Research institutes in Kolkata for a PhD

Which institutes in Kolkata admit PhD scholars, and whose degree do they give?

Read the last column first: it names the body you will actually graduate from. The second matters too, because IISER Kolkata is not in the city at all but at Mohanpur in Nadia district.

Why does an S. N. Bose Centre PhD carry a university’s name?

The S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences is a Department of Science and Technology institute, not a university. Its 2026–27 advertisement (30 April 2026) says scholars register with a supervisor, complete the prescribed coursework, and are awarded the doctoral degree through registration at the University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University or Presidency University. So you live with two sets of rules: the Centre’s for coursework and fellowship, the university’s for registration and thesis.

Admission is by interview, and the qualifying scores are set department by department:

• Astrophysics and high-energy physics: JEST up to AIR 300, NET-JRF, NET lectureship up to AIR 100, GATE up to AIR 500, a provisionally selected INSPIRE, or an NBHM doctoral scholarship.
• Chemical and biological sciences: any JEST, NET-JRF or DBT-JRF qualification, NET lectureship up to AIR 100, or GATE up to AIR 1,000.
• Condensed matter and materials: JEST or GATE up to AIR 500, NET-JRF, or NET lectureship up to AIR 100.

You also need 60% in the M.Sc. or M.Tech. (55% for reserved categories). The programme is fully residential. Applications for 2026–27 ran online from 3 to 17 May. B.Sc. graduates can enter its Integrated PhD instead (age limit 24), taking a University of Calcutta M.Sc. on the way and registering the PhD there.

What is the pre-doctoral year at SINP and VECC?

Both are Department of Atomic Energy centres, and both appear among the campuses of the Homi Bhabha National Institute, a deemed university. What sets them apart is the year of coursework you do before research starts.

SINP. The Post-M.Sc. course began in 1953 on Meghnad Saha’s initiative and has been the compulsory first year of every SINP doctorate since 1993–94, ending with a project, ideally on your future thesis topic. The August 2026 intake page expected about 35 scholars and took applications until an extended 25 May. Physics applicants needed CSIR or UGC NET (July 2024 onwards, Categories 1 and 2 only), GATE physics from 2024, or JEST from 2025; life and chemical sciences took JGEEBILS 2026, a CSIR, UGC or DBT JRF, or GATE. SINP said in capitals that it would hold no written test, and offered interviews online or in person. Scholars are paid as SINP JRFs: ₹37,000 a month, then ₹42,000 as SRF, for five years including the course year. The page named each open topic and its guide.

VECC. Its advertisement VECC-2/2026 offered nine fellowships, closing on 31 May 2026, to M.Sc. physics graduates with 55% who held a UGC-CSIR NET fellowship, a JEST score or GATE in physics. Lectureship-only NET was not eligible, and the age limit was 28 on 31 May. Selection was on the interview alone, held at the Bidhan Nagar campus, and your research topic is decided later, on how you do in the pre-PhD coursework. GATE and JEST fellows are paid ₹37,000 monthly in the first two years, then ₹42,000, plus ₹60,000 a year in contingency.

How do IACS and ISI select for their own doctorates?

IACS is a deemed university in its own right. The Autumn 2026 advertisement (12 March 2026) listed openings school by school, each with its essential qualification: most asked for an M.Sc. with a CSIR or UGC JRF, INSPIRE or similar fellowship, and a few named M.Tech. holders. The School of Chemical Sciences had the most, including 11 in theoretical and computational chemistry. You needed 55% in the master’s and had to be under 28 on the closing date, which moved from 30 April to 7 May 2026. Joining costs a ₹15,000 admission fee and a ₹10,000 caution deposit.

ISI runs the only large PhD entry in Kolkata that needs no national test. Its 2026–27 prospectus set JRF seats through the ISI test: 11 in statistics, 10 in mathematics, 8 in quantitative economics, 15 in computer science, spread across its centres. In statistics, mathematics and quantitative economics you sit two written tests and then an interview, and the fellowship was ₹37,000 a month. The limit is the degree. ISI awards its PhD only in those subjects and in quality, reliability and operations research. Its fellows in physics and applied mathematics (6 seats, Kolkata and Tezpur), geology (2) and human genetics (2), the last two in Kolkata, must register with another university for the degree. Holders of an outside JRF may also apply to an ISI unit head at any time of year to do their PhD at ISI with the degree from elsewhere.

