Why does a Kolkata social-science PhD so often carry another institution’s degree?

Because two of the six main routes are research centres that register their scholars with a university, and ISI awards its own degree in only one social science:

Two more are worth knowing if they fit your field. IIM Calcutta at Joka runs a doctoral programme with specialisations in economics and in public policy and management, which admits through CAT or other tests listed by specialisation and pays a stipend starting at ₹42,000 a month according to its programme FAQ. How does CSSSC in Patuli choose its PhD scholars?

The Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta sits at Baishnabghata Patuli Township in the south of the city. Its PhD programme is affiliated to Jadavpur University: you research under a CSSSC faculty member, register with JU, and take a JU degree. The 2025 announcement set out how it works, and it is worth reading closely because CSSSC is strict about fit.

• Named sub-fields only. Proposals outside the listed areas were cancelled. For 2025 these ranged from labour and development economics, and trade and health economics, to critical caste studies, political thought, cinema and politics, urban and transport geography, and the political economy of natural resources and of cities. Development studies proposals had to draw on heterodox economics, critical geography or the anthropology or sociology of development.
• A 1,000-word proposal. It had to state the research problem and questions, review the literature critically and explain the method, with a title and bibliography. The Centre screens proposals for a supervisor before it prepares the shortlist.
• A short written test. Two essay questions, one on research methodology and one on the discipline, for 20 marks; 10 was the pass mark for the general category. In economics, both questions leaned on mathematical economics. Holders of NET, SET, GATE and similar results were exempt, and a notice of 9 October 2025 extended the exemption to NTA’s PhD-only certificates valid until 26 December 2025.
• Interview and ranking. You present your research interest to the Centre’s PhD Research Committee, and the merit list weighs the test or national score against the interview at 70:30.

The 2025 call opened on 13 August, closed on 4 September, held the test on 14 October and interviewed in mid-November. Up to 15 were to be admitted. Enrolment cost ₹25,000, paid at Jadavpur University’s cash counter, plus ₹1,000 a year to CSSSC and a refundable ₹2,000 library deposit. If you are not ready to apply, the Centre also runs a paid Research Training Programme for master’s graduates who want to read across the social sciences before a PhD; the 2026–27 intake asked for a writing sample of 2,000 to 3,000 words.

What is IDSK’s PhD in Development Studies, and who is it for?

The Institute of Development Studies Kolkata was set up by the West Bengal government in 2002, is fully funded by it, and has been an ICSSR-recognised institute since 2014. As a “sister institute” of the University of Calcutta it has run its own PhD in Development Studies since 2016. A Research Advisory Committee named by the Vice-Chancellor oversees it, and the supervisors are IDSK’s own faculty.

The 2026 prospectus is the one to read. It welcomed postgraduates from any discipline with 55% (50% for SC, ST and OBC) and capped the batch at 12. Candidates without NET, SET, GATE, a JRF, a teacher fellowship or an M.Phil. (or an M.Tech., MD or similar degree) sat a written test on 30 October 2025; the rest went straight to interview, and the interview alone decided selection. The timetable ran from applications (form fee ₹1,000, ₹500 for SC, ST and PH candidates) to interviews on 4 and 5 December 2025 and a selection list expected on 5 January 2026.

The coursework year is spent at IDSK in Salt Lake. The first semester covers perspectives in development studies and research methodology; the second offers specialised modules in economics, sociology, political science, history and regional development. You register with the University of Calcutta only after defending your research proposal at a registration seminar. One point to note: the prospectus still says the programme follows the University’s 2016 PhD regulations, although the University adopted new regulations in February 2026. Ask IDSK which set will govern your registration.

How did the University of Calcutta’s social-science departments admit in 2025 and 2026?

The old route was a Research Entrance Test set by each department; Economics held its last one in January 2026 at the department on B.T. Road, and Political Science admits at the Alipore campus.

From 12 February 2026 the University’s new regulations replaced the RET with a national or state score and an interview, weighted 70:30. Anthropology and Human Rights were among the departments in the first call under those rules, in June 2026. What do Presidency and Jadavpur offer economists, sociologists and political scientists?

Presidency University’s 2026–27 odd-cycle notice gave economics and history 14 seats each, sociology and political science 8 each, geography 10 and philosophy 3, all for UGC-NET or CSIR-NET holders only. Economics is classed as a Ph.D. (Science) at Presidency and asked for a master’s in economics or applied economics, in any area of theoretical or applied economics. Political Science listed its open areas, from Indian foreign policy and electoral politics to Dalit politics, migration and the politics of North East India. History named topics such as the Eastern Himalayan borderlands and tea plantation economies. Sociology left the field open. With a 500-word synopsis as the first filter, match your proposal to a listed area before anything else.

Jadavpur University’s Faculty of Arts runs its own PhD calls through the PhD Cell (Arts) at Subarna Jayanti Bhavan, separate from the science and engineering faculties, and its 2025–26 round was still filling vacant seats in June 2026. Can you research economics or sociology at ISI without an ISI degree?

Yes, and many people do not realise how the Indian Statistical Institute splits this. Its Social Sciences Division has five units in Kolkata: the Economic Research Unit, Sociological Research Unit, Linguistic Research Unit, Population Studies Unit and Psychology Research Unit. But the 2026–27 prospectus is clear that ISI’s own doctorate exists in just five subjects, and of the social sciences only quantitative economics is among them.

So the routes differ by field. For quantitative economics, ISI’s own Junior Research Fellowship had 8 seats through its test channel in 2026–27, across Kolkata, Delhi and Tezpur. You need a master’s with economics, mathematics or statistics at undergraduate or postgraduate level, you sit two written tests and an interview, and the degree is ISI’s. For sociology, linguistics, psychology or population studies, the degree must come from another university. Under ISI’s 2026 admission notice, a scholar who already holds an outside JRF (UGC, CSIR, ICMR and others) can write to the relevant unit head, in any month, to be hosted at ISI while the thesis goes to another institution.

If your work is quantitative, ISI is the natural place to look. If it is qualitative or historical, CSSSC or IDSK will suit you better, and your research proposal should make clear which tradition you work in.
