Should you apply to an Annamalai department or an affiliated college?

Decide this first, because Annamalai treats them as two admissions. The PhD admissions page says you must register separately for university departments and for affiliated colleges. And a registration can’t be moved between them. Each has its own notification, its own prospectus and its own ₹1,500 fee.

Annamalai became an affiliating university under an amendment of 2021. That is why colleges in four districts now run its PhD programmes. The affiliated-college prospectus sets a floor for them. A department needs two approved guides to be recognised. And a PG department can take full-time scholars only two years after its PG course began. The college notification lists no subjects at all. It sends you to each college’s website.

The departments’ notification lists eight faculties: Arts, Science, Marine Sciences, Indian Languages, Engineering and Technology, Education, Fine Arts and Agriculture. It warns that only limited candidates will be considered.

Who is eligible for a PhD at Annamalai University?

You need a master’s degree with 55% or a CGPA of 5.5 out of 10. In the SC, ST, non-creamy-layer OBC and differently abled categories, it is 50% and 5.0. That’s the general rule in clause 2 of the departments’ prospectus. Master’s degrees from the Open University system are not accepted. And Annamalai does not offer the PhD through distance education.

Clause 4 then names the master’s degrees each department accepts, and some are wider than you would guess:

• Business Administration accepts an MBA or a PG in management. But your research stays within the specialisation of your PG degree.
• Linguistics accepts any master’s with 55%. The catch: you must finish a master’s in Linguistics or Translation Studies, or a PG diploma, before you submit. The degree is then awarded as interdisciplinary.
• Music and Dance accept any master’s degree with ten years of established proficiency.
• Engineering and Technology needs an M.E. or M.Tech. in the relevant branch with 55%.

Agriculture is different. It follows ICAR rules, set out from page 41 of the prospectus. You need a second-class master’s or an OGPA of 7.00 out of 10. Coursework runs over two semesters, the minimum is three years, and there is no part-time option.

What is the Annamalai University PhD entrance test like, and who is exempt?

Clause 6.6 sets the same pattern for departments and colleges:

• The test: 70 multiple-choice questions at postgraduate level, one mark each, in 90 minutes.
• The interview: 30 marks.
• The bar: 50% of the combined 100, or 45% with the reserved-category relaxation.
• Exempt from the test, not the interview: M.Phil. holders from an approved university and teacher fellowship holders. So are candidates qualified in UGC-JRF, NET, SLET, SET, GATE, CSIR, ICHR, ICPR or ICSSR.

If you apply to a university department, the department runs the test. If you apply to an affiliated college, the college runs it. Admissions follow the state reservation policy. We found no separate syllabus. The prospectus says only that the test is at PG level, so your master’s core papers are what to revise.

The 2026-27 notification did not give a test date. It said the date would be put up on the website. When we checked in September 2026, the hall ticket page for 2026-27 was live, asking for an application number and date of birth. Check it, and the admissions page, every few days after 14 August.

For a NET or M.Phil. holder, the interview decides everything. Go with a short written proposal (our research proposal guide shows the parts).

How does Annamalai University allot supervisors?

Through the Departmental Research Committee (DRC). In a university department, the Head of Department chairs it as convener. The other members are the DDE coordinator if the department has one, two Professors nominated in rotation, one Associate Professor and one Assistant Professor (clause 6.7). The DRC selects candidates, allots supervisors and frames the coursework syllabus. Its minutes go to the Vice-Chancellor for approval.

You may name the supervisor you want. Clause 6.5 says the DRC gives due consideration to that option. It is not a guarantee. Here is what limits the DRC:

• Ceilings: clause 10 allows 8 scholars per Professor, 6 per Associate Professor and 4 per Assistant Professor. A seat frees up only when a scholar submits.
• Retirement: a supervisor stops registering new scholars two years before retiring (clause 9.7).
• Relatives: no supervisor may register a blood relative (clause 9.9).
• Recognition: a supervisor needs three papers after the PhD, as first or corresponding author (clause 9.2). They must be in indexed journals (SCI, SCI-E, SSCI, or Scopus quartiles one to four) or double-blind refereed ones.

