Which Hyderabad universities admit PhD scholars, and through which test?

Eight institutions take PhD scholars on a regular cycle. The research labs (CCMB, IICT, NGRI, CDFD and others) are a separate, fellowship-led route, covered in research institutes in Hyderabad.

The next sections take the three large public universities one by one. A practical point first: the University of Hyderabad and JNTUH both say they will not write to you. Shortlists and selection lists appear only on their websites, so check every few days once you have applied.

Why does the University of Hyderabad use an entrance for some subjects and NET for others?

In the 2026-27 cycle the University of Hyderabad ran two admissions under one name, and which one applied depended only on your subject.

The entrance stream. The July 2026 notification offered 187 seats in 28 programmes through an all-India entrance. The larger intakes were Physics (24), Biochemistry and Telugu (20 each), Animal Biology (18) and Materials Engineering (12). Tests were held on 6 and 7 June at Hyderabad and six other cities from Kochi to Guwahati. Holders of a valid JRF skip the written test; their interview mark out of 30 is scaled to 100 for the merit list.

The NET stream. A second notification, issued on 1 September 2026 and extended on 24 September, offered 147 seats in 17 programmes on UGC-NET or CSIR-NET scores, with no university test at all. This is where the big science and social-science intakes sit: Chemistry (49 seats), Economics (19), Computer Science (15), Management Studies (11) and English (10). The extended closing date was 10 October 2026.

In both streams the interview is out of 30, split subject by subject. In Mathematics, 10 go to your research proposal and how you defend it. Go with a proposal you can talk about for ten minutes without notes.

The split has a blunt consequence. A chemist or economist without NET has no way into the University of Hyderabad this year, however good the master’s degree. A physicist or a Telugu scholar without NET still has the June entrance. The university also ran a smaller January 2026 session, notified on 24 October 2025, largely to fill seats left vacant in July.

How do Osmania University’s Category-I and Category-II admissions work?

Osmania’s Ph.D. Rules and Regulations 2026-2027 divide the notified vacancies in half under rule 6. Half go to Category-I, for holders of a JRF from UGC, CSIR, ICMR, ICAR, DBT, INSPIRE or the national fellowships for SC, ST and PwD scholars. The other half go to Category-II, for those who pass the university’s own test. If Category-I seats find no takers, they move to Category-II.

Category-I

This call comes once a year; in 2026 it ran from 20 May to 10 June, with a ₹2,000 fee. There is no test: the committee interviews you and allots a supervisor with a vacancy. Rule 6.1(e) is easy to miss. Category-I scholars must work full-time, so a JRF holder who intends to keep a job should not apply this way.

Category-II

The 2026 entrance brochure describes a computer-based test of 100 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, set on the subject syllabus and in English except for language subjects. To qualify you need 45% (Open), 40% (BC and EWS) or 35% (SC, ST and PwD). The fee is ₹2,000, or ₹1,500 for reserved categories. Applications opened on 26 August 2026, and a press note of 24 September extended the closing date to 5 October.

Three details matter more than they look:

• Passing is not admission. The university invites a separate admission application after the results, and seats then depend on supervisor vacancies in each department. Selection weighs the test at 70 and the interview at 30 (rule 7.2(g)), and a tie goes to the older candidate.
• You may test in an allied subject. Osmania publishes a list of allied subjects. Its own example: an M.Com. graduate can seek a PhD in Business Management by taking the Business Management test.
• The result lasts one cycle. A 2026 pass counts only for the 2026 admission.

Osmania’s rules also make the PhD longer than the national minimum: four years for full-time scholars and five for part-time, including coursework (rule 4.1). Our Osmania thesis format guide covers what happens at the other end.

What does JNTUH’s 2026-27 notification ask of engineering and science applicants?

JNTU Hyderabad’s Directorate of Admissions opened its 2026-27 PhD applications on 23 September 2026, with 17 October as the last date without a late fee and 31 October as the last date with a ₹1,000 late fee. It runs four programmes from one portal: full-time, external, external for industrial executives, and full-time at research centres in affiliated colleges. Who writes the test. A NET, CSIR-NET, SLET or valid GATE or GPAT score exempts you. Others sit a two-hour, 100-question entrance and need 40% (OC), 35% (BC) or 30% (SC, ST and PH).

How the interview is scored. The interview carries 50 marks, and 30 of them are fixed before you walk in: up to 10 for your UG class, up to 10 for your PG class, and 2 for each SCI or Scopus paper up to 10. Only 20 marks are for the subject interview. Five indexed papers put you ten marks ahead before the panel asks a question.

Full-time seats. The full-time programme in the constituent colleges is meant for candidates who bring a research fellowship. The university adds 21 fellowships of ₹15,000 a month of its own, spread across its engineering branches and its biotechnology, environment and nanoscience centres. The vacancy statement lists 203 seats across its constituent colleges, with Computer Science and Engineering (62) the largest.

Is a NET without JRF enough at Osmania, JNTUH or the University of Hyderabad?

NET now comes in three grades: JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility, and PhD admission only. Hyderabad treats them very differently. (What the fellowships pay is on our PhD fellowships guide.)

• University of Hyderabad: in 17 subjects, NET is the only way in. In the other 28, a JRF takes you straight to interview.
• Osmania: only a JRF helps, through Category-I. Rule 5.3 says candidates with NET for Assistant Professor, or NET for PhD admission only, must still write the Category-II test.
• JNTUH: any NET, SLET, GATE or GPAT qualification spares you the entrance.
• IIT Hyderabad: for an M.Sc. applicant, GATE, CSIR or UGC NET, INSPIRE or a similar award is part of the eligibility. A first-class M.Tech. does not need one.
• IIIT Hyderabad: a NET that is still valid gets you shortlisted for interview without the PGEE.
• EFLU: NET or JRF holders are interviewed directly, and their interview mark is scaled to 100 so that they can be ranked with test-takers.

The practical reading: a NET without JRF is worth a great deal at JNTUH and in the University of Hyderabad’s NET-stream subjects (its Electronics Science entry accepts all three NET categories), and nothing at Osmania.

Which Hyderabad windows open in which months?

These are the 2025-26 and 2026-27 dates from the notifications we read. Treat the months as a guide and check each site.

• February to April: IIIT Hyderabad’s PGEE portal (20 February to 5 April in 2026), the BITS first-semester call (26 February to 29 April), MANUU (to 27 April) and IIT Hyderabad’s July intake, which it announces in March.
• Late April to May: the University of Hyderabad’s entrance stream (30 April to 21 May in 2026, after a two-day extension).
• May and June: Osmania Category-I (20 May to 10 June 2026), the BITS selection days, the UoH entrance tests on 6 and 7 June and IIIT Hyderabad’s PhD interviews on 12 and 13 June.
• September and October: the busiest stretch. Osmania Category-II, the UoH NET-based session and the JNTUH notification were all open at the same time in 2026.
• October and November: the University of Hyderabad’s January session, which in 2025 was notified on 24 October to fill vacancies left from July, IIIT Hyderabad’s winter research round (16 October to 23 November 2025) and IIT Hyderabad’s January cycle, which its Electrical Engineering department expected to open in October 2026.

If you have an M.Sc. and no JRF, a workable year looks like this: the UoH entrance in June if your subject is in the entrance stream, then Osmania Category-II in October. An M.Tech. graduate should apply to IIT Hyderabad and IIIT Hyderabad in spring and keep JNTUH as the autumn option.
