Bharathidasan or NIT Trichy: how far apart are the two thesis formats?

Further apart than most scholars expect. It matters most if you move between the two systems, say as an NIT M.Tech. graduate now registered at a Bharathidasan college centre. Go by the rules of whoever awards your degree. Not the habits of the lab you trained in.

Three differences cause most of the rework we see.

• Chapter titles. Bharathidasan’s Annexure III asks for results chapters named after what they show, ideally one per core objective. It says the caption “Analysis & Discussion” is better avoided, because it names a procedure, not a theme. NIT Trichy’s guidelines do the opposite. There, a chapter called Results and Discussions sits just before the conclusions. So a thesis moved from one pattern to the other needs restructuring, not a renamed heading.
• Headers and printing. Bharathidasan prints both sides and starts each chapter on an odd page. The chapter number goes on even-page headers and its title on odd ones. NIT Trichy prints on one side and says running heads may not be used.
• The abstract. NIT Trichy caps it at 600 words and six keywords. Bharathidasan’s Annexure III has no abstract page in its order of pages at all. Yet the 2022 submission form asks for a one-page English abstract, and the Research Section wants a one-page Tamil one (below).

NIT Trichy’s own guidelines date from July 2008. Their copy count no longer matches the current Form 8, so check the numbers with the MS and Ph.D. section before you print.

What happens between the pre-thesis presentation and thesis submission at Bharathidasan?

At Bharathidasan the synopsis is a formal gate with its own deadlines. The thesis clock starts from it. Here is the sequence in the Ph.D. Regulations 2026:

1. Pre-thesis submission presentation in your department, before the Doctoral Committee, faculty and other scholars (clause 9.1). Their comments go into the draft thesis with your supervisor’s advice. It can happen up to three months before your minimum period ends, if registration is confirmed and the research is complete. 2. Synopsis within 15 days of that presentation (clause 9.3). It goes to the Director-Research, Ph.D. Section, with the attendees’ signatures. It runs to 7 to 10 pages: title, state of the art, problem and objectives, results and discussion, conclusion. Two copies go in with a PDF on CD and copies of your published articles. Your supervisor’s sealed panel of examiners goes with them.
3. Thesis within six months of the synopsis (clauses 9.2 and 10.1). Miss that window and you repeat the synopsis seminar and resubmit within a year. Miss that too and registration is cancelled. Undoing it costs a revocation fee of ₹40,000 plus GST.

The examiner panel shapes how carefully the thesis must be written. Your supervisor proposes six external examiners (clause 11.1). Three come from different states outside Tamil Nadu, and three from different countries abroad. The evaluating board takes one name from the Indian list and one from the foreign list. Clause 12.1 fills the third place “from Research Supervisor”. Each examiner is asked to report within 30 days. Then comes the public viva at your own research centre, before examiners from Tamil Nadu but outside Bharathidasan’s area. Anyone in the audience may put questions (clauses 13.2 to 13.5).

The regulations say more than once that the supervisor must see the synopsis and thesis are free of errors, language errors included. In practice your guide will read closely before signing. A chapter that arrives rough in month five can push you past the six-month line.

What Tamil pages does a Bharathidasan thesis need, and how early should you start them?

Clause 10.3 makes a Tamil Virtual Academy certificate compulsory in every Bharathidasan thesis. The Academy is at Kottur in Chennai. It certifies Tamil and English versions of your abstract and an index of key terms. A thesis written in Tamil needs only the Tamil version.

The Research Section’s own form for Tamil translation spells out what to prepare:

• a Tamil translation of the synopsis, 3 to 5 pages
• a Tamil abstract of one page
• a glossary of 50 to 100 terms
• all three in one file, in Word and PDF, typed in the Marutham Tamil font and named after you
• the file emailed to [email protected], and the form, signed by you and your supervisor, sent by post.

The form asks for this preferably one month before you submit the thesis. The certificate must be enclosed with the thesis. The contact named on the form sits in the university’s Department of Library and Information Science. Is Tamil not your first language? Then arrange a translator and a Tamil-speaking reader early. The glossary has to match the terms your English chapters actually use.

Two more language points. Clause 10.2 says the synopsis and thesis are in English. Tamil is allowed for some History topics, on the Departmental Research Committee’s recommendation at registration. And clause 7.2.6 lets the Doctoral Committee recommend Tamil in other non-language subjects, with the Vice-Chancellor’s approval. A Tamil thesis goes to a different panel: three examiners from Tamil Nadu outside the university’s area and three from elsewhere. Also, the university’s 2022 thesis submission form still mentions only a one-page English abstract, plus Tamil for Tamil-language students. Where the 2026 Regulations and the Research Section’s form ask for more, follow them.

NIT Trichy’s regulations and thesis guidelines don’t ask for Tamil pages, and SASTRA’s PhD page doesn’t mention them. Anna University does. Clause 17.2 of its R2025 regulations asks BIT Campus scholars for an abstract in English and another in Tamil, each running to about 400 words.

Which Trichy rules must be met before submission, and where does outside help stop?

Every university in the Trichy area puts a publication gate before the thesis. At Bharathidasan, it’s two verified first-author articles naming your supervisor, before the synopsis (clause 8.5). At NIT Trichy, it’s two indexed papers and two seminars. Our page on Trichy publication rules has the details. For the thesis itself, plan the chapters around the papers you already have.

The same documents are blunt about authorship. The Candidate’s Declaration in Bharathidasan’s Annexures IV to VII has you state two things. The thesis is your ideas in your own words, and nothing in it is fabricated or falsified. The university’s Code of Ethics goes further. Passing off another person’s work as yours counts as plagiarism even if the real author agrees. The code calls it “akin to impersonation”. SASTRA’s PhD regulations end registration for misconduct and allow a degree to be withdrawn after award. And NIT Trichy’s Shodhganga form, in its e-thesis guidelines, has you declare the thesis is your original work before it is archived.

So we don’t write chapters. You draft. We read as a demanding examiner would and mark gaps in the argument. We check that each results chapter answers its objective, and we suggest edits in tracked changes, which you accept or reject. • At BIT Campus, keep the 90 days after synopsis approval for the CFR template and the scrutiny corrections.

The Tamil synopsis, abstract and glossary are yours to write or have translated. Our job is to make sure the English abstract and key terms behind them are final. Printing and binding in your faculty’s colour are your tasks too. So is handing the copies in person to the Research Section at Bharathidasan, or submitting through your department at NIT Trichy.
