Finding a Periyar University PhD guide in Salem

What do Periyar’s centre and supervisor lists show, and what do they leave out?

Periyar puts both lists online. The Directorate of Research page links a list of centres and a list of supervisors, each drawn from its research portal. The university’s own links point to a bare server address that did not load for us; the same lists open at research.periyaruniversity.ac.in, which is where our links go.

The supervisor list gives each guide’s name, rank (Professor, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor), discipline, department and serving institution. It had 608 names on 27 September 2026, spread across Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. It does not show how many scholars each guide already has, or whether they have a place this session. Regulation 9.7 says the specialisations and vacancies are collected before each session and a discipline-wise rank list is published, so the vacancy picture comes with the admission process, not before it.

Here is how Salem itself looks on the two lists:

Government Arts College, Salem-7 is the college to look at first for most arts and science subjects. Its 62 listed supervisors include ten in Physics and several each in Tamil, Chemistry, Commerce, Statistics and Geology. Sri Sarada’s 35 are strongest in Tamil, Chemistry and English. The Regional Sericultural Research Station is on the centre list as an R&D centre, which clause 10.2.8 allows for laboratories inside the university’s area, but no supervisor on the list gives it as their institution. Vysya College appears on neither list. Beyond the city, Arignar Anna Government Arts College in Attur, Bharathiyar Arts and Science College for Women and Vivekanandha Arts and Science College for Women at Veerachipalayam each have two or three supervisors listed.

What decides your rank in Periyar’s single-window admission?

Clause 9 of the 2024 regulations runs admission through one window at the university. You apply online naming as many as five centres or supervisors, ranked by preference; a discipline-wise rank list is drawn up, it is matched with the vacancies at the centres, and supervisors are allotted at interview or counselling. Your rank is built like this:

• Priority first. NET-JRF or another national fellowship ranks above NET, NET above SET or SLET, and all of them above a pass in Periyar’s own test (clause 9.6(a)).
• Then marks. The entrance test carries 70, your PG marks 20 and the interview 10 (clause 9.6(b)). Clause 9.1(b) normalises PG marks, so a score from an autonomous college or a deemed university is adjusted before it counts.
• Then the Tamil Nadu roster. Applicants from other states are open category (clause 9.5).

Periyar has held two sessions a year, July and December. The July 2026 circular opened applications on 29 June 2026 and closed online submission on 31 July, and a later circular fixed the entrance test for 19 September 2026 on the university campus. NET, SET and SLET holders had to fill an extra format with the application or be left out. The December 2025 circular let those who had passed the July 2025 test apply without writing it again.

Why might a listed Salem guide still be unable to take you?

Being on the list is only the first test. Several rules in the 2024 regulations remove names from your five, and the first one hits working scholars hardest.

The part-time half. Clause 7.1 allows 8, 6 and 4 scholars for a Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor. Clause 7.2 then caps part-timers at half of that. Of the 608 names on the list, 426 are Assistant Professors, so for most Salem guides the real part-time limit is two. A school teacher from Attur hoping to register part-time under an Assistant Professor at Government Arts College should first ask how many part-timers that guide already has.

• The guide is under the age bar: younger than 58 and more than two calendar years from retirement on the day you register (clause 7.7).
• A place will actually open. A vacancy arises only when one of the guide’s scholars submits a thesis or has the registration cancelled (clause 7.4).
• If you are part-time, the guide’s part-time half is not already full (clause 7.2).
• The guide has not told the university they will sit this session out. Clause 9.10 lets supervisors decline a session, with reasons, before admission starts.
• Your PG discipline matches the guide’s, or you have argued the interdisciplinary case in your application; the discipline cannot change afterwards (clause 9.8).

Recognition rules also shape who is listed. Under clause 6.1, a Professor or Associate Professor needs two years after the PhD and five papers beyond it, two of them in Web of Science or Scopus journals; an Assistant Professor needs two papers, one indexed. A regular teacher at a self-financing college must also attach the university’s “Qualification Approval” (clause 6.3). The guideship application form asks each applicant for their date of retirement and their indexed papers since the PhD.

Can you register part-time with Periyar if you work in Bengaluru or Hosur?

Often yes. Periyar’s part-time categories (clause 2.2.2) are:

• faculty of a Periyar department or affiliated college, or of any institution within Periyar’s jurisdiction affiliated to a technical university;
• high school and higher secondary teachers in Tamil Nadu with two years of continuous service;
• anyone else in a regular job “within Tamil Nadu and Bangalore”, with two years of continuous service after the qualifying degree;
• arts and science teachers in government-recognised polytechnics in Tamil Nadu, and research, technical and office staff of the university with two years’ service.

The Bangalore clause matters for Salem and Krishnagiri residents employed by Bengaluru companies; a job in Hosur is already covered as Tamil Nadu. You need a service certificate and a No Objection Certificate from your employer (clause 2.2.2.7).

Plan the time on site. A part-timer spends at least 60 days (120 in a laboratory subject) at the research centre under the supervisor over the whole period, certified with the annual progress report (clause 5.2). Full-time is stricter: 80% attendance a year (clause 5.1.3), and a 2023 attendance circular bars full-time scholars from any job, full or part-time, until the thesis is submitted. What happens if your guide at a Salem government college is transferred?

It is a real risk here. Government Arts College, Salem-7 and the Government Arts College for Women, Salem-8 hold 72 of the city’s listed supervisors, and government college teachers move on transfer. Clause 8 of the regulations covers each case:

• Transfer to another Periyar college with a recognised centre: you continue with the same guide and pay a fee to change centre (clause 8.7).
• Transfer to a Periyar college whose department is not a research centre: you either change to another supervisor in the same institution, for a fee, or stay on there with a co-supervisor from that college (clause 8.8).
• Transfer outside Periyar’s area: if you have only finished coursework, you move to another supervisor recognised at your centre; if your synopsis or thesis is in, you keep the guide and add a co-supervisor from your centre (clause 8.10).

A guide in a department that is not a research centre can still take you, but with conditions. Clause 9.4 needs the head of a recognised centre to agree in writing to host you, and you then work and sign attendance there; clause 10.2.2 limits such guides to part-time scholars.