What does a PhD at CSIR-IICB or CSIR-CGCRI involve?

Both CSIR laboratories stand in Jadavpur, close to IACS and the university, and both award the degree through AcSIR. CSIR-IICB’s programme page says it offers PhDs in chemical and biological sciences across six research divisions, from cancer biology to structural biology and bioinformatics. Its JRF route is open to CSIR-UGC NET (JRF), DBT-JRF, DST-INSPIRE and ICMR-JRF holders. The lab’s advice is practical: watch its careers portal for positions in individual labs, and write directly to the scientists in the division you want. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed and then register with AcSIR.

AcSIR runs two sessions a year. Its notices closed on 31 October 2025 for January 2026 and on 14 April 2026 for August 2026, and the January 2027 notice, posted by IICB in September 2026, set 31 October 2026 as its closing date. Under the August 2026 eligibility rules, a science PhD needs a national fellowship, or project-staff or sponsored status with an employer’s NOC. The engineering PhD also admits self-sponsored candidates, which matters at CGCRI: it has advertised both science and engineering PhDs in past AcSIR rounds and posts each notice on its own careers page.

What should you check with Bose Institute and IISER Kolkata?

Bose Institute, founded by J. C. Bose in 1917, says it runs two PhD rounds a year, with sessions beginning around January and July. The newest advertisement on its site when we checked was for the Spring 2025 session: 48 vacancies, applications to 22 May 2025, interviews in June, an age limit of 28, and fellowships of ₹37,000 as JRF. It said GATE, JEST or NET-LS holders without a fellowship could apply for a few institute fellowships. The advertisement does not say which university awards the degree. Write to the Dean’s office and get that answer in writing before you accept.

IISER Kolkata awards its own PhD. Its application portal lists eight departments, including Humanities and Social Sciences (other social-science options are on our social sciences in Kolkata page), admits in autumn and spring, and was preparing its Spring 2027 call in September 2026 (Space Sciences will not take scholars that session). The fee was ₹200 (₹100 for SC, ST and PwD). Shortlisted candidates need two recommendation letters sent directly by referees, and no travel allowance is paid for the interview.

Is a JRF essential, or will GATE, JEST or a lectureship NET do?

It depends on the institute, and Kolkata’s physics centres lean heavily on JEST.

• A CSIR or UGC JRF is accepted almost everywhere on this page. CSIR-IICB’s JRF route takes it along with DBT-JRF, INSPIRE and ICMR-JRF, and SINP’s life and chemical sciences accept only a CSIR, UGC or DBT JRF among NET results.
• NET lectureship (Category 2) counts at SINP for physics, and at the S. N. Bose Centre within a rank limit (up to AIR 100 in 2026–27). VECC’s 2026 call said lectureship-only NET was not eligible.
• JEST is the physicist’s key: the S. N. Bose Centre (any qualified rank in chemical and biological sciences, up to AIR 300 in astrophysics), SINP (2025 onwards) and VECC.
• GATE works at SINP, VECC (physics), the S. N. Bose Centre (up to AIR 500 or 1,000 by department) and, for engineering, at AcSIR labs.
• JGEEBILS is accepted by SINP’s life-science stream (the 2026 test) and listed by Bose Institute.
• No national score at all: only ISI’s own JRF test, and AcSIR’s engineering PhD, which admits self-sponsored candidates.

Who pays is a separate question from admission. At IICB your JRF agency pays you; SINP and ISI pay their own fellows, and so does VECC for its GATE and JEST fellows. Most calls cluster in spring, so have your scores by March:

• March to May: IACS advertised on 12 March 2026 and closed on 7 May. The S. N. Bose Centre took forms from 3 to 17 May, SINP until an extended 25 May and VECC until 31 May. The ISI admission test was on 10 May.
• Mid-April: AcSIR’s August session. The 2026 notice closed on 14 April.
• May and June: interviews, such as IACS chemistry on 18 and 19 May 2026 and IISER Kolkata physics on 18 and 19 June.
• October and November: AcSIR’s January session (closing 31 October 2026 for January 2027, and 31 October 2025 the year before) and IISER Kolkata’s spring-session interviews, held in November in 2025.
