When is the MKU PhD entrance for 2026–27, and how do you register?

Online, on the university’s CET portal. It opened on 24 September 2026 for the 2026–27 cycle. Here are the details as published:

After submitting online, you send the printout by post. Address it to the Director of MKU’s Research and Development Cell. Write “Common Entrance Test for admission to Ph.D. Program” on the cover, as the 2026 prospectus asks. The portal’s important-dates page lists no test date yet. So watch it after 31 October.

Two rules in the prospectus are worth reading twice. First, you choose the test subject. If it doesn’t fit your PG degree, your written test “becomes invalid”, whatever you score. Second, clearing the test only makes you eligible. It doesn’t reserve a seat anywhere. Applicants from outside Tamil Nadu are treated as open category.

How often the test runs has changed over time. The 2016 regulations said once a year, preferably in July. A 2019 amendment moved it to twice a year, preferably July and February. That amendment also made the eligibility certificate valid for two years. The 2026 prospectus still says twice a year. In practice, check the portal rather than relying on either month.

Who is eligible for an MKU PhD, and in which subjects?

You need a bachelor’s and a master’s degree on the 10+2+3+2 pattern, with at least 55% in the master’s. The minimum falls to 50% for non-creamy-layer OBC, SC, ST and differently-abled applicants. It also falls to 50% for master’s degrees awarded before 19 September 1991. Grace marks aren’t counted. If you claim the relaxation, you upload the certificate. Are you in the final year of your PG course? You can still write the CET. But MKU releases the pass certificate only after you produce an attested cumulative mark statement meeting the 55% (or 50%) bar.

Your research subject should be the main branch of your master’s. A related subject is allowed if your supervisor certifies, with reasons, that the topic is interdisciplinary. You then have a supervisor in the main area and a co-supervisor in the other. At least one of them must be from the university. The degree is then awarded as Ph.D. (inter-disciplinary).

The 2026 prospectus lists 51 subjects, and several are hard to find elsewhere in Tamil Nadu. Among them are Saiva Siddhanta Philosophy, Folklore, Gandhian Thought and Peace Making, Islamic Tamil Studies and Art History. There are PhDs in Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu and French alongside Tamil, too. There is no engineering on it. International students with a foreign master’s skip the CET. The Department Research Committee interviews them online or in person. Under the 2019 amendment, one such candidate per faculty may be admitted over the normal limit. An international student with an Indian master’s sits the CET like anyone else.

What is on the MKU entrance test, and how should you prepare?

Two objective papers of 50 marks each, under clause 4.2 of the M.Phil./Ph.D. Regulations 2016. Part I tests research aptitude, comprehension, logic and general reasoning. For Indian-language subjects, the comprehension passage is in that language. Part II is your PG subject. Experts in the university’s research departments set it at PG-syllabus level.

The pass mark is 50%, or five points lower for reserved and differently-abled candidates. That comes from the amended clauses 4.2 and 4.3 posted in March 2022. The same amendment fixed the selection weight at 70% test and 30% interview. The test is also your ranking score, so aim well above the pass mark.

The pattern page carries model question papers for 2019 and 2020, for Part I and dozens of subjects. They are the closest thing to past papers MKU publishes. Who is exempt from MKU’s test, and how does the interview work?

There are two kinds of exemption, and they are easy to confuse:

• Test only. A 2026 public notice covers candidates who have cleared NET-JRF, NET for Assistant Professor, NET for Ph.D. admission, SET, SLET or GATE. They are exempt only from the CET and must attend the interview, worth 30%. They applied for the interview directly, paying ₹1,000 (₹500 for SC, ST and differently-abled candidates). They wrote to the Director, Research and Development Cell by 15 September 2026. That date has passed, so for the next round, look for a fresh notice.
• Test and interview. Holders of a JRF or SRF sanctioned by a national or state funding agency may be admitted directly. So may project fellows appointed through a notified selection. They apply to the department or college research centre and pay no CET fee.

Everyone else is interviewed at the department or research centre they apply to, after the university approves the shortlist. The panel is the Department Research Committee, which includes the guides who have vacancies, and you present your research interest to it. Bring your original certificates. The prospectus says they are verified at the interview, and an ineligible candidate’s selection is cancelled. The Selection Board then allots each selected candidate to a guide by rank, preferred area and vacancy (clause 4.5). What that means in practice is explained on our Madurai guide page.

What comes after admission: coursework, committee and duration?

You register provisionally and start coursework. MKU’s coursework circular of 25 August 2020 sets the credits. You need at least 12 if you were admitted with a PG degree, and 8 if you hold an M.Phil. Since 2020–21, that includes the 2-credit Research and Publication Ethics course. That course has its own external examination. The hall ticket for the 2025 one was posted on the research forms page. You finish within a year of provisional registration. If you don’t, the minimum period runs two more years from the day you complete it. You need 55% to continue (clause 6.9). A four-member Research Advisory Committee oversees you, according to MKU’s November 2020 circular. Your supervisor is its convener. The head of department and a colleague from the same department sit on it. So does an outside subject expert. The university chooses that expert from a panel of five your supervisor proposes. You present your progress to the committee every six months. If you don’t act on its advice, it can recommend cancellation.

The minimum period is three years and the maximum six. The maximum is eight for women and candidates with disabilities. Women may also take maternity or child-care leave once, for a maximum of 240 days. The regulations rule out extending the maximum. Even so, an August 2026 notice gave overdue scholars one last chance to submit by 31 January 2027, with penalties, and said no further extension would follow. Plan publications early. Two cautions. First, these figures date from 2016. The 2019 amendments removed a ₹3,000 quality-enhancement training fee from registration. And the August 2026 extension notice quoted research fees of ₹10,000 in arts and ₹15,000 in science for late submitters. Ask the Research Section for the current schedule before you pay.
