Which Pune institution awards a PhD in which social science?

The split is unusually clean, so start from your subject.

If your subject is economics, you have a real choice between GIPE and SPPU’s Department of Economics. If it is sociology or history, the choice narrows: GIPE lists sociology among its degree subjects but offered no sociology seats in 2026–27, and the Symbiosis flyer states that SIU has no PhD programme in sociology or history.

How does the Gokhale Institute admit PhD scholars in 2026–27?

GIPE was founded in 1930 by the Servants of India Society and became a deemed university on 9 May 1993. Its 2026–27 PhD brochure has two modes that lead to the same degree:

• Regular PhD. There is no GIPE entrance test. JRF holders (UGC-NET, ICMR, CSIR, GATE, CEED or ICAR NET) are selected on interview alone. Candidates with a valid NET or GATE score but no JRF are ranked 70% on that score and 30% on the interview, and a JRF holder may choose that route instead.
• Executive PhD for Working Professionals (Part Time). You need a decade of work after your qualifying degree, in government, research, consulting, teaching, business or professional practice, and an employer NOC. GIPE sets its own entrance test (50% research methodology, 50% subject, pass mark 50%), weighted 70% with a 30% interview.

The dates for this cycle: applications from 17 September to 9 October 2026, the executive entrance test on 1 November, interviews on 1 and 2 November, and coursework from 26 November 2026. There are 20 seats, 12 regular and 8 executive, divided by subject into 12 in economics, 4 in agricultural economics and 4 in population studies. A research proposal of up to 3,000 words goes with the application. CA, CS and CMA qualifications count as a master’s degree for eligibility.

Coursework is one semester of 16 credits (research methodology, research and publication ethics, academic writing, empirical modelling and an advanced theory course, according to the doctoral programme page), and registration is confirmed once you pass it (a CGPA of at least 5.5) and defend your proposal. For executive scholars the Institute may schedule it as block teaching, weekend classes or short residencies, but the brochure insists the programme is not online and that you attend in person.

Fees differ sharply by mode. A regular scholar in the open category paid ₹54,000 in the first year of the 2026–32 batch (₹40,000 for SC and ST candidates). An executive scholar paid ₹2,44,400, of which ₹2,00,000 is tuition. The Dr D. R. Gadgil Library, with about 2,80,000 volumes, is the real draw for an economic historian.

What does Deccan College ask of archaeology, linguistics and Sanskrit scholars?

A UGC-NET result in the right subject, before anything else. Deccan College’s PhD rules, adopted by its Academic Council on 5 June 2025 for scholars admitted from 2024–25, say that a candidate with the educational qualification but without NET or JRF in a relevant subject is not eligible. There is no written entrance test of its own; the “entrance test” in the rules is an in-person interview.

• NET route: all three UGC-NET categories are accepted, and merit is 70% NET percentile and 30% interview. The rules count the percentile from the immediately previous NET cycle.
• JRF route: interview only. Lectureship-only NET, the national fellowships for SC, ST, OBC and PwD students awarded on a lectureship result, and DST INSPIRE do not qualify for this route.
• Relevant NET subjects are fixed by department. Archaeology accepts archaeology, history and several allied subjects, including Sanskrit traditional subjects; linguistics takes linguistics (code 31); Sanskrit and lexicography takes Sanskrit (codes 25 and 73), and knowledge of Sanskrit is compulsory.
• Coming from another discipline means showing the link to your department in the proposal, and then completing two extra semesters of coursework in archaeology or linguistics.

Admission opens once a year. You apply online, post a hard copy to the Academic Registrar at Yerawada, and attach a research proposal of no more than 1,000 words. Part-time registration is allowed on an employer NOC, at the same fee and duration as full-time, and you may switch between modes once. The thesis may be written in English, Marathi, Hindi or Sanskrit.

Can you get into an SPPU social-science department without a new PET?

Yes, if you hold an exempting score. SPPU’s humanities and social-science departments include economics, sociology, political science, anthropology, history, psychology, defence and strategic studies, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar studies and women’s and gender studies, among others (see the university’s department list). They admit under the same Ordinance 186 as every SPPU research centre. Under clause 3.2(c), any UGC-NET result (lectureship-only included), SET or similar national test excuses you from the PET, and selection then rests on an interview marked out of 100. A department’s interview committee is chaired by its head, with one internal and one outside subject expert and two nominees of the Vice-Chancellor, one of them for reservation.

The last PET ran in 2024. A corrigendum of 7 August 2024 set it in English and Marathi for economics, history, politics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, Pali, adult education, education, physical education and commerce, which matters to scholars from Marathi-medium colleges. Since then SPPU has admitted in rounds from that list and from exempted candidates: Circular 230/2025 invited exempted applicants from 1 September 2025, and interviews in the next round ended on 20 March 2026. SPPU said the next PET schedule would follow that round.

Two more things for social scientists. SPPU gives reservation only to Maharashtra candidates, so a reserved-category applicant from another state competes in the open list. What do IISER Pune, Symbiosis and MIT-WPU offer social scientists?

Each is narrower than its name suggests.

IISER Pune took humanities and social-science PhD scholars for August 2026 only with three named faculty members, whose areas that year were modern Indian political thought and Maharashtra’s intellectual history, the history of architecture and art with archaeology and epigraphy, and environmental and climate sociology. The admissions page asked for 60% in the master’s, NET (JRF, lectureship or PhD-only eligibility from 2024 or 2025), GATE or NBHM, and shortlisted on a two-page research plan. Applications ran from 10 to 25 March 2026, with interviews on campus on 4 and 5 May.

Symbiosis International runs PhDs in its Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and in allied faculties such as law, media and education, but its 2025 PhD flyer says there are no programmes in languages and literature, psychology, sociology or history. Sub-streams change each year with supervisor vacancies. Selection is 70% on SIU’s online PET and 30% on an interview, NET, SET and GATE holders skip the test, and two Scopus-indexed papers are required before thesis submission. SIU’s research centres include the Symbiosis Centre for Ambedkar Studies and the Symbiosis Centre for Urban Studies.

MIT-WPU lists PhD programmes in economics, sociology, psychology, peace studies, governance and public policy, education and English, among others, selected on its own PET or a national score, with tuition of ₹1,00,000 a year in 2026–27.

Can you write the thesis in Marathi, and where does the funding come from?

At Deccan College, yes, by rule. For an SPPU PhD, Ordinance 186 does not specify the thesis language, so settle it with your department before you register. The GIPE and IISER Pune documents we read say nothing on the point, so ask.

Funding is where Pune scholars most often go wrong. GIPE’s brochure says admission carries no fellowship of its own; your JRF or other award pays you. For many Maharashtra scholars in the social sciences, the likeliest sources are the state’s community fellowships run by BARTI, SARTHI, MAHAJYOTI and TRTI, each with its own conditions on caste category, registration and employment.
