Who runs PhD admissions in Bengaluru, and what does each one test?

The city’s national labs (NCBS, JNCASR, RRI, IIA and others) have their own routes, set out on our research institutes in Bengaluru page.

One thing to settle before anything else: which body will award your degree. A scholar at a VTU research centre in a Bengaluru engineering college is a VTU scholar, and the thesis goes to VTU in Belagavi. A scholar at ISEC registers with the University of Mysore or Bangalore University, not with ISEC, because the institute describes itself as not a degree-awarding institution. Those choices decide whose regulations you will live under for five or six years.

Why do Bangalore University and Bengaluru City University admissions look so alike?

Bengaluru City University, now named Dr. Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University (DMSBCU), follows the Bangalore University Ph.D. Regulations 2024, so its test and merit list read almost word for word like Bangalore University’s. The difference is the campus and the subjects: Jnana Bharathi for Bangalore University, the Central College campus on Dr. Ambedkar Veedhi for DMSBCU.

What the Bangalore University notification of 31 January 2026 sets out:

• Two streams. An entrance stream and a non-entrance stream. UGC or CSIR JRF, INSPIRE, ICMR and ICSSR fellows, and project fellows on funded projects, are selected on the interview alone by the department’s Research Advisory Committee.
• The test. 100 marks in 120 minutes, 50 multiple-choice questions of two marks each, split between research methodology (on the UGC-NET syllabus) and the subject. Papers are set by external examiners in English, except for PhDs in regional languages.
• The merit list. Only candidates with 50% in the test (45% for SC/ST/Category-I/OBC/PwD) count. Their test marks and qualifying-degree marks are combined 50:50, and the combined figure must reach 55% (50% for reserved categories).
• Paperwork. A hard copy of the online form goes to the department chairperson (by 11 March in 2026). Kalyana Karnataka candidates need the Article 371(J) certificate at counselling.
• Research centres. Research-centre scholars, including those at government colleges, get no campus hostel, scholarship or laptop, and the college must undertake not to move your supervisor before you submit.

The 2026 test was held on 5 July, according to the university’s circular of 10 July 2026: five months after the forms opened.

DMSBCU’s notification of 18 February 2026 uses two forms, A for the entrance stream and B for the exempted stream, and lets you apply under both with separate fees (for general and OBC candidates, ₹3,630 in the entrance stream and ₹2,420 in the exempted stream). Its vacancy list was dominated by commerce and management, with biotechnology next. JRF holders may apply at any time of year.

How does the VTU-ETR decide engineering and management PhD seats?

For an engineering, architecture or management PhD outside IISc, you will almost certainly apply to VTU. The university sits in Belagavi but recognises research centres in engineering colleges across the state, Bengaluru’s included; ask your college whether its department is one.

The route, from the VTU Ph.D. Regulations 2023 and the VTU-ETR-2026 notification:

1. Apply on jnanashodha.vtu.ac.in. For 2026 the window was 1 to 21 September, with the test tentatively on 11 October. The fee was ₹2,000, or ₹1,000 for SC/ST/Category-I/PwD.
2. Sit the VTU-ETR, unless you are exempt. It is 100 marks of MCQs, scaled down to 70. To qualify you need 35 of those 70 (31 for SC/ST/OBC/PwD). A qualifying score stays valid for two academic years.
3. Upload a research proposal and preferably three supervisors, with their vacancy positions, on the same portal (clause 4.3).
4. Present the proposal to a faculty-wise expert committee at the pre-registration interview, marked out of 30.
5. Allotment. VTU, not the college, allots the supervisor and research centre in merit order, with ETR-qualified candidates ranked on ETR plus interview marks.

VTU’s Jnana Yaana doctoral fellowship is paid only in its own departments at Belagavi, Mysuru, Kalaburagi and Muddenahalli, so a Bengaluru research-centre scholar should not count on it. Our VTU thesis format guide covers the other end of the programme.

What does IISc ask for that the state universities do not?

A national score, and an interview in person. The 2026–27 admission notice sets the rule by degree. A valid GATE score or NET-JRF is mandatory for a B.E., B.Tech. or 4-year B.S., and also for a master’s in science, economics, geography, psychology, management, commerce, operations research or computer science. It is only “desirable” for a master’s in engineering, technology, architecture, agriculture, pharmacy or veterinary science. JGEEBILS scores count for the life sciences, and NEET-PG or INI-CET for the medical sciences and public health PhDs.

IISc admits twice a year, but the second intake is narrower. The main August session opened on 11 February 2026 and closed for research programmes on 23 March. The mid-year notice of 2 September 2026 covers only some departments for January 2027, among them aerospace, civil, electrical, mechanical, computer science and automation, and physics. It set the application window as 6 to 26 October 2026 and the interviews as 16 to 20 November, and it allows candidates interviewed in May 2026 to apply again.

Our advice: with a GATE score, apply to IISc and a state university in the same year. IISc departments take few scholars.

How do CHRIST, JAIN, NLSIU and ISEC run their own selections?

CHRIST selects in one in-person sitting at the campus you choose (Central, Kengeri, Bannerghatta Road or Yeshwanthpur). Its FAQ describes the entrance as 90 questions in 80 minutes, on research methodology, reasoning, data analysis, general knowledge and your subject; exempted candidates sit a 60-question skill assessment. A proposal presentation and interview follow, so bring the proposal printed.

JAIN ran its August 2026 batch with applications from 1 June to 5 July, the entrance on 11 July and interviews on 8 August. Each half of its test mixes 30 marks of MCQs with 20 of descriptive answers, which rewards candidates who can write.

NLSIU at Nagarbhavi is the route for a law or public-policy PhD. For 2026–27 the deadline was extended from 23 to 30 March, and the NLSAT-Ph.D. was held on 26 April. A corrigendum in April 2026 made the test a qualifying stage (50 marks needed), with selection then resting equally on the written proposal and the oral presentation. The proposal must be written without outside help or AI tools, and the ₹50,000 monthly fellowship is not paid to anyone in paid employment.

ISEC, next door to Bangalore University, takes social-science scholars into centre-based programmes (economics, population studies and development studies among them for 2026–27). The 2026–27 written test was on 15 July and the final list came on 23 July. Under rule 8.2, maintenance is paid during the ten-month coursework, after which you must secure a national fellowship to stay on the regular fellowship programme.

Does KSET or a lectureship-only NET get you in anywhere in Bengaluru?

Many Bengaluru applicants hold KSET, Karnataka’s state eligibility test, or a UGC-NET without JRF. Where these help, and where they do not:

• Bangalore University and DMSBCU: KSET, SLET, NET and GATE (with a valid score) all exempt you from the entrance. Without a fellowship, you are ranked on your PG marks and then interviewed.
• VTU: clause 4.2.2 of the 2023 regulations exempts UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, SLET, GATE and CAT holders, and M.Phil. holders, from VTU-ETR. You still face the pre-registration interview.
• CHRIST: NET, SLET, SET, KSET, GATE or an M.Phil. replaces the entrance test, but not the skill assessment, which everyone sits.
• JAIN: NET, SLET or GATE takes you straight to the interview.
• IISc: a lectureship-only NET does not count. The admission notice says candidates who qualified only for Lectureship or Assistant Professorship are not eligible to apply through the NET route.
• NLSIU and ISEC: everyone sits the written test. No national score replaces it.

A NET or KSET also changes how you are ranked at the state universities, not just whether you sit a test. In the Bangalore University non-entrance stream, a candidate without a fellowship is ranked on PG marks alone, so a strong master’s matters more there than in the entrance stream.
