When does the University of Calicut admit PhD scholars?

The main route is a single cycle each year, put out by the Directorate of Admissions. Each cycle is named after the year it belongs to, even when it runs into the next one. The Ph.D. 2024 cycle was notified on 21 January 2025. The Ph.D. 2025 cycle came on 15 December 2025. The 2025 cycle ran like this:

The next cycle is being set up. A Directorate of Research press release of 10 August 2026 went to supervisors in the university’s own departments and in approved centres. It asked them to upload, by 14 August 2026, the vacancies they want listed with the 2026 PhD notice. Any sent in late would not be taken up. When we checked the Ph.D. admission page on 27 September 2026, it still showed the Ph.D. 2025 papers. Keep an eye on that page and on the press releases. The notice says no one is told one by one.

Plan backwards from the pattern. Say the 2026 notice follows the 2025 one. Then the window to apply will be short, about ten days without fine. The test and interviews will fall in the following February and March. Have your mark lists, category and NET certificates scanned in advance.

What is on the Calicut PhD entrance test, and who is exempt?

Regulation 4 and the notice set out two stages: the test, then the interview. The test covers research methods and your subject. The university’s question paper format for the 2024 test was two hours and 100 marks:

• Part A: 20 one-mark questions, all to be done
• Part B: 10 two-mark questions, all to be done
• Part C: any 8 of 10 five-mark questions
• Part D: any 2 of 4 ten-mark questions.

So about a fifth of the paper is short objective answers, and the rest is written. Practise both. Our research methodology MCQs cover the objective end. To reach the interview you need 50%. It’s 40% if you’re SC or ST, and 45% for OBC (non-creamy layer), differently abled and other notified groups. There is no revaluation. But you can ask for a photocopy of your script within 10 days of the short lists. In 2025–26, the timetable put every stream on 14 February 2026, from Aquaculture and Fishery Microbiology to Zoology. There was a morning and an afternoon session.

Clause 3.2 of the 2025 notification lets these groups skip the test:

• UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF and approved central or state fellowships
• full-time regular teachers of university departments, government or aided colleges and the Directorate of Collegiate Education, and teachers on FDP, QIP or similar fellowships
• scientists with five years’ experience in state or central aided research bodies
• foreign nationals, and scholars joining a joint degree course with a foreign university
• full-time project fellows picked by written test and interview and working under a university research guide
• UGC-NET and CSIR-NET holders, including the “PhD admission only” category from 2024 on (added by a university order of 24 January 2025).

SLET, GATE and M.Phil. are not on that list. Regulation 4.3 says those people sit the test. A NET holder with no JRF skips the test but is ranked 70% on NET marks and 30% on the interview. The NET marks count for one year.

How do you choose a research centre and supervisor at Calicut?

You can only get in against a listed vacancy. The Ph.D. 2025 notice carried a 42-page vacancy list, made on 8 December 2025. It named 404 supervisors in 34 subjects. For each one, it gave the centre, how many they guide now and how many places are free. Most centres on it are colleges, such as Farook College in Kozhikode, Christ College in Irinjalakuda and St. Thomas College in Thrissur. The university’s own departments are on it too. By our count, the list gave a little under 900 places in all.

Use the list before you apply, not after the test. Once the short lists come out, you have about five days to report to the centre you want. Each centre ranks the people who report to it. So pick a centre where a supervisor in your area has a real vacancy, and where you can attend. Regulation 2.3.1 gives full-time registration to resident scholars.

The Department Research Committee takes in all the guides of the department. It asks you about your research interest and aptitude, and then it gives you a supervisor. It weighs each supervisor’s load and field, your stated interest and the supervisor’s willingness (regulation 5.8). Under regulation 5:

• a Professor or Associate Professor needs five papers in UGC-CARE List I or II journals, and an Assistant Professor three. They must be first or corresponding author, with at least one paper in the last three years. A patent counts as a paper.
• a Professor may guide eight scholars, an Associate Professor six and an Assistant Professor four, plus two international scholars. A jointly guided scholar counts as half.
• a vacancy opens on the day one of the supervisor’s scholars submits a thesis.

If you apply in two subjects, you file two forms. And if you want to sit two test papers, you must email [email protected] within three days of applying.

Who can register any time of the year, and who can study part-time?

Anytime registration. Some people need not wait for the yearly cycle. They are JRF and fellowship holders, regular teachers, experienced scientists, foreign nationals, joint-degree scholars and selected project fellows (clauses 3.2.1 to 3.2.6 of the 2025 notification). They can register whenever a supervisor is willing and has a vacancy. The vacancy has to be posted on the website of the university or the college. Here’s one case. The Department of Commerce and Management Studies notified one anytime vacancy on 29 June 2026 for permanent teachers of government-aided colleges. Forms went in by email until 15 July, and the interview was on 20 July 2026. NET holders with no JRF are not in this group. They apply through the yearly cycle.

Part-time. Regulation 2.3 lists who may register part-time:

• permanent teachers, academics and scientists in central, state or grant-in-aid bodies, librarians in government or aided colleges, and permanent staff of the university
• principals and teachers of self-financing colleges, and contract or guest lecturers in government or aided colleges and university departments. They need at least 12 months’ service, and they must pass the test.
• scientists and teachers working abroad, under an MoU with their institution, with six weeks at the centre each year
• project fellows whose project is not the subject of the PhD
• professionals in R&D units of scientific bodies or industry. They need one year of full-time work, in an organisation at least five years old, and must be under 55. They need a mentor with a PhD in the organisation as joint supervisor. They spend six weeks a year at the centre, and they must pass the test.

Every part-timer needs the employer’s no-objection certificate stating the three UGC conditions. A full-time scholar who takes up a job can switch to part-time after finishing coursework. How do you apply, what does it cost, and what coursework follows?

Everyone applies online, even those who skip the test. First you create a CAP ID by checking your mobile number. You log in with the security key sent to it, fill in the form and pay. In the 2025 cycle, that was ₹875, or ₹330 for SC and ST candidates (press release of 15 December 2025). You don’t post the printout. You show it at the research centre when you are admitted.

Coursework under regulation 6 is 12 credits. It runs in two windows a year (January to June and July to December), and you finish it in your first one or two years:

• Research Methodology, 4 credits (96 teaching hours)
• an Elective course set by your supervisor and approved by the Research Advisory Committee, 4 credits (96 teaching hours)
• Research and Publication Ethics, 2 credits (30 teaching hours)
• a review of published research in your field, 2 credits, judged by viva at the Preliminary Qualifying Examination.

The Preliminary Qualifying Examination is held in your own department or centre. The Research Advisory Committee fixes the marks, with at least one outside examiner. You need 55% to go on. M.Phil. holders can skip the core and elective papers if the committee asks for that in their case.

After that, you meet the Research Advisory Committee every six months. It has the head of the centre, three subject experts and your supervisor. Your term fee is taken only with its progress report. Before you submit, you need one paper in a UGC-CARE listed journal and two talks at conferences or seminars (regulation 8.3). The thesis carries a Malayalam abstract as well.
