Research institutes in Pune for a PhD

Which body will award your degree if you do a PhD at a Pune institute?

The table pairs each institute with its degree body and the score that gets you an interview.

The degree body sets your coursework and thesis rules: SPPU’s are in our SPPU thesis format guide, AcSIR adds its own review-article and project-proposal requirements, and JNU and TIFR have their own ordinances. Ask at interview which ordinance you will be registered under.

How does an SPPU-registered PhD work at ARI, IITM and NCCS?

SPPU treats these institutes as “recognised research institutions” under its Amended Ordinance 186 (Circular 157/2026). Clause 4.1 lets their scientists be recognised as supervisors if they match the publication record asked of professors, and clause 12.2 requires at least two PhD-qualified scientists before an institution may admit. Selection is done by a committee chaired by the institute’s director, with SPPU’s reservation nominee on it (clause 3.2(d)(iv)C).

The route that matters most for scholars with a JRF is clause 3.2(b). If you hold a UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, NBHM or similar fellowship, you can apply to a research centre at any time of year, the centre may interview such applicants every three months, and a seat can be created for you so the fellowship does not lapse while you wait. Without a fellowship you go through the SPPU PET cycle, which has not been held since 2024 (see our part-time PhD in Pune guide for the admission rounds since then).

Agharkar Research Institute

ARI’s PhD page says it is affiliated with SPPU for the PhD, advertises twice a year, and takes fellowship holders by “lateral entry”. Candidates without a fellowship select ARI as their workplace on the SPPU PET form. Selection depends on vacancies, the interview and whether a fellowship is available. When we checked SPPU’s vacancy search in September 2026, ARI (research centre RAAP010140) had 64 declared seats: 33 in biotechnology, 21 in botany, 8 in microbiology and 2 in geology, split by reservation category. ARI’s own table of vacancies by guide added up to more than that, so ask the guide directly before you plan around a number.

IITM, Pashan

IITM is an SPPU research centre (RAAP010380) for Atmospheric and Space Sciences. IITM advertises its PhD studentships on its studentship page. The September 2026 vacancy search showed four seats, all under one guide. IITM also appears in AcSIR’s list of associated institutes for climate modelling, monsoon dynamics and related areas, so ask which route your supervisor uses.

NCCS

The NCCS advertisement for the March 2027 session takes a postgraduate degree in any science with 60% marks and a JRF from CSIR, UGC, DBT (Category I), ICMR or BINC, or a December 2025 JGEEBILS score, for which NCCS offers a limited number of its own fellowships. Lectureship-only NET, DBT Category II, GATE, ICAR and ICMR project-category results are excluded. The upper age limit for JRF is 28 on 1 March 2027. The advertisement does not name the degree body; the 2021–22 annual report says NCCS teaches PhD coursework for scholars “registered with the S. P. Pune University”, so confirm that it still applies when you are selected.

What do NCL, NIV and Pune’s other AcSIR centres ask for?

AcSIR runs one national admission for all its centres, and Pune has several: CSIR-NCL in chemistry, materials and chemical engineering, CSIR-URDIP for patent and chemical informatics, ICMR-NIV and ICMR-NITVAR in virology and HIV/AIDS, and MoES-IITM in climate science. The January 2026 brochure lists NCL’s research areas across catalysis, polymers, fuel-cell membranes, continuous-flow synthesis, process scale-up and computational biology.

For a PhD in Science at NCL you need 55% in a master’s degree, or 75% in a four-year bachelor’s, plus one of these:

• a valid national JRF or SRF, or an equivalent award such as DBT-BET or INSPIRE;
• a post at the institute as project assistant, SRF or scientific or technical staff, with your employer’s NOC (project assistants need a year in the post, and either a national test or a filed patent or SCI paper);
• industry sponsorship, again with an NOC. AcSIR says plainly that it encourages working professionals to come this way.

