What comes first at Bharathidasan: the entrance test or the guide?

The test, then the guide, then the application. Clause 5.2.2 of the Ph.D. Regulations 2026 sets the order:

1. Qualify. Pass the university’s Ph.D. Qualifying Entrance Examination, or hold UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, SET or SLET. The eligibility certificate from the test stays valid for five years.
2. Find a guide. “The eligible candidates shall approach the Research Supervisors from the subject concerned and forward the Ph.D. admission application through them.”
3. Apply through the centre. You send the application with a short research proposal to the university department or college. Its Departmental Research Committee (DRC), made up of the department’s recognised guides, approves the proposal, and your provisional registration dates from that meeting. You then deliver a hard copy to the university in person within five days.

Clause 6.0 lets you submit the application at any time of the year. The entrance test has its own calendar. The August 2026 notification, dated 24 July, closed applications on 21 August and held the test online on 30 August: 50 multiple-choice questions for 100 marks in 75 minutes, on the Bharathidasan PG syllabus of your subject, taken from home with a camera. The fee was ₹1,800 (₹1,200 for SC and ST candidates). A score of 50% earns an interview, and the final ranking is 70% test and 30% interview. Sound out one or two guides before the test, not after. A guide who already knows your topic will move faster once your certificate arrives.

Where are Bharathidasan’s recognised guides in Trichy?

The List of Ph.D. Guides on the university’s portal can be filtered by discipline and gives each guide’s designation and research centre. On 27 September 2026 it held 1,609 names. About 800 of them work at a Tiruchirappalli address, spread across the university’s own departments and about 15 city colleges and institutes.

Treat the portal as a starting point, not a census. Bishop Heber College’s 2026–27 prospectus claims 117 research supervisors in 17 research departments, a few more than the portal shows. The university’s own “List of Ph.D. Research Centres” link, on its PhD admissions page, pointed to a server that did not respond when we checked, so confirm a department’s centre status with the college’s research office.

Two things stand out in the numbers. Chemistry (about 100 guides in the city) and Tamil (about 95) are the easiest subjects in which to find a guide, while Geology has seven and History 14. And the ICAR National Research Centre for Banana is itself a recognised centre, so a biotechnology or plant science scholar can work with a scientist there rather than in a college laboratory.

Why do most Trichy college guides have room for only two or three part-timers?

Because nearly all of them are Assistant or Associate Professors, and part-timers are capped at half of each cadre. Under clause 3.5 the ceiling depends on rank: eight scholars for a Professor, six for an Associate and four for an Assistant Professor, full-time and part-time together. Two further rules in the same clause decide most cases in Trichy:

• Part-timers may not exceed 50% in each cadre. An Assistant Professor can have at most two part-time scholars, an Associate Professor three.
• A vacancy arises only after thesis submission or cancellation. A guide whose four scholars are all mid-way has no place for you this year, however keen they are.

Now look at who the city’s guides are. Of the roughly 800 names at Trichy addresses, only about 70 are Professors, and almost all of those work in the university’s own departments. In the colleges nearly every guide is an Assistant or Associate Professor. If you are a school teacher or a bank officer wanting a part-time place in a college, you are competing for two or three part-time slots per guide.

That is why the first conversation matters. Ask the guide these questions before you spend anything:

• How many scholars they have now, and how many are part-time. An Assistant Professor with two part-timers cannot take a third, even with two full-time places free.
• When their current scholars will submit. A place opens only when a thesis goes in or a registration is cancelled.
• Whether their department is a recognised research centre. If not, they cannot take a fresh scholar at all.
• How far they are from retirement. Close to it, they may need a co-supervisor from the same centre to register you.
• Whether your PG subject matches theirs. Recognition is normally in one subject, and you register in the department named after your master’s subject.

Can a relative, a guest lecturer or a guide near retirement register you at Bharathidasan?

No, or only with conditions. Being on the list is not enough, and the 2026 regulations rule a guide out in four situations.

The guide’s department is not a research centre. Clause 3.6.4 lets college guides take scholars only if their department is recognised. Under clause 3.6.5, a guide in an unrecognised department may continue with existing scholars only with a co-supervisor from a recognised centre, for two years, and takes no fresh candidates until the department gains centre status. A department needs postgraduate teaching and at least two recognised guides to apply (clause 4.2.1).

The guide is close to retirement. Clause 3.7 lets guides register scholars until superannuation but ties new registrations near retirement to a co-supervisor from the same centre. Its wording is unclear, so ask how the college reads it. New recognition cannot even be sought with less than three years of service left (clause 3.3).

The guide is not on a regular post. Guest lecturers and teaching assistants cannot hold research advisership (clause 3.1.1). A teacher at a self-financing college needs the Registrar’s “Qualification Approval” letter to be recognised at all.

You are related. Clause 5.4 bars a guide or co-supervisor from registering a blood relative, and cancels the registration if it comes to light later.

If your guide transfers to another Bharathidasan college with a recognised department, you follow them by changing centre. If they move to an unrecognised department or outside the university’s area, clauses 3.6.1 and 3.6.2 set out when you need a co-supervisor or a new guide. How do 30 days a year and first-year coursework fit around a Trichy job?

Clause 1.4 accepts anyone employed, regular or temporary, with one year of continuous service, and guest lecturers with two years (four semesters) of service. The employer can be a college, department, institute, industry or organisation, but the last three must employ ten or more people full-time and run their own website. That rules out many family businesses and small coaching centres.

You must spend at least 30 days a year at the research centre, in one or more spells, until you submit the synopsis (clause 2.2). If you work outside Tamil Nadu, the university assigns you a co-supervisor in the state where you work, and you submit their willingness letter with your application.

Coursework comes in the first year for everyone: Research Methodology, Research and Publication Ethics, a core-area paper and a related-area paper, completed within 12 months of provisional registration (clause 7.2). Registration is confirmed only after that, and missing the deadline cancels it automatically. Plan your leave around these papers before you plan anything else.

What happens at the Bharathidasan interview and the DRC meeting?

The August 2026 interview instructions allot 15 of the 30 marks to subject knowledge, 10 to research aptitude and 5 to communication, in 10 to 15 minutes. You are told to prepare at least three PG subjects you know well, explain your PG or UG dissertation, bring it along, and share “a couple of research questions” that led you to a PhD. You are told not to bring mark sheets, and no travel allowance is paid. The interview schedule for 9 and 10 October 2026 split subjects between the Khajamalai campus, about 3 km from the Central Bus Stand, and the main Palkalaiperur campus on the Pudukkottai road, about 17 km out.

The DRC meeting comes after you have a guide. The committee certifies that your topic does not repeat earlier work, and clause 5.2.1 makes the guide responsible for a proposal free of language errors.