In an affiliated college the DRC is smaller. It is the Head of Department, if an approved guide, with at least two other senior guides. The DRC interviews at the college. It then sends its recommendations to the Directorate of Academic Research (DARE) at Annamalainagar.

What are Annamalai’s full-time, part-time internal and part-time external categories?

Full-time scholars work on campus and sign the attendance register every day (clause 5.1.1). Project staff on a funded project of two or three years can register full-time. So can employees whose employer sponsors them and relieves them for the minimum duration. The minimum is three years, or two with an M.Phil.

Part-time internal is only for Annamalai’s own regular employees (clause 5.2). Teachers with an M.Phil., M.E., M.Tech. or M.Pharm. may register one year after joining. Other teachers wait two years, and non-teaching staff wait five. The Vice-Chancellor decides who is selected. And a PhD earned this way can’t be used to claim promotion or a change of cadre.

Part-time external (clause 5.3) is for people working elsewhere. Your supervisor must be full-time faculty at Annamalai. It is open to:

• Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors in a recognised college or university with research facilities.
• Class 1 or Grade-A officers and executives.
• Librarians and library staff, physical directors and SAI or SDAT coaches with three years of experience. They need no co-supervisor.
• Research scientists and officers in organisations with R&D facilities.

External scholars sign the department register for at least one month a year, in spells of at least five days (clause 5.3.6). Your NOC must come from the right authority. For a government college, that’s the Director of Collegiate Education. For an aided college, it’s the college Secretary. Polytechnic teachers need the Director of Technical Education. In a self-financing college it is the employer, and for guest lecturers it is the Principal. In the affiliated colleges, part-time is open only to their own teachers with two years of service, who mark 30 days of attendance a year. The general part-time rules are in our part-time PhD guide.

What does an Annamalai PhD cost, and what goes in the envelope?

Fees are charged every year until you submit. Late payment brings a fine, and unpaid fees can cancel the registration (clauses 8.2 and 8.3).

There are university hostels for PhD scholars: Pothigai Illam for men and Thamarai Illam for women. They are listed at ₹55,000 a year including mess. SC and ST scholars pay ₹24,000, and their mess charges are adjusted against their scholarship. Hostel stay is capped at five years.

What about fellowships? Besides the national ones, the prospectus lists one from the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department. It pays ₹1,00,000 a year to full-time SC, ST and SC-converted Christian scholars with family income up to ₹8 lakh. Our Tamil Nadu fellowships guide has the details.

You send the hard copy of your online application to the Registrar, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar 608 002. It can go by speed post, registered post or in person, with:

• SSLC mark sheet, and HSC or diploma mark sheet
• UG and PG mark sheets and degree certificates, and the M.Phil. ones if you have that degree
• No Objection Certificate from your employer, for part-time internal and external applicants (Annexure-1)
• Co-supervisor’s acceptance letter, if your topic needs one (Annexure-2)
• Transfer certificate and community certificate

Bring the originals to the interview.

What happens after you join an Annamalai PhD?

You get an admission card. You must pay by the date on the selection order, or you lose the seat. The first Research Advisory Committee meeting must be held within two months of the provisional registration order. Later meetings fall in the second week of July and December (clause 13).

Coursework is at least four or five courses of four credits. That includes Research Methodology (four credits) and Research and Publication Ethics (two credits). You need 50% in each exam and 80% attendance, and you get three attempts. You also and you must finish within 18 months, extendable by six (clause 14). An M.Phil. holder working in the same area may be exempted. Your registration is confirmed only after coursework. If that hasn’t happened within two years, it lapses.

Before the synopsis you need two papers, published or accepted, carrying the Annamalai affiliation. They must be in the same classes of indexed or double-blind refereed journals (clause 17.1).
