Which Kolkata universities and institutes take PhD scholars, and on what test?

The table covers the three state universities that run large PhD intakes in the city and three institutes with their own calls. IIM Calcutta at Joka runs a separate doctoral programme in management, entered through CAT or another listed test; it closed its 2026 window on 30 January.

Note where the West Bengal SET counts. Calcutta and Jadavpur’s science faculty accept it; Presidency names only UGC and CSIR NET, so SET alone will not get you in there. MAKAUT, the state technological university, has its main campus at Haringhata in Nadia, not in the city.

What changed at the University of Calcutta under its 2025 PhD regulations?

The old system of a department-run Research Entrance Test has gone. The University of Calcutta Ph.D. Regulations, 2025 took effect on 12 February 2026, and regulation 4 now allows admission only through a national or state test followed by an interview before the Departmental Committee:

• NET Category 1 (JRF): interview alone, and priority when seats are allotted.
• NET Categories 2 and 3, SET, GATE and GPAT: 70% for the score, 30% for the interview. The NET mark counts for one year.
• An award letter with no score: selection on the interview.
• Engineering and technology: an M.Tech. holder with a Scopus or Web of Science paper, or a granted patent, may be selected on interview, though fellowship holders come first.

Your test subject has to match the department’s. The 100-mark interview tests research aptitude, subject knowledge and feasibility, and the committee allots your supervisor there, so read the supervisor-wise vacancy list each department must publish at least 15 days before.

The Cycle 1 notice of 9 June 2026 opened 32 subjects, and two corrigenda added 12 more, including Physics, History and Marine Science, for 44 in all. There is no fee and no portal: you print the form, attach attested copies and hand it in at the department, with a separate form for each subject. The closing date for the first 32 subjects was extended to 7 July 2026, and the last five subjects added took forms until 27 July.

Fees are modest. A 2026 fee notice sets ₹1,000 for admission, ₹5,000 each for registration and coursework, and ₹15,000 at thesis submission. You must join within three months of the offer letter, and complete at least 12 credits of coursework, including research and publication ethics, within two years; our coursework guide explains what those credits involve.

How does Jadavpur University admit PhD scholars in each faculty?

Jadavpur has no single PhD call. Each faculty council publishes its own notice under the JU Ph.D. Regulation 2024, with its own dates and its own office on the Jadavpur campus to receive forms. The university’s admission schedule page says PhD selection normally happens twice a year, in May–June and December–January, but the 2026 calls did not follow that neatly.

Engineering and pharmacy. The notice of 16 March 2026 for the July–December session listed 267 vacancies across 15 departments, with Mechanical Engineering (40) the largest. Forms went to the Dean’s office on the second floor of the TEQIP Building, with ₹500 for each department. NET, GATE, GPAT, CEED, INSPIRE or Visvesvaraya holders skip the WRET and are ranked 70% on that score, 30% on interview. Everyone else writes the department’s WRET, half research methodology and half subject. You need 50% in it (45% for reserved categories) and 50% in the interview. Papers differ: Architecture, Mechanical, Pharmaceutical Technology and Printing set 50 marks in an hour, Chemical, Computer Science and Power Engineering 100 marks in two hours, and most departments deducted 25% for a wrong answer.

Science. The notice of 24 June 2026 was only for candidates already holding NET, SET or GATE, with 189 vacancies: Chemistry 78, Physics 56, Life Science and Biotechnology 35, and a handful in Mathematics, Geological Sciences, Instrumentation Science and Geography. It said admission depends on the consent of the supervisor allotted, offered an optional supervisor consent form, and stated that no institutional fellowship is available.

Interdisciplinary Studies, Law and Management. Its first notification of 2026 covered seven schools, from Automotive Engineering (up to 21 seats) to Water Resources Engineering (up to 16) and Cognitive Science (up to 2). The same 70:30 rules apply, and forms were accepted from 24 June to 17 July.

Arts. We found no 2026–27 Arts call in September 2026. A notice of 7 May 2026 let scholars joining in 2025–26 pay the ₹25,000 admission fee in two halves of ₹12,500.

