Which Bengaluru research institutes admit PhD scholars, and who awards the degree?

The list below covers the institutes whose 2026 notices or programme pages we could read.

Having so many in one city helps. A biology postgraduate with a JGEEBILS score, for instance, can interview at NCBS, inStem and IISc without leaving town.

Which entrance test gets you an interview at which institute?

Map your scores against the institutes before you pay any application fees. From the TIFR GS-2026 eligibility table and each institute’s notice:

• JEST: the main route to RRI and IIA, and one of four routes into ICTS physics. IISc’s mid-year notice also lists it.
• TIFR GS test (JGEEBILS for biology): NCBS and ICTS, and the only score CAM accepts for its mathematics PhD. IISc and inStem also take JGEEBILS scores.
• CSIR-UGC NET (JRF): JNCASR’s September round, RRI, IIA, ICTS, NCBS, IISc and the AcSIR labs. A lectureship-only NET does not qualify at IISc or JNCASR.
• GATE: IISc engineering and NCBS (top 5 percentile, or top 10 with six months of research experience). RRI accepts GATE physics; IIA wants it above the 95th percentile.
• No national score: ISI’s Junior Research Fellowship selects through its own test and interview, and AcSIR admits self-sponsored engineering candidates and its own project staff. Elsewhere, expect to need one.

The percentile bars matter. NCBS’s August 2026 page asked for a national exam score above the 95th percentile, though it would also consider GATE candidates in the top 10 percentile, or NET qualifiers without JRF, who had six months of continuous research experience. IIA’s eligibility page adds two conditions many applicants miss: at least 60% marks throughout your academic career, and an age limit of 28 at admission.

What changes when the degree comes from JNU, Pondicherry or RCB rather than the institute?

You do your research in Bengaluru, but you are registered with another body, and that registration usually comes later than you expect.

• RRI. The 2026 admission poster says research students are registered for the PhD with JNU only after completing the first-year coursework and the other requirements for confirming their candidature. RRI also takes part in the Joint Astronomy Programme with IISc.
• IIA. The IIA-PU PhD runs with Pondicherry University, starting with a year of classroom coursework in astrophysics and a three-month project. The integrated M.Tech.-PhD (Tech.) in astronomical instrumentation is different: by IIA’s programme page, the first year is spent in Kolkata at the University of Calcutta’s Department of Applied Optics and Photonics before students return to IIA.
• NCBS and ICTS. Students register for a PhD at TIFR, a deemed university. NCBS says this usually happens one and a half to two years after joining, after coursework and a qualifying examination.
• inStem. Scholars are registered at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology, again only after coursework and a qualifying examination on biological fundamentals and research design.

In practice this means two sets of rules. The institute runs your coursework, committee meetings and daily supervision; the degree-awarding university’s regulations govern registration, thesis submission and the degree certificate. When you are offered a seat, ask for both documents. And if your employer or a future selection board asks which university your PhD is from, the honest answer is the awarding body, not the lab.

How do CSIR-NAL and CSIR-4PI take PhD students through AcSIR?

The two CSIR laboratories in Bengaluru, the National Aerospace Laboratories (with campuses at Kodihalli on HAL Airport Road and at Belur) and the CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute on the NAL Belur campus, do not award degrees. Their PhD students are enrolled with AcSIR, which describes itself as covering 78 research institutes, and you apply on AcSIR’s own portal.

AcSIR’s August 2026 notice closed on 14 April 2026, with a fee of ₹1,000 (₹500 for SC/ST/PwD). The eligible categories, as the August 2026 notice sets them out:

• PhD (Science): a valid national fellowship (CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT, INSPIRE, RGNF and others), or temporary project staff of an AcSIR institute with an NOC, or a permanent employee sponsored by an industry or AcSIR institute.
• PhD (Engineering): all of the above, plus self-sponsored candidates. For a mechanical or aerospace M.Tech. graduate without GATE, few other research institutes in Bengaluru will even consider the application.

The version of the notice published by CSIR-CFTRI puts selection by aptitude test or interview at the institute itself. When do Bengaluru’s research institutes take applications?

Most of the year’s decisions happen between February and July. Dates below are from the 2026 notices; the next cycle’s dates will differ.

• February to March: IISc’s August-session window (11 February to 23 March 2026) and ISI’s applications (12 February to 26 March 2026, extended).
• March to April: NCBS’s national-exam route (applications to 31 March 2026) and AcSIR’s August session (to 14 April 2026). ICTS says its TIFR GS-based interviews are typically held in March and April.
• April and May: IIA (2 April to 11 May 2026, extended), RRI (extended to 17 May 2026) and the ISI admission test (10 May 2026).
• May to July: RRI interviews (tentatively May and June 2026), and ICTS interviews for JEST, GATE and NET candidates, typically June and July.
• September to November: JNCASR’s September round (11 to 30 September 2026) and IISc’s January-session window (6 to 26 October 2026).

JNCASR’s September round is small and late, and easy to miss. Its brochure invited NET-JRF holders to six units (not the Evolutionary and Organismal Biology Unit), with the degree to be completed by 30 September 2026. It is a second chance for anyone who got JRF in the summer and missed the spring deadlines.

Which Bengaluru institute suits your master’s degree?

M.Sc. Physics. Write JEST. It opens RRI, IIA and ICTS at once, and RRI’s 2026 requirement list showed 25 openings across its four groups, the largest share in soft condensed matter. Apply to IISc as well if you also have GATE or NET-JRF.

M.Sc. in a life science. JGEEBILS plus a JRF covers NCBS, inStem and IISc. If you have JRF but a modest percentile, look at JNCASR’s molecular biology and neuroscience units, which asked for NET-JRF and interviewed from there.

M.Sc. Mathematics or Statistics. ISI’s Bengaluru centre for statistics, mathematics and quality, reliability and operations research, the TIFR GS mathematics test for CAM and ICTS, and IISc’s mathematics department.

M.E. or M.Tech. IISc if you have GATE; CSIR-NAL through AcSIR if you do not; JNCASR’s engineering mechanics unit if you hold NET-JRF.

Stipends at these institutes follow the national scale. RRI, JNCASR and IIA each quoted ₹37,000 monthly in years one and two, rising to ₹42,000, and RRI adds a ₹50,000 book grant over five years.
