To get a PhD seat at the University of Calcutta, you need a good master’s degree, a NET-type result in the department’s subject, and an interview. The degree needs 55%, or 75% if it is a four-year research bachelor’s. The result can be UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, WB SET, GATE or GPAT. You hand a printed form to that department when the Ph.D. Administration Office calls for applications. Then you are ranked on your score (70%) and a 100-mark interview (30%). If you hold a JRF, the interview alone decides. The rules are the University of Calcutta Ph.D. Regulations, 2025, in force since 12 February 2026. The first round under them, Cycle 1 of 2026, ran from June to September 2026.

Who is eligible for a University of Calcutta PhD under the 2025 Regulations?
Regulation 3 takes a one-year or two-year master’s, or a degree declared equal to one (the rules give the M.D. as an example), or an M.Phil. Each needs 55% or the equal grade. A four-year bachelor’s degree with research counts at 75%. The Cycle 1 notice added five-year integrated master’s courses at 55%. Reserved categories, EWS included, get five marks off each of these. Final-year students may apply, but they must show the result before the interview or before they join.
A degree alone is not enough. Regulation 4.2 needs a qualifying result too, and its subject must match the department’s:
- UGC-NET or CSIR-NET: Category 1 (JRF) is judged on the interview and gets priority for seats. Categories 2 and 3 are ranked 70% on the NET mark and 30% on the interview, and the NET mark is valid for one year for admission.
- WB SET, GATE, GPAT or another national test: treated like NET Categories 2 and 3, using the score or percentage shown on the certificate.
- An award letter with no score: NET, CSIR-NET and SET holders in this position may be selected on the interview.
- Engineering and technology: an M.Tech. holder may be picked on interview if they have a granted patent. So may one with a Scopus or Web of Science paper that is in press or out. They rank behind candidates with GATE, JRF or another national fellowship.
The English department’s list of those who applied shows how this plays out. People on it were tagged JRF, AP (Category 2), PhD only (Category 3), SET, GATE and “old NET”. What if the subject match is unclear? The rules leave such cross-subject cases to the Departmental Committee, so ask them before you file. If you’re from abroad, you don’t take the tests. You are judged on a research proposal (regulation 4.8).
What happened in the departments during Cycle 1 of 2026?
Once the forms were in, each department ran its own interviews. The university’s Ph.D. admission notice page filled with department notices through July, August and September. A Registrar’s notice of 10 August 2026 set out the steps:

Two department notices show the scale. The Department of English notice of 1 September 2026 offered 10 seats. It called the unreserved list (serial numbers up to 175) in batches on 21, 22 and 23 September. SC, ST and OBC names came on 24 September. Each one had to bring a statement of purpose of no more than 1,000 words, bibliography included. They also needed an updated OBC non-creamy-layer or EWS certificate. Without it, they would be treated as unreserved. So were sub-castes not listed in West Bengal’s May 2026 gazette notification.
The Department of Genetics called 11 candidates for its 2 seats on 3 August 2026. It put out its final merit list on 19 August. One of the two supervisors was a teacher at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira at Belur Math, listed as a supervisor of the university department. That is the 2025 Regulations at work. A permanent teacher of an affiliated college with a postgraduate or four-year research course can be listed as a supervisor, if the department confirms the college’s facilities (regulation 6.2).
So read your department’s own notices, not only the central one. The dates, the seat split and the papers asked for all came from there. And the university says no one is told one by one.
Who can supervise you, and which committees watch your progress?
The Departmental Committee allots your supervisor at the interview itself, and the Vice-Chancellor approves it (regulation 6.1). Who can guide you? Only whole-time teachers who hold a PhD and meet the UGC rules on papers. They must teach at the university, or at an affiliated college that runs the subject at postgraduate or four-year research level. Scientists in research institutes that have an MoU with the university can also be supervisors. Adjunct faculty can only be co-supervisors. The limit is eight scholars for a Professor, six for an Associate Professor and four for an Assistant Professor. That count covers every place where they supervise or co-supervise. A teacher within three years of retirement is not usually given new scholars.
Two committees follow you (regulation 8):
- Departmental Ph.D. Advisory Committee (DPAC): at least five members, with one or two outside experts, on a four-year term. It sets up your student committee within a month of selection. It judges your pre-registration and pre-submission seminars, and it clears the thesis. A 2026 notice says it does what the old Research Advisory Committee did, plus the new duties in regulation 8.
- Student Research Advisory Committee (SRAC): your supervisor, any co-supervisor, one outside expert and one inside expert. It fixes your title and suggests your coursework. It also reviews your progress once a year and proposes your examiners. Two poor reports in a row lead to a proposal to cancel your registration.
Admission and registration are two separate steps. You are admitted when you join. You are registered only after the DPAC hears your synopsis of up to 1,000 words and the Vice-Chancellor approves it. This must all be done within two years of joining (regulations 10.3 and 10.5). Plan the synopsis for your second or third semester, not the last month.
What coursework and fees come with a Calcutta PhD?
Regulation 9 asks for at least 12 credits within two years of admission. They must include Research and Publication Ethics and a research methods course. The SRAC can count up to 6 credits of UGC-recognised online courses. Marks are 40% from work during the term and 60% from the end-semester exam. The pass mark in each course is 55% (50% for reserved categories). If you fail, you get one more try in the next semester. Did you do 12 credits or more, with RPE, in an M.Phil. or another course? Then you can get a full or part exemption.
Two things are fixed locally. A Registrar’s notice of 24 August 2026 says coursework will be offline only. DC, DPAC and SRAC meetings are offline too, unless you get permission for an online one. And each department writes its own syllabus. Take the Department of Education’s 2026 coursework syllabus. It has a common Part A in research methods worth 8 credits (2 of them in ethics) and a subject Part B of 4 credits. That’s 12 credits and 200 marks in all. The 2026 fee notice sets four charges. It’s ₹1,000 for admission, ₹5,000 for registration, ₹5,000 for coursework and ₹15,000 at thesis submission. You pay the admission fee to the Ph.D. Administration Office only after it has checked your offer letter, joining report and testimonials. Then it gives you the letter that says you’re in. The university’s rules do not set a stipend. Your funding comes from your JRF or a state scheme, such as those in our West Bengal fellowships guide.
Can you study part-time, and what stands between admission and the degree?
Part-time study is allowed (regulation 14). You need a no-objection certificate from your employer, shown at the interview or before admission. It must say that you may study part-time and that your duties leave enough time for research. It must also say you will be let off for coursework if needed. The form asks for the NOC and for your mode of study up front. Distance and online PhDs are ruled out.
Some colleges and institutes may run Calcutta PhDs in their subjects. These are affiliated autonomous colleges with at least two eligible supervisors, and government research institutes with an MoU. Where a college or institute can admit on its own, a university teacher sits on its selection committee (regulation 4.11). Before you submit, regulation 11 needs three years from admission, DPAC clearance at a pre-submission seminar, and published work:
- science, agriculture, engineering and technology: at least one Scopus or Web of Science paper, accepted or published, or a granted patent. A department may ask for more.
- other subjects: at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal. The department decides whether it must be Scopus-indexed.
- everyone: one oral talk at an international conference, or two at national conferences.
The thesis is usually in English. A Bengali or bilingual thesis needs the Vice-Chancellor’s permission. Similarity must not go above 10%, and you must disclose and mark any AI-generated content. Questions scholars ask
My NET is from 2024. Can I still use it at the University of Calcutta?
Regulation 4.2 says the NET mark is valid for one year for PhD admission. So an older score will not be ranked. A JRF that is still in force is a different case, since a JRF is judged on the interview. The English department’s 2026 list tagged some candidates “old NET”. Ask them how they will treat yours before you file.
Is WB SET accepted for a PhD at the University of Calcutta?
Yes. Regulation 4.2 treats SET like NET Categories 2 and 3. That means 70% on the score shown in the certificate and 30% on the interview. Your SET subject must match the department’s.
Can my supervisor be a teacher at an affiliated college?
Yes, if he or she is a permanent teacher at a college that runs the subject at postgraduate or four-year research level. The teacher must also meet the UGC publication rules and be listed by the department. In Cycle 1 of 2026, one of the two Genetics seats was under a teacher at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur Math.
When is the next University of Calcutta PhD admission round?

Do I need a published paper before I submit my Calcutta thesis?
Yes. At least one paper from the thesis must be accepted or published. For science, agriculture and engineering, it must be in a Scopus or Web of Science journal. Elsewhere, a peer-reviewed journal will do. You also need one talk at an international conference, or two at national ones.