What does Presidency University ask for in its PhD call?

Presidency’s 2026–27 odd-cycle notice (reference PU/FC/517/PhD/notice/2026, 19 June 2026) is short and strict. Only UGC-NET or UGC-CSIR NET qualified candidates could apply, online, for ₹500 through SBI Collect, between 23 June and 3 July. The printed form, mark sheets, payment receipt and a synopsis of the proposed research in 500 words then had to reach the Secretary, Faculty Councils, at 86/1 College Street by 7 July.

The seat matrix listed 260 places in 17 departments. Physics had 48, Chemistry 40, Mathematics and Life Sciences 26 each, and the Institute of Health Sciences 16; Philosophy had 3 and Hindi 4. Several departments printed their open research areas with vacancies against each, so you can see whether anyone is taking scholars in your field.

Departments may shortlist on the synopsis, then interview, sometimes after a written test, so treat those 500 words as your first interview; our research proposal guide helps. Selection lists were expected in early August 2026. Mind one deadline: coursework exemption must be claimed by the day of the interview, and the notice says no request will be heard after that.

Is there still a route into a Kolkata PhD without NET?

A narrow one. With Calcutta, Presidency and Jadavpur’s science faculty all asking for a national or state test, four routes remain:

• Jadavpur’s engineering and pharmacy departments, through the WRET.
• Jadavpur’s interdisciplinary schools, through their WRET, though the Industrial Pollution Control school wanted NET or GATE regardless.
• ISI’s Junior Research Fellowship, through its own test in May, for statistics, mathematics, quantitative economics, computer science and a few other subjects. ISI awards its own PhD only in the first five areas its notice lists.
• Calcutta’s engineering departments, if you hold an M.Tech. with an indexed paper or a patent.

If you are in this position, apply to these and also register for NET or the West Bengal SET in the next cycle. Calcutta and Presidency both accept a Category 3 NET, the PhD-admission-only result. It will not bring a fellowship; for that you need a JRF, covered in our national fellowships guide.

In 2026 the Kolkata windows fell into four clusters:

• January and February: IIM Calcutta’s doctoral programme (closed 30 January 2026) and ISI’s form (opened 12 February).
• March: Jadavpur’s engineering and pharmacy call (forms 16 to 30 March 2026), IACS’s autumn advertisement (12 March) and ISI’s extended closing date (26 March).
• May: the ISI admission test (10 May 2026), the IACS deadline (extended to 7 May) and the S. N. Bose Centre’s window (3 to 17 May).
• June and July: the busy stretch. Calcutta’s Cycle 1 notice (9 June), Presidency’s odd cycle (23 June to 3 July), and Jadavpur’s science and interdisciplinary calls (both dated 24 June) all ran together in 2026.

What should an applicant from outside West Bengal check first?

A few West Bengal rules bite harder on applicants from other states than on local ones:

• Reserved-category certificates from other states do not count. Jadavpur’s 2026 engineering and interdisciplinary notices say SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD certificates issued outside West Bengal give no claim to a reserved seat. The interdisciplinary faculty makes an exception for a domicile certificate showing ten years’ residence in the state.
• OBC certificates need to be recent. Jadavpur’s engineering notice wanted OBC-A or OBC-B certificates issued on or after 1 April 2025, or an older one plus a current non-creamy-layer certificate.
• Paper still travels. Calcutta, Jadavpur and Presidency all wanted a printed form with attested copies delivered to an office in 2026. Jadavpur accepts forms by post but says it is not responsible for postal delay, so leave a margin.
• Interviews are held on campus. Budget for a trip to Kolkata for each university.

If your master’s degree is from a university outside the state, Calcutta’s regulation 4.9 says admission will go ahead only after its office has decided equivalence, so carry the syllabus and mark sheets. And keep watching the websites. All three universities post interview dates and selection lists online, and Calcutta’s notice says no separate intimation will be sent to individual applicants.