AcSIR’s August 2026 notice closed applications on 14 April 2026, and the January 2026 session closed on 21 October 2025. Fees for the 2026 cohort were ₹14,000 a semester for regular students and ₹28,000 for sponsored ones.

ICMR-NIV is narrower. Its PhD page describes an AcSIR PhD in Medical Research for holders of an ICMR, CSIR-UGC or DBT JRF. The AcSIR brochure also opens Medical Research to MBBS, BDS, MD and MS graduates and to master’s holders in public health, biostatistics and several social sciences, but its staff-route clause excludes ICMR institutes, so NIV project staff cannot use it.

How do IUCAA and NCRA select astronomy and physics scholars?

The two share a graduate school but not a degree. IUCAA admits through its own National Admission Test (INAT) or through JEST and CSIR-UGC NET for JRF in physics, followed by two rounds of interviews in Pune. For INAT-2027 the published dates were 30 November 2026 for applications and 17 January 2027 for the two-hour written test. You need a master’s in physics, applied physics, mathematics, electronics or astronomy, or a BE, BTech, ME or MTech in any branch, with 55%. The 2026 round for JEST and NET-JRF holders closed on 28 May 2026.

NCRA is a TIFR centre, so its scholars graduate from TIFR. The TIFR GS-2026 eligibility table lists NCRA under physics only and accepts no other GS test subject, though it notes that some admissions on GATE, NET or JEST physics scores are possible.

Scholars from both spend their first year in the IUCAA-NCRA Graduate School: two semesters of about fifteen weeks each, with a project in the last two months. The rules are strict. More than two C grades (below 41%) disqualifies you, you need 65% overall, and IUCAA scholars must clear every core course before submitting the thesis proposal to JNU. After that, four consecutive six-monthly grades of B or lower can end in cancellation under the JNU ordinance received in May 2024.

When does IISER Pune take PhD applications, and on which score?

Once a year for the August intake, department by department, with separate windows and tests. From the August 2026 admissions page:

• Biology (to 10 April 2026) took a five-year national fellowship, JEST, GPAT, NBHM, INSPIRE-PhD, a relevant GATE score or a JGEEBILS rank. The form asks you to design a short study, and the answer may be used for shortlisting.
• Chemistry (to 31 March 2026) interviewed in person in early June.
• Mathematics (to 20 March 2026) asked for an NBHM D-score of 35, or a NET-JRF or GATE rank within 300, then set a written test on campus.
• Earth and Climate Science (to 30 April 2026) accepted NET including lectureship, GATE or JEST.
• Humanities and Social Sciences (10 to 25 March 2026) took students only with three named faculty members, on a two-page research plan and NET, GATE or NBHM. Gokhale Institute, Deccan College and the SPPU departments are compared on our Pune social sciences page.

The general floor is 60% in the master’s (55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates), and graduates of Institutes of National Importance with a CGPA of 8 or more are exempt from the national test.

How are Pune’s institute deadlines spread across the year?

Pune’s windows are spread across the year, so one cycle can cover several institutes:

• 30 November 2026: last date to apply for IUCAA’s INAT-2027, with the written test on 17 January 2027 in several cities.
• 5 December 2026: last date for NCCS’s March 2027 session. Online interviews follow on 4 to 8 January 2027, and selected scholars join by 1 March.
• October and April: AcSIR’s two admission windows for NCL, NIV and the other Pune AcSIR centres. The January 2026 session closed on 21 October 2025 and the August 2026 session on 14 April 2026.
• March and April: IISER Pune’s departmental windows for its August intake. In 2026 they ran from early March to between 20 March (mathematics) and 30 April (earth and climate science).
• Any time, with a fellowship: SPPU research centres such as ARI and IITM, under clause 3.2(b) of Ordinance 186.

Decide first which fellowship you hold or expect, because it filters the list more than your subject does. A JGEEBILS rank, for example, opens NCCS and IISER biology.
