Part-time PhD in Bengaluru

Which Bengaluru institutions let you keep your job, and what do they demand?

Five routes are open. JAIN is left out: its August 2026 notice asks working professionals only for an NOC at enrolment and sets no part-time terms.

Roughly: the ERP suits R&D scientists and college faculty, VTU engineering-college staff, and CHRIST anyone who can give up weekends. Industry employees can also be sponsored into an AcSIR PhD at CSIR-NAL (see research institutes in Bengaluru).

Is IISc’s External Registration Programme open to someone at an IT company?

Sometimes, but it was not built for a typical services job. The ERP page describes it as a route for people “employed in R & D environments in scientific institutions or industries” and for young engineering and science faculty. Its conditions, all of which have to hold:

• The organisation. At least five years old for a PhD (three for an M.Tech. by research), doing R&D, with research facilities you can use.
• You. Two years of full-time employment by 1 August of the admission year (1 January for the mid-year intake), and under 50 when classes begin. A GATE, NET-JRF or similar score is desirable but not mandatory.
• A joint supervisor at work. A permanent employee with a PhD, three years of post-doctoral experience and at least five years of service left, who attends your examinations and review meetings. You also need an IISc supervisor in the department before you apply.
• Time on campus. One or two terms at IISc straight after admission, and then at least eight weeks a year with the IISc supervisor. Missing the first residence cancels the registration.
• Reporting. A progress report every six months. Three missed reports end the registration.
• Staying put. You must remain with the same organisation and place of work until the research is done.

The ERP fee is ₹2,000. The deadline was 31 March for August 2026, and 26 October 2026 for January 2027. If you are in the R&D centre of an engineering or aerospace firm with PhD holders on the team, look at the ERP first. In application support with no PhD on the floor, the joint-supervisor rule will stop you, and VTU or a university route is the likelier fit.

How many days a year does a VTU part-time PhD take from your job?

About a month, in two visits, plus coursework in the first two years. From the VTU Ph.D. Regulations 2023:

• Residence. Clause 2.3(5) requires 15 days at your research centre twice a year, before every RAC review, until you submit the final synopsis. The RAC endorses a residence certificate from your supervisor, and if you fall short the half-yearly report is marked “not satisfactory” (clause 7.1).
• Coursework. At least 12 credits, including Research Methodology and Research and Publication Ethics (clause 6.1). Courses can be taken through NPTEL or at the centre, as the RAC recommends. Each course needs 75% attendance, has a VTU exam (held twice a year) with 55% to pass, and you get four consecutive attempts at most.
• Expected effort. Clause 6.7.3 says part-time scholars are expected to devote at least half their daily time to research.
• Duration. Minimum four years including coursework, maximum six (clauses 7.2.8 and 7.2.9). The Comprehensive Viva-Voce must be cleared within four years of provisional registration, or the admission lapses.

Clause 2.3(3) prescribes the NOC’s wording: permission for part-time study, confirmation that official duties allow enough research time, and release for coursework where required. Faculty sponsored under ADF, QIP or FIP cannot go part-time at all (clause 2.2). When the thesis stage comes, our VTU thesis format guide covers the Belagavi requirements.

Can you finish PhD coursework on weekends in Bengaluru?

At CHRIST, yes. Elsewhere, mostly no. Coursework is where part-time plans usually break.

CHRIST. Its June 2024 admission guidelines schedule part-time coursework on Saturdays and Sundays, 9 am to 4 pm, for the first six months, excluding public holidays. You need 85% attendance to sit the end-of-coursework exam, and one repeat is allowed. Classes may be held at the Central campus on Hosur Road, whichever campus you joined. The harder demand comes later: you must meet your supervisor in person at least twice a month during the university’s working hours, and attend at least four RAC meetings a year.

Bangalore University and DMSBCU. Both expect a semester of coursework on a full-time basis. DMSBCU’s 2026–27 notice lets part-time scholars stretch it over two semesters “in exceptional cases”: papers I, II and III with the full-time batch in the first semester, the research proposal in the second. Ask your employer for that semester’s release before you accept the seat.

VTU. NPTEL courses, where your RAC approves them, can be studied in the evenings, though the exams come on VTU’s dates.

IIIT Bangalore. The PhD manual (January 2021) admits part-time scholars who can attend classes “as per schedule of the Institute”, with a minimum load of 8 units a semester against 16 for full-time scholars. Every PhD scholar, part-time included, also serves two semesters as a teaching assistant. If your employer cannot release you in time, the manual lets part-time admits defer to the next term, including the summer term.

What do Bangalore University and City University expect of part-time scholars?

Bangalore University’s website still carries its 2016 Ph.D. regulations, although the 2026 notice refers to regulations of 2024 that we could not find online. DMSBCU’s 2026 notice repeats the 2016 coursework rule word for word; treat the other points as the last published version and confirm them with the department.

• Who counts. The part-time programme is for working people “in the University and outside”, naming teachers, scientists, professionals, librarians, physical education staff and employees of institutions, industries and corporations (clause 3.3, 2016).
• Days with your supervisor. At least 120 working days over the whole PhD at the supervisor’s department or research centre, not counting coursework (clause 13.5, 2016). Over four years, about 30 days a year.
• Duration. A part-time scholar may submit after four years and within six (clause 13.2, 2016).
• Fees. Bangalore University’s 2026 notice says all part-time scholars pay the general merit fee, whatever their category, including scholars with disabilities.
• Research centres. If your research centre is a college rather than a university department, the 2026 notice rules out the campus hostel, scholarships and laptops.

For social scientists there is also ISEC at Nagarbhavi. Its rules set no age limit for part-time or external scholars, and the degree comes from the University of Mysore or Bangalore University.

What happens if you change jobs or get transferred mid-PhD?

Plan for this before you enrol.

• Find out whether your job title counts. VTU’s clause 2.3(2) speaks of teaching staff and “research staff” of organisations. A delivery manager at an IT services firm should ask the research centre, in writing, whether that role qualifies before paying the VTU-ETR fee.
• Check your organisation’s age and R&D status for IISc. The ERP wants at least five years of existence and adequate research facilities for a PhD, and prefers (without requiring) DSIR recognition.
• Identify the person at work who will co-supervise. IISc needs a joint supervisor with a PhD, three years of post-doctoral experience and five years of service left. Plenty of teams in Whitefield and Electronics City have nobody who fits.
• Count your leave. A CHRIST scholar loses weekends for six months; a VTU scholar needs about 30 days a year at the centre; an IISc ERP scholar needs a full term or two up front.
• Ask HR about transfers. Under the ERP, moving to another organisation or place of work before you submit cancels the registration.

The institutions handle a change differently. At IISc, moving employer before you submit ends the ERP registration. At VTU, a change of supervisor needs NOCs from the old and new supervisors and centres, and the new supervisor must work at a VTU research centre in your field (clause 11.5); switching from part-time to full-time is allowed only in the first year (clause 11.14). Bangalore University’s 2016 regulations let the Doctoral Committee approve a switch either way “on valid grounds” (clause 13.4). ISEC allows a fellowship holder to convert to part-time only after two years (rule 9.1).
