Which subjects did Bangalore University offer in 2026, and how many seats?

The 2026 notification invited applications in the subjects on its 36-line vacancy list, from Apparel Technology and Management to Zoology. Some are split by place. Kannada covers both the Jnana Bharathi department and the PG Centre at Vijayanagara. Management lists the university department separately from its research centres. Law, Performing Arts, Telugu and Urdu are also on the list. The vacancy statement is headed “department wise vacant seats existing currently”. It adds up like this:

Management research centres alone hold 110 of the 384 seats. Most subjects have fewer than 20. In several, the whole year’s intake is one or two. So a single strong candidate in your reservation category can close a subject for you. Scheduled Caste applicants must apply under their notified sub-category (A, B or C). A claim to a Kalyana Karnataka seat rests on the region’s Article 371(J) certificate.

A research centre is a recognised college department with at least two PhD-qualified teachers and the facilities the regulations list (clause 6). Clause 7.6 bars Bangalore University from recognising a college affiliated to another university as its research centre. So a college now under Bengaluru City University can’t host a Bangalore University scholar, whatever its old links. Who is eligible under the Bangalore University Ph.D. Regulations 2024?

You need a master’s with 55%. If you are coming straight from a four-year bachelor’s degree, you need 75% there instead. SC, ST, Category-I, OBC (non-creamy layer) and PwD candidates get 5% relaxation, as the state decides. That is clause 3 of the 2024 regulations. An M.Phil. counts only if it was earned in regular mode on or before 2009, with 55%. You research in your master’s subject or a related one. An interdisciplinary topic needs Board of Studies approval, and it brings in a co-supervisor from another department.

Part-time is meant for people in work (clause 3.5). That means teachers, scientists, librarians, civil servants, Group A and B officials and physical education staff. It also means employees of government bodies, industries and organisations. A part-timer must put in at least 120 working days in the department or research centre over the whole PhD, not counting coursework (clause 4.5). Full-time scholars who are employed need an NOC showing sanctioned study leave. Others sign an undertaking to take no job. The one exception is up to four to six hours a week of teaching in university departments (clause 3.6). If you join any other course during the PhD, that cancels the registration (clause 3.7). What is on the Bangalore University PhD entrance test?

Clauses 5.3 and 10 of the regulations, repeated in the notification, set the paper:

• Format: 100 marks as two sets of 50 multiple-choice questions, two marks each, in 120 minutes.
• Section A, research methodology (50%): the university’s 2026 notifications page links the UGC-NET Paper I syllabus, “General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude”. That is the research methodology syllabus for all subjects.
• Section B, subject (50%): the same page links a syllabus for each subject, and these are the NET syllabi. Physics, for example, is the CSIR-UGC NET Physical Sciences syllabus.
• Language: English, with outside examiners setting the papers. Regional-language PhDs, or a department’s specific request, can change that.
• Interdisciplinary applicants take the test of the department they applied to.

To reach the interview you need 50% in the test, or 45% for reserved categories. The regulations then use two formulas, and it helps to keep them apart. For shortlisting, your score is 50% of your PG marks plus 50% of your test marks. You need 55% overall (50% reserved) for provisional registration (clauses 5.3.3 and 11.1). For the final score, the test carries 70% and the 30-mark interview 30% (clause 5.3).

Who sits on the interview panel? The department chairperson or coordinator, the research supervisor and one external subject expert (clause 5.6). They look at your research aptitude and how well you know your subject. They also look at how good your proposal is, and whether it can be done. So bring a proposal you can defend. How does the non-entrance route work for JRF, NET and KSET holders?

The non-entrance stream has two groups, and they are treated very differently.

Fellowship holders, project fellows and foreign students are selected on the interview alone, 100% of the marks. The department’s Research Advisory Committee does this (clause 5.1.1). It covers UGC or CSIR JRF, DST INSPIRE, ICMR, ICSSR and other recognised fellowships, and project fellows on funded projects. This group need not wait for the annual notification. Clause 5.1.1(c) and clause 9.3.2 let them apply at any time of the year, subject to a vacancy. They send transcripts, the award letter and a draft proposal. The supervisor must consent, and the department forwards the papers. Foreign students’ seats are over and above the regular intake.

NET, KSET, SLET and GATE holders without a fellowship skip the test but are ranked. Here the two documents differ. Clause 5.2 of the regulations gives the score as 50% of the PG marks plus 50% of the NET, KSET or GATE marks. The 2026 notification repeats the clause but mentions only the PG marks. It says the PG score decides your place. If you are in this group, ask the department which formula it is using before the interview. Teachers on QIP and M.Phil. holders (regular mode, on or before 2009) are also exempt from the test (clause 11.4).

How are supervisors allotted at Bangalore University counselling?

By the department’s Research Advisory Committee, which is made up of all its research guides. It works from the consolidated merit list sent by the Registrar (Evaluation). Clause 11.6 of the regulations is strict:

• Only existing vacancies are filled, and no name can be added to the merit list.
• The roster is followed. SC, ST and Category-I seats can pass among those three groups, but never to OBC or general merit.
• Rank decides, not topic. You are allotted in merit order, whatever the supervisor’s field (clause 11.6.3). Those ranked above you are placed first. So the guide you want may be full by your turn.
• Half the seats go to each stream, non-entrance and entrance, and unused seats move across. Counselling starts with the non-entrance list (clause 11.6.4).
• Once coursework starts, vacancies freeze until the next cycle (clause 11.6.8).

The provisional registration memo runs from the date of counselling. It is issued only after you pay the fee. You collect it from the department yourself, and coursework classes begin within 15 days of the memos. Clause 7.7 limits a Professor to 8 scholars at a time, an Associate Professor to 6 and an Assistant Professor to 4. Clause 7.11 stops new allotments to faculty close to retirement. A research centre’s management also signs an undertaking that your supervisor stays in place until your thesis is in.

When does Bangalore University run its PhD cycle, and what does it cost?

The 2026 cycle, from the notification and the university’s circulars:

• 31 January 2026: notification issued by the Registrar (Evaluation).
• 2 to 28 February: online applications (Application-A); to 7 March with a ₹200 fine.
• 11 March: last date for the printed form and enclosures at the department.
• 8 June and 4 July: circulars announcing a tentative schedule, later withdrawn for technical reasons.
• 5 July: entrance test held.
• 10 July: circular saying the interview eligibility schedule would be published on 20 July, with interview and counselling dates to follow.

The pace is slow. The circular of 10 July 2026, in Kannada, is the latest we found. The university’s PhD admissions page lists the 2023-24 cycle, with a test on 16 July 2023, and then the 2026 one. So don’t assume a fixed month, or a cycle every year. The 2026 page also carries the subject syllabi: Ph.D. notifications 2026.

Fees. The newest fee notification on the PhD page is for 2023-24 (dated 31 March 2023). Take Arts, Commerce, Education and Law, for a general-merit scholar. It lists annual tuition of ₹13,710, a first-year registration fee of ₹6,445 and coursework fees. Research-centre scholars also pay a service and processing fee of ₹19,770 in the first year. Use it as a guide only. The 2026 notification adds three rules. SC, ST and Category-I candidates with parental income above ₹2.5 lakh pay the general-merit fee. So do OBC candidates above ₹1 lakh. And so does every part-time scholar.

Coursework is three four-credit papers. The first is Research Methodology and Publication Ethics. The second is a cognate or core paper, and the third is in your supervisor’s field of specialisation. Each has 30 continuous-assessment and 70 exam marks, plus a viva (clause 12). You need 50% in each paper, 55% overall and 75% attendance, and you get one supplementary attempt.
