength of the synopsis alone (28.5). So give it the same care as Chapter 1. Our synopsis format guide covers the structure.
• Reprints as an appendix. The two papers you publish jointly with your supervisor are bound in (clause 25).

Miss one and the counter sends it back. Clause 28.3 says an incomplete submission is simply rejected. Raise one inconsistency with your department early. Clauses 4.1 and 13.2 set a minimum of four years for full-time scholars, but clause 27.1 still allows you to submit after three. Plan your final chapter around whichever date the Dean’s office confirms for your batch. How does the JNTUH colloquium shape the way the final chapters are written?

At JNTUH your thesis is, in effect, examined twice. First you have to earn the colloquium. Under section 9.3 of the PhD regulations effective from 2021-22, you can apply only after four things: the research methodology course, the coursework, two satisfactory Research Review Meetings and the required papers. Then you face the Departmental Research Committee. You bring a draft thesis and five copies of a synopsis that highlights your original contributions. The committee either clears the work or writes down its reasons for revision, and every member signs them. If it’s a revision, you wait at least three months before you reapply. Three attempts is the limit.

Once you’re cleared, the thesis must go in within six months, or the colloquium has to be repeated. That same window has to take in the similarity check at the Directorate of R&D. The application for submission lists what goes in. You hand over five final copies after the colloquium and similarity corrections, a synopsis of no more than 30 pages, and an abstract. You also list and sign the journal papers from your PhD period, and add a sealed panel of examiners.

The general outline for thesis write-up suggests an order for the chapters. It runs from introduction and literature survey to theoretical analysis, experimental investigations, results and discussion, and ends with a summary and recommendations. It adds a note: the original contribution must be highlighted. Your name on the cover must match your SSC or CBSE memo exactly. And a certificate from the head of your organisation sits after the supervisor’s.

Can a Hyderabad thesis be written in Urdu, Telugu or Hindi?

It depends on the university, and the city’s universities give very different answers.

MANUU. Chapter 24 of the MANUU PhD Regulations 2023 asks for the thesis in English. The exception is the language disciplines, where you write in the language concerned. Either way, the abstract inside the thesis is bilingual. It’s Urdu and English, or English and the language of study. You may also choose to submit the whole thesis in both Urdu and English, bound as one volume. The regulations prefer Noori Nastaleeq at 15 point for Urdu and Nask-e-Jadeed at 15 point for Persian. For Hindi it’s Kruti Dev 10 at 14 point. The front cover is in English and the rear cover in Urdu. Even the title is approved in both languages, by the Departmental Research Committee in the second semester.

University of Hyderabad. The thesis is written in English. That’s regulation 7 of chapter IX of the academic ordinances. But when the subject relates to a language other than English, it may be written in that language. So a scholar in the Telugu or Hindi department can write in Telugu or Hindi.

Osmania and JNTUH. Neither rulebook says anything about the language of the thesis. Osmania’s rules only say the coursework exam is in English, except where the subject’s medium is another language (21.3). Do you plan to write in Telugu or Urdu at Osmania? Then get the Board of Studies to agree in writing before you start drafting.

EFLU. The PhD handbook for 2023-24 and 2024-25 sets a 3.5 cm left margin, Times New Roman in 12 point and 1.5 line spacing. But layout comes later. First, EFLU expects a full proposal of roughly 10,000 words. The proposal has to clear the Advisory Committee and the Board of Studies. Only then does the Dean, Research, give you formal permission to start writing the thesis.

If your thesis is bilingual, we review the English text in depth. We don’t review Urdu, Telugu or Hindi prose. So ask someone in your department to check the regional-language abstract against the final English version.

How do the University of Hyderabad and IIT Hyderabad handle the synopsis and the final draft?

University of Hyderabad. The ordinance keeps it simple. You tell the Dean, through your supervisor, that the work is ready, and you hand in four copies of a synopsis. The Doctoral Committee then satisfies itself about the work. In most schools, that means an open seminar. The current thesis certificate and declaration formats ask for more than the ordinance does. Your supervisor certifies your coursework and names every paper you’ve published. Each one gets its ISSN and the thesis chapter that draws on it. Your declaration agrees to deposit in Shodhganga, and it encloses a plagiarism report from the University Librarian. A separate page asks which SDG the thesis addresses and how, in 250 words. Submission itself is now online, and under the thesis processing procedure, you upload the thesis and synopsis and pay ₹1,200. After that, you can’t edit the application. Your supervisor proposes six external examiners, no more than two from Telangana. Our University of Hyderabad guide covers the earlier stages.

IIT Hyderabad. Here it starts with a form. The August 2026 open colloquium request form must reach the academic section at least 10 days before the proposed date. With it go the thesis, a synopsis of 8 to 10 pages and the similarity declaration. You also add an author declaration for papers reused as chapters, and an AI declaration. The Doctoral Committee may ask for changes. If it does, the revised thesis is due within one month of the colloquium. That leaves little time for a second reader, unless the review happens before the colloquium.

Each one comes back marked up in Word, and you accept, query or reject each change line by line. Your rulebook sets the calendar:

• Osmania scholars count backwards from the synopsis deadline. The synopsis and the twelve-name panel reach the Chairperson, Board of Studies, a full quarter before the thesis does. So we review the synopsis first, then the chapters. That way the synopsis the examiners accept matches the thesis they receive.
• JNTUH scholars need the full draft reviewed before the colloquium, since the committee reads that draft. The six months after clearance are kept for three jobs: the committee’s written corrections, the R&D similarity check and the Bookman Old Style layout pass.
• University of Hyderabad and IIT Hyderabad scholars plan around the Doctoral Committee seminar or the open colloquium. At IITH the revision window is one month. So our review happens before the colloquium, not after.
• MANUU scholars have 90 days from the pre-submission seminar. We finish the English chapters before the seminar, along with the English abstract that your Urdu version will follow.

Some steps stay with you. The JNTUH application, the Osmania signatures and SDG certificate, the UoH online upload and the printed copies all need you, your supervisor and your department.
