Kerala University, KTU or an institute: which rulebook governs a Thiruvananthapuram thesis?

Start with the name that will appear on your degree certificate. One lab in the city can host scholars of several universities at once. A College of Engineering Trivandrum presentation from December 2021 counted 216 KTU scholars there. It noted more than 100 more registered under the University of Kerala. Same campus, two sets of rules.

What does KTU expect between the synopsis meeting and the A5 copies?

KTU squeezes the end of the PhD. You carry the synopsis and a first draft of the full thesis into the synopsis meeting of your Doctoral Committee, in hard and soft copy. That’s clause 21.1 of the 2023 regulations (U.O. No. 1166/2023/KTU, 16 May 2023). At the meeting the Committee checks your conference and journal papers. It accepts or returns the synopsis. Then it proposes a panel of eight examiners: no more than three from within Kerala, and none from KTU-affiliated institutions. From acceptance you have two months to submit. The Dean (Research) can extend that, but only for valid reasons.

So a KTU thesis has to be finished before the synopsis meeting. Nearly finished won’t do.

KTU’s guidelines for preparation of thesis and synopsis then fix the look of it:

• The order starts with a title sheet, a declaration of academic honesty and integrity, the supervisor’s certificate, acknowledgement and abstract.
• Chapter 1 is titled Introduction and chapter 2 is a review of literature. The final Summary and Conclusions chapter ends with limitations and scope for future work.
• The soft copy is A4. Library copies are printed on A5, on 75 gsm paper or heavier, in Times New Roman 12 or similar at 1.5 spacing.
• You print on both sides. The 35 mm inner margin swaps sides between odd and even pages, and each chapter starts on an odd page.
• References follow the style of a standard journal in your field, used consistently. The guidelines give IEEE as the example for electrical engineering.
• The synopsis runs to 20 pages at most. You upload it as a PDF so the thesis can be evaluated online.

The CET presentation lists the final package as three A5 hard copies for KTU and one for the college, a plagiarism report and a thesis fee of ₹15,000. But it predates the 2023 regulations. How do SCTIMST, IISER and IIST handle the synopsis and the thesis?

SCTIMST. The institute’s thesis preparation guidelines are the most prescriptive in the city. The thesis is in English on A4, printed single-sided and double-spaced. Page numbers go bottom right, and “SCTIMST, Trivandrum” goes in the footer. The final hard-bound library copy is different: single-spaced, printed on both sides, in textbook size. Chapters run Introduction, Literature Review, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion (Results and Discussion may be merged), then Summary and Conclusion. The synopsis sits before the main text and stays under six pages. It carries no citations, headings or diagrams, and it goes in three months before the thesis. Your guide’s certificate records clearance from the Institutional Ethics Committee or the other committees your work needed. Your own declaration has a line for any external help you sought. You must declare it and acknowledge it. The guidelines themselves suggest that writers not fluent in English have the manuscript professionally edited before submission. IISER Thiruvananthapuram, Vithura. The PhD guide book for 2023–24 and 2024–25 treats the synopsis as a chapter-wise summary. You prepare it only after the Doctoral Committee agrees, and you present it to the Dean (Academics) with the Committee. You give a synopsis seminar to the department first. The electronic thesis then follows within two months, forwarded by your guide and the School chairperson.

IIST, Valiamala. The October 2025 PhD guide book puts a pre-synopsis seminar and viva before anything is submitted. It’s open to the whole institute. Within 10 days you file a synopsis of 1,000 to 2,000 words. It must include your list of publications and the proposed contents of the thesis. The soft copy of the thesis is due within three months of that evaluation, with a plagiarism report your supervisor has endorsed. Three corrected hard-bound copies follow the viva.

Does a Kerala University thesis need a Malayalam abstract, and what does its submission form catch?

No document we read asks for a Malayalam abstract. It isn’t in the University of Kerala’s PhD Regulations 2022 or its thesis submission form. It isn’t in KTU’s guidelines or the institute guide books either. SCTIMST goes the other way and requires English. That’s a real difference from Chennai, where Anna University and the University of Madras both demand a Tamil abstract. Are you writing your thesis in Malayalam, say in the Department of Malayalam? Then the language question is one for your Doctoral Committee. It isn’t a formatting rule.

What the University of Kerala does care about is the submission file. From the form and its instructions:

• The ten one-page synopses must not show your name or your supervisor’s.
• Any change of title must already have a University order. You attach it in original.
• You need a clearance certificate from the Kerala University Library at Palayam, or a certificate saying you were never a member.
• The thesis, approved or not, may not be published without the University’s sanction (instruction 9).

Before that comes the pre-submission seminar, held for the Department Doctoral Committee (clause 11(2)). A University order of 13 January 2021 requires four people to be present: the supervisor, the head of department, the Dean and the observer. All four sign the list of corrections filed with the minutes. That signed list is the checklist your revision is judged against. Our notes on the pre-submission seminar cover the talk itself. Kerala University, KTU, SCTIMST and IIST all want a signed declaration or a supervisor’s certificate that the thesis records your own research. KTU’s declaration warns of disciplinary and penal action for anything copied or fabricated. That is why our role stops at review. Our ethics policy explains the line.

• IIST scholars have only 10 days between the pre-synopsis seminar and the synopsis deadline. That’s why we review the synopsis draft before the seminar.
