Is there an SPPU PhD entrance test in 2026, or do you need an exemption?

For now, the exemption is what gets people in. SPPU’s PhD rules sit in the Amended Ordinance 186. The Vice-Chancellor brought it into force with immediate effect through Circular 157/2026 (reference PGS/3155, dated 23 July 2026). It describes two ways in:

• PET. The test is half research methodology, half subject (clause 3.2(c)(ii)). You need 50% to reach the interview. There’s a 5% relaxation for SC, ST, DT-A, NT-B, NT-C, NT-D, SEBC, OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS and differently-abled candidates. Selection is then 70% PET and 30% interview.
• Exemption. Clause 3.2(c)(i) frees you from PET if you hold one of a list of results. These are UGC-NET or NET-LS, CSIR-NET, SET, GATE with a score still in force, a JRF or SRF, or an ICAR, ICMR, DST, CEED or comparable national qualification. All three NET categories from the UGC’s March 2024 notice count. For exempted candidates, the interview is the whole selection. It is marked out of 100.

The last PET was notified in 2024. Since then SPPU has reopened the “2024-25 admission process” for PET-qualified candidates not yet selected and for exempted candidates. Circular 230/2025 of 30 August 2025 took online applications from 1 September 2025. The fee was ₹1,000 (₹800 for reserved categories). A February 2026 round followed:

After March, the circulars turned to fees, changes of research centre, supervisors’ undertakings and viva procedure. The admission circulars list showed no new PET when we checked on 27 September 2026. So watch it, and the PG Admission Section’s pages, for the next round.

Can a JRF or fellowship holder join SPPU outside the regular round?

Yes, and few applicants know it. Clause 3.2(b) of the ordinance sets up a separate, year-round route for PhD fellowship holders. That means UGC-NET or CSIR-NET JRF, NBHM or similar national awards. Why a separate route? Fellowship terms often need you to join within a fixed time of the result:

1. You write directly to the research centre of your choice, in any month. The university is meant to issue a circular saying so, and centres are to display it.
2. The centre may interview fellowship holders every three months, depending on applications and vacancies. It posts the vacancies and interview schedule on its website and notice board.
3. You present your research interest before a panel approved by the university. If you succeed, you are admitted provisionally. You are confirmed after the Research and Recognition Committee approves.
4. A supervisor is allocated by the reservation position of the supervisor and the centre. A vacancy can be created at the time of selection, so you do not wait for one to open.

Who is eligible for an SPPU PhD, and what documents do you need?

You need 55% in a master’s. One-year master’s degrees taken after four-year honours or research degrees are included. Or you need 75% in the four-year bachelor’s itself, or 55% in an M.Phil. Each comes with the 5% relaxation for the reserved categories listed above. The SEBC relaxation is subject to the outcome of Writ Petition 3468/2024 in the Bombay High Court. Circular 230/2025 adds two points. An M.D. or M.S. makes you eligible in the subject equivalent to medical science under the Faculty of Science and Technology. And a reservation claim counts only for candidates from Maharashtra. Others compete in the Open category.

You do not choose a research centre on the application form. That comes later, from the vacancies guides have declared. The circular asked for uploads of:

• the master’s mark statement (or bring it to the interview if not yet issued);
• caste and non-creamy-layer certificates, and an EWS certificate issued for Maharashtra, if you claim a reservation;
• a UDID or medical certificate for disability, and for orphan candidates a certificate from the Divisional Deputy Commissioner, Women and Child Development;
• your NET, SET, GATE or other exemption certificate.

The interview instructions (PGS/633) need all of these in original, with one photocopy set, at the interview. They also say reserved-category candidates must be Maharashtra domiciles. Report an hour early. Late comers get no out-of-turn chance, and no travel allowance is paid.

How does the SPPU interview work, and who decides your supervisor?

You present your research interest to a Department Research Committee at the research centre (clause 3.2(d)). At a campus department, that is the Head, two subject experts (one from outside), and a general and a reservation nominee named by the Vice-Chancellor. At a college research centre, the Principal or Director chairs. Only the chairperson’s and the two experts’ scores are averaged for your mark. What does the committee ask? Three things, under clause 3.5. Do you have the competence for the proposed research? Can the centre support it? Can it add new knowledge? Interviews must happen within 60 days of a PET result (clause 3.4). The centre sends its report within three working days. The PG Admission Section then publishes the selection list within 15 days of the interviews (clause 3.6).

Clause 4.3 is blunt about supervisors. The department or centre allots them formally. It weighs each teacher’s current load, the specialisations there and the research interest you described. And it “shall not” leave the choice to you or the supervisor. The reservation policy is applied at allotment. These are the limits:

• A ceiling of 8, 6 and 4 scholars for Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors. Scholars who have submitted and await their defence are not counted (clause 4.5).
• Five UGC-CARE papers for a supervisor, or three after the PhD for an Assistant Professor. A supervisor may attach to one other research centre only if their own institution has none (clause 4.1).
• No new scholars for faculty within three years of superannuation (clause 4.7).

A July 2026 circular (122/2026) added a protection for scholars. Guides must now give an undertaking before taking students. If they retire or resign, they will not refuse the NOC a scholar needs to move to another guide. PGS/633 also warns that a declared vacancy may go unfilled if the guide has left service.

What happens between selection and registration, and what does SPPU charge?

Selection is not yet registration. Under clause 5, you apply to the Registrar with the registration fee within four months of the supervisor’s allotment. Then you present your proposal to a Research Advisory Committee at the place of research. It has the head, your supervisor and two recognised supervisors, one from outside. If the committee suggests changes, you present again within 15 days. The date of the successful presentation becomes your date of registration. The Research and Recognition Committee then approves the topic. The PG Admission Section’s flowchart runs all of this through the Ph.D. Tracking System.

Coursework is 16 credits (clause 8.3). That’s research methodology (4), two advanced courses in your subject (8), research and publication ethics (2), at least one seminar, conference or workshop (1), and pedagogical training or an industrial visit report (1). You need 55% within two years of registration. An SPPU M.Phil. in the same subject exempts you. A different-subject M.Phil. still leaves the seminar, advanced courses and pedagogy parts (clause 8.7). Fees were last set by circulars of 2020. The BCUD fee structure still showed them in September 2026:

Fees apply every year until you submit the thesis (clause 2.4). The synopsis, thesis submission and viva carry their own fees. Circular 120/2026 of July 2026 restates that you pay the university share online from your own login, with the research centre’s permission. The minimum duration is three years. The synopsis waits until 36 months after registration, and you need at least one Scopus or UGC-CARE paper (clauses 10.8 and 10.10). How should you choose among SPPU research centres?

You pick a centre after applying, from declared vacancies. So do the homework first. The PG Admission Section’s site links a research-centre search and a guide-vacancy search. Make four checks before you commit:

• A named guide in your area with a declared vacancy, not just a department with a PhD centre.
• Coursework delivery. Under clause 8.6 the methodology course and both subject courses are the centre’s job, to be completed within two years. Ask how and when it runs them.
• Laboratory fee. Science and engineering centres may charge the ₹6,500 laboratory fee at the place of research.
• Moving later costs something. A change of research centre needs an NOC from the previous head and supervisor (clause 4.9). And Circular 121/2026 splits that year’s fee between the old and new centres by the date of transfer.
